Best Pizza in Town

Recommended Posts

I tried one of the deep dish pizza at PoR and thought is was really good.  While not cheap, I got a couple of meals out of it.  The only downside is that it takes a while to cook, but Lucky bar is next door to have a beer or two while you are waiting.

Then you've clearly never had a real one. To add, I can't speak for whether Pastrami and Rye's Chicago deep dish pizzas qualify as real ones because I haven't tried them and probably won't as based on their other pizzas I've tried I don't think I'd like it. I prefer their thin crispy crust.

I'm always willing to learn so if anyone has had a "real" deep pan pizza in town, please let us know where.

The only place in town selling Chicago style deep dish pizza is Pastrami and Rye Jomtien. Did you try it and find there was not a lot more cheese and fillings on it than a normal pizza? If so, they're not doing it right. Chicago deep dish is a very specific thing. It's not the same thing as pan pizza you might get at places like Pizza Company. Anyway, if Pastrami and Rye's version doesn't do it for you, then forget it. Nobody else in town is even trying.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if Pastrami and Rye's version is actually the real thing. They only charge 100 baht extra for that version. That doesn't seem enough to charge to do it right as the real version uses a massive amount of cheese and fillings in each slice, like a very thick pie.

Best bet -- CHICAGO.

The primary difference between deep-dish pizza and most other forms of pizza is that, as the name suggests, the crust is very deep, creating a very thick pizza that resembles a pie more than a flatbread. Although the entire pizza is very thick, in traditional Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas, the crust itself is thin to medium in thickness.

Look at the picture. Do you see how tall the crust is? Do you see how that tall crust is completely filled to the top with sauce/cheese/fillings? Can you understand to actually do that you need to use much more sauce/cheese/fillings than a standard pizza? That's not air filling that pie to the top. It's stuff. Expensive stuff like cheese and meat.

I posted this pic earlier in the thread. It's good Chicago style pizza, only compliant is could use more cheese. It had tons of sausage and mushrooms inside tho.

Worth the money to me.

OK, thanks, I missed the picture before.

That tells me why it's only 100 baht more. It's got a tall crust and some more filling but that is not authentically filled to the top like a thick pie as you get at real Chicago specialist places. It's really different than a pizza. More like a thick pie. To fill that baby to the top they'd have to charge more. There is nothing wrong with that picture except all I'm saying is that isn't authentic. So you eat more slices, more bread to fillings ratio than you would with a fully real one. No biggie.

I still would be surprised if any place in Thailand is doing a fully real Chicago style. To me, that's not  a big deal, just interesting. I don't need it, and I've never had a great one outside of Chicago anyway. It's hard to explain how good Chicago pies can be unless you've had a great one. I've had the Sicilian at Pastrami and Rye so I know what their thicker crusts taste like so I'm sure I wouldn't be thrilled with the Chicago one either. As I've said before, to my tastes their strength is the thin crispy choice.

I have to agree that it looks good but is not filled.  Here is one I shared with 3 other people in Chicago last year.  I could only eat about one and a half slices.  It was very filling.

Right. I've never seen a pizza like that anywhere in the world. But I've never been to Chicago (or anywhere else in the US for the last 30 years) and so I suppose that I've only had the "pan pizza" sort that is widely sold in the UK and Europe.

Yes, any deep dish pizza actually made properly like that would indeed have to contain more topping and would understandably cost more.

But I suspect that most such pizzas here would just have tall sides and a thick base, and very little extra topping, as shown in that other picture.

Across the board they have reduced the amount of product but hey...........

....

The pizzas were all really loaded but now not so, the deep dish is just the same as the rest, get less but pay the same if not even more

I certainly noticed a significant reduction in the amount of topping between the first one I bought there and the second one a couple of weeks later. Both were half-price and both were the thick sort (but not deep dish). After that they stayed about the same.

That was a REAL one!

Now I want it.

Not possible in Thailand, I think.

Yes 2 or at most 3 slices would more than fill up most very hungry men. Even Americans.

I had a margarita from loaf today and it was very good for the price 165b.

I want to try the pepperoni at 250 but it is quite steep for just a pepperoni pizza.

But loaf in general is very good anyhow

Yes, I think that Loaf is the best value in town that I know of.

Shame they stopped doing their buffet.

Really its virtually a non offer, 30% off isn't enough and the 2 hour slot is ridiculous especially as its virtually empty from opening to closing every day anyway

Lower prices, better dead time offers, keep the quality and make money on turnover or stay empty and rely on the very few customers who come in and are prepared to pay really TOP dollar.

See to be sticking with the latter and if they do they may as well sell some of the tables and chairs as they don't and wont ever, need them.

In the beginning was the word and the word was "In" :ThumbUp6:

So don't eat there.

They do a lot of delivery business.
The place is doing well actually.

It's mostly about the deli sandwiches anyway, and now burgers.

Not sure why some people get pleasure about trashing worthy businesses here.

No, it's not a charity but they are producing food that a lot of people do value.

I go there at last one day a week since it opened in this new location,  Never been empty yet and never had a bad meal. I do find going through the menu, I like some of the items more than others.  Have not noticed any frugality in the serving size, they appear to be the same since the first time I ventured there when they were down at their previous premeses. The onyl small item on the menu ralative to the rest is the Cuban which is esentially flattended as its cooked. Gram for gram, it's probably still the same size as a sandwich with a bun.

I like Pumpui's too, but its a different style of pizza, so is Ticino's for that matter, excellent for what they are but European designed.  Personal preference does not make one better than the other.

I thank my lucky stars PonR is there.

Too expensive? up to you.   Then someone gives 30% off and there are complaints.   Whoever doesn't like it there, shouldn't go.  I love it and the only place I can get this fix.  Here is the menu, if it is too expensive then dont go, there is a menu on line so no excuses.   There are always people in there when I show up.   Maybe props?

Is this the same as NY?  Nope, but pretty close and you save the airfare

PoR are all about portion size and profit!  And cater too the cashed up home sick expat and oil and gas workers!

If you are happy paying for an over priced breakfast, burger and sandwich, go for it!

If not your opinion still matters!..

Restaurants in general are about profit. If not, they don't last.

Are the owners of P and R sharp businessmen?

Yes, they are.

That means their place is going to last.

Good for them and good for their customers that appreciate some of their food. Including me.

As I've said, I don't think very much of their pizza, but some of their offerings are not available elsewhere in town, either at all or at their quality level. Particularly most of their deli sandwiches. Their burgers are also finding fans. But their deli stuff is their distinctive thing and they have earned the success that they have and I expect will continue to have. Do I wish their prices were lower? Sure. Those are the breaks.

Eating that kind of food too often isn't a good idea anyway.

It's hard to know unless you see their accounting books.

The restaurant business a tough one.

There are a lot of expenses you don't see in the food.
