Apparently it doesn't work for you.

It seems to me that you're the main (wannabe) wind up merchant in this thread lately.

On topic, I forget, have you eaten at Jolly Friar or not?

.

nope , my nearest encounter was having a number of meals in china garden !

It is the only one that has original fish n' chips. Maybe it is not the same good as in Melbourne but only there I found flake. If anyone knows another place that has flake, inform here in order to taste and see the difference.

I wasn't very impressed with the cod at Goose's last week, but it was costly. The problem I had with Jolly Frier was they didn't do the chips right, but that was before the change in management.

Goose does not have Flake (shark).

Flake is the original as I said fish n chips that first started in Australia mostly by Greeks that went there. That is why today most of fish n chips restaurants there, have Greek owners and the biggest fish trading factory also is Greek.

I like cod, I like more types and I also have eaten in Goose where I found it nice and tasty but I think it is little more expensive if we compare the prices of all plates. I understand that this is because of the spot on the 2nd road where it is more expensive rent etc. But for sure in Goose there is better environment to sit and eat, better decoration etc. Jolly is more simple.

I also asked Goose's owner about flake and he told me that the Shark in Thailand fishermarket is not good and that is the reason he does not buy and add it on the menu. :)

If anyone finds in any restaurant Flake fish n chips (shark) inform here. Because I like the Jolly's flake, but it is not good...tricky sentence...haha...I mean it is not good as in Melbourne. If we compare it, it is bad for my taste. But it is the only one I found, so...I like it...haha

Original F&C is English.

I'm sorry I didn't know what you meant by flake, but in UK Cod or any fish is referred to as flake if indeed it breaks down into flakes.

It isn't a specific fish AFAIK.

Also, AFAIK, nobody has claimed to replicate in Pattaya whatever the Aussies or the Greeks do with fish.

When I went to Perth, the several places claiming to serve the best F&C in Australia were offering Cod I believe - 18 quid for Cod & Chips & a pint of Fosters as I recall.

If it was a pint of Fosters you got I assume it was in a touristy place as that stuff is normally shipped off to the UK asap. :WinkGrin1:

On topic 'Flake' is definitely an Oz term and should refer to shark. Nice if you can get it but I bet the majority of Flake sold as such is not.

The owner of Goose agreed with me about which one is the original fish n chips. Maybe you are talking about "Cod n chips". Fish n chips first started as name only in Australia. I do not want to make any comparison. I just ask if there is a place in Pattaya that has Flake.

And sorry mate but Flake is only Shark when we are talking about Fish n chips.

Wikipedia Flake

You have to taste the Flake (I mean in Australia) to see the big difference of any Fish n chips.

This is the reason I started eating fish and now I eat many types of fish n chips.

Before the chips could almost be described a "wedges", but very heavy and often a bit soggy. With the new owner, the chips are much better, nearly proper f&c shop chips, but you get less for your money.

I've no idea how much Goose's owner knows about the history of F&C, but at least he spoke to you. :Think1:

Unless they were serving it on your prison ship, it is generally agreed (check Wiki) that it was a British invention (Scotland & England combined) and apparently the first London shop exclusively serving F&C opened in 1860.

Australia's F&C history seems to have started around 1920.

I've never eaten Shark, so I can't comment, but the answer to your Q appears to be no, it isn't in Pattaya, at least not in F&C shops.

Although Australia has adopted the word flake to mean Shark, the word obviously existed for a long time before 1920.

It has several meanings and uses (including by Cadbury's) but in cookery terms and regarding fish in particular, it is generally used to describe when any fish which flakes is properly cooked.

Both Cod & Haddock flake and a few F&C shops in UK use the term. Hence my misunderstanding.

BTW, in UK most F&C connoisseurs in UK would say that F&C should comprise Haddock, not the dirty bottom feeding Cod. :GoldenSmile1:

Bring in the Marines :LOL2:

My main (only actually) criticism was about the quality of the Cod last time, but I understand that if you can't find a reliable consistent source then it's not an easy problem to solve.

Sometimes the Flake seems like to be something else and not shark. I taste it more like cod than shark. Maybe there were times that I came and you did not have Flake and you just brought on the table Cod. But I cannot be sure. For sure it was not shark. Of course sometimes I ate and I think it was, but again it was not a good quality Shark meat.

I can say that I eat in Jolly because I cannot find Flake anywhere else. This is the only reason.

I hope you try to make better the Flake dish soon...:)

I tried your special of fish burger and chips 120 baht ( takeaway ),, was nice apart from the burger bun which seemed like it was put in the microwave,, I think you ought to put the fish burger itself in a fresh bun and maybe a bit more salad,,,bun was a bit tough to bite through after it being micro-waved and un bun like,, , nice fish burger though,,

Why dont you try doing battered burgers, or even burgers,,, just a suggestion,,,,, :hello09:

IMHO anyone who goes to a restaurant specialising in F&C and orders that sort of CC tosh deserves all they get.

As it's a general JF thread, however, it's fair comment I suppose.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ate at JF a few times, over the past couple of weeks, food was pretty much as before, but it was fairly quiet, which isn't a good sign. 'Medium chips' means small, but at least they're real spuds, not frozen-fries !

The staff knocked a pie off my bill one evening, they had discovered they were out-of-stock only when they went to the fridge/freezer, but forgot to add the cornish-pasty I had instead. It didn't ring alarm bells with them, to present a full-meal bill for only 110B, for a meal ! I did the honest thing, and pointed-out their mistake & paid-up, of course.

In UK, Rock Salmon should be the spiny Dogfish, but also used to be a catchall term used to describe other shark species and Huss and even Coley IME.

Rock Salmon was very much a poor man's F&C shop fish.

That's as I recall it anyway.

Coley was sometimes passed off as Cod or Dogfish/Rock salmon by unscrupulous F&C shops ( I suspect it still is :Think1: ) because the wholesale price was (is?) roughly half that of Cod (or Haddock).

In prime condition it could be OK, though best used for Fish Cakes or Fish Pie etc using sauces as it could also be tough as old boots and strong tasting as a F&C shop fish.

It is one of the flake fishes i.e. it flakes when cooked, but isn't Flake as per Aussie speak.

I believe it's still widely available and very popular as a Curried fish dish (good idea).

The Dogfish became an endangered species due to over fishing ('Vulnerable' & 'Critically Endangered') so proper Rock Salmon is not commonly available these days, in UK anyway.

I was reading this out to a service girl who didn't even work last night and she said this is Steve - sure! - you know him? - yes know him come many time want curry sauce cook 3 times we do he still not happy - he say chips cold when get home - well if you travel on a bike with chips in a carton the elements will have such an effect Steve.

These girls haven't got university degrees or yet to have mastered fluent english/slang english, if they had they certainly wouldn't work as a service girl. I have more respect for these girls then any of the 'working' girls and some of my staff could quite easily make the 'leap' - yes Thai 's lie - yes they steal - show me one that doesn't - over 60 baht though hhhhmm i think it was a mistake but i wasn't there so i'll take your word for it and apologize on behalf of them and have a word.

But DO NOT swear at my staff as i'll take that personally as we all work as a team - Aong even said you were drunk one night and walked in the kitchen - which is clearly against health and safety but seeing as you're not coming again i can't foresee us having any more problems.

Thanks for taking the time to comment i wish you well.

Kell :-)
