Goal of the day .... Get in !!!!

Unforgettable Leeds memory #867

I was at Euston Station waiting for my kids to come down on the train from Glasgow.

Luckily their train was an hour late, so I watched the game in a nearby pub.

Marching onto the concourse just after the final whistle I spot my lot and raising my scarf high shout out at the top of my voice 'we won'

The whole place erupted in cheers - probably not due to their love of us of course, but dislike of the unmentionables! but never mind.

My two sons were delighted at the commotion, though my daughter was deeply embarrassed by her Dad - not for the first or last time.

LOST A FEW QUID

Championship leaders Leeds United have reported an annual pre-tax loss of £21.4m for the year ending June 2019.

The accounts cover the 2018-19 season, during which Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

The club made an operating loss of more than £36m, although player sales brought in more than £15m.

Turnover rose from £40.7m to £48.9m compared to the previous financial year, while the club's total wage bill went up from £31.3m to £46.1m.

Leeds' previous set of accounts for 2017-18 showed an annual loss of £4.3m.

When you look at this table Leeds do not look that bad, how are some of these teams going to continue?

9th April 1975 45 years ago !!!!!! Was in the kop that night never stood still all the match it was so packed swaying around.

On this day in 1975, 50,393 supporters packed into Elland Road as Leeds United welcomed Barcelona in the European Cup semi-final first leg.

Goals from Billy Bremner and Allan Clarke secured Leeds a 2-1 victory over the Spanish side, captained by Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

Leeds then went on to draw the second leg at the Nou Camp 1-1 after Peter Lorimer’s early opener, to reach the 1975 European Cup final.

I remember seeing them play Scotland under 23's in a warm up match for the 1975 final at Hampden Park.

The previous occasion I'd seen them at Hampden Park was the game against Celtic in the 1970 European Cup semi-final.

Attendance 134,000 - still a record for a European Club game - stunned into silence by Billy Bremner's opening goal.

Leeds United are devastated to learn of the passing of club icon Norman Hunter at the age of 76.

Norman was taken to hospital last week after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and despite continuing to battle and the best efforts of NHS staff, he sadly lost his fight earlier this morning.

Born on Friday 29th October 1943 in Eighton Banks, County Durham, Hunter left school at the age of 15 to become an electrical fitter.

Playing for Birtley Juniors, he was scouted by Leeds and following a trial game was offered a place on the club’s ground staff.

Making his Leeds debut against Swansea Town at the age of 18 on Saturday 8th September 1962, he helped Don Revie’s side to a 2-0 victory and would go on to become one of the greatest centre-backs the game has ever seen.

Hunter amassed a huge 726 appearances for Leeds United over a 14 year period, the club’s most successful to date, earning the infamous nickname "Bites Yer Legs".

Helping Leeds rise from the Second Division, Hunter was at the heart of the defence as the club became champions of England twice and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup winners twice, along with successes in the 1968 League Cup, 1969 Charity Shield and 1972 FA Cup.

He won a total of 28 caps for England and was in the 1966 World Cup winning squad, whilst was also the first winner of the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1974.

Hunter left Leeds to join Bristol City in 1976, prior to a spell at Barnsley, who he later went on to manage along with Rotherham United.

Norman remained part of the furniture at Elland Road throughout the years, being a regular speaker in the suite named in his honour, and was in attendance as recently as last month’s victory over Huddersfield Town.

He leaves a huge hole in the Leeds United family, his legacy will never be forgotten and our thoughts are with Norman’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

Deeply saddened at the news about Norman Hunter.

Met him some years ago and he was a lovely, lovely man.

They say 'never meet your heroes' but he was a big exception to that rule.

Too upset to write more.

MOT old chap, they don't make them like you any more.

Elland Road stand to be renamed.

Leeds United are proud to announce the South Stand at Elland Road will be named in honour of legendary defender Norman Hunter.

Hunter sadly lost his life after a brave battle with coronavirus last Friday at the age of 76, sparking mourning across the football world and leaving a huge hole within the Leeds United family.

The move has now been made to create a fitting tribute to Hunter, who amassed a huge 726 appearances for the Whites over a 14 year period from 1962-1976, the club’s most successful era to date.

He will now become immortalised at Elland Road, along with Don Revie and John Charles who also have stands named in their honour and of course, the great Billy Bremner whose statue stands proudly outside of our famous ground.

Norman’s wife, Sue, said: “As a family we are touched by the club's decision to name the South Stand after Norman and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters of the club and the game in general for the amazing messages of sympathy we have received in recent days. Finally, once again we would also like to thank all the doctors and nurses and everyone in the NHS who supported Norman too.”

Leeds United owner, Andrea Radrizzani, added: “Naming the South Stand after Norman is the very least we could do to recognise the lifetime of hard work and dedication he gave to our football club – firstly as a hugely successful player and secondly as an ambassador for Leeds United.

“Norman was respected and loved by everyone connected to the club and as we battle through uncertain times it is unlikely that he will be able to be given the send-off he deserves and therefore we expect the South Stand to be bouncing when fans are finally allowed to return to Elland Road and pay their respects to a giant of the game.

“I would also like to say a massive thank you to our current South Stand sponsor TransUnion, they have been completely supportive and encouraging of the suggestion to rename the stand after Norman.”

Born on Friday 29th October 1943 in Eighton Banks, County Durham, Hunter left school at the age of 15 to become an electrical fitter.

Playing for Birtley Juniors, he was scouted by Leeds and following a trial game was offered a place on the club’s ground staff.

Norman remained part of the furniture at Elland Road throughout the years and was a regular speaker in the suite that is also named in his honour, he always had time for supporters and was loved by everyone he came into contact with.

We would like to thank our supporters and the media for respecting the families wishes for privacy at this difficult time and would ask that this continue as the family continue to grieve.

QUESTION, why are Leeds still so hated !!!!!

The amount of negative posts on various sites from fans from all over the leagues, just read one from Coventry City fan that Leeds should not be promoted just because he hates them.

I know it all started in the 1960's from the southern press, yes we were a strong team fighting to get of the 2nd division.

But 50 plus years on fuck me whats wrong with people. They are the best football playing side by a mile in the championship and deserve to go up on merit. Or should they be playing like Cardiff style huff it long Borrrrrrrrrring.

They are jealous - pure and simple.

We are a great Club with a proud legacy and a legion of true supporters - who really cares about Coventry City enough to hate them?

Quite.

I wear the hatred of such numpties as a badge of pride - if Leeds United are still generating such hate, we must be doing something right.

PS: The football we were playing just before the Chinese flu hit was sublime, the best they've played for nearly 20 years, IMHO.

Yes, but no usable stadium currently - or at least not one they’re willing to pay the rent to use.
