Denly gave everything for England in the other match neutralising a hostile Australian attack that paved the way for Stokes' heroics and as a reward he has been made the sacrificial lamb to serve Roy better. Its also an opportunity to nail a place in the fragile top order.

Joe Denly may have a lot more talent and brains than Jason Roy , but to open in test cricket you have to be able to play the short pitched delivery .

From what iv'e seen when Denly gets a short ball all he does is closes his eyes , flinches and trusts to luck .    Not a sound policy but i prefer him in the side to Roy .

Bloody flat wicket this and no reason England can't post a good first innings score , but will they ?

The road to safety has just begun for the home side and tomorrow is going to be a big day. They have to bat better than they did in the first innings at Leeds to make sure the urn doesn't remain with Australia.

how about  the fact we arent very good, scoreboard pressure and the aussie bowlers are good?

let's hope we put up a show but i fear the usual calypso collapso. 'specialist batsman' butler will now be batting at 8.

regardless of the result of the ashes the captain, coaches and selectors have all been pretty deficient, imo.

i wonder if  the aussies will put smith back in charge at some point?

Criminal that a spinner should be anywhere near overstepping !

Reminds me of an ashes match in Oz  a couple of tours ago when Michael Beer oversteps when dismissing Alistair Cook who was on about 40 and went on to get 200 .   Almost identical .   Ricky Ponting who didn't want Beer in the side in the first place was less than impressed !

Just checking that game Mikey and remember watching the innings from a sports bar early morning to lunchtime on Sukhumvit Rd Bangkok (might have been Bully's Bar) January 2011 final test at Sydney. I could have sworn it was double century too, but it was 189. He got his double ton earlier in the series.

Yes no excuse for a spinner to be over stepping, maybe can excuse a leggie trying to get his length right but not left arm orthodox. Need a big innings from Root but I fear the weight and responsibility of captaincy has reduced his capacity to be a consistent heavy scorer this series. Jimmy has been badly missed this series no getting away from that.

Denly was looking good in the middle order, while he nowhere seems to be comfortable as an opening batsman. It is so harsh on Denly to sacrifice his position in the middle order, just for Jason Roy to hold his place in the team.

Agree totally , but if either one was of the right standard they should grab the chance . Denly is a much better bet imo .

Jason Roy is a hopeless case and should go back to Surrey and bat 6 in the county championship , where he might score a few runs .  Otherwise just wheel him out for the white ball thrash a thon .

My fear is he might get lucky once in this series and England then give him an extended run this winter .

Cricket just about to start for the day .

Hazlewood gets Overton     26/2

Root at 2 down and Roy in at 5 where he bats for his county side can the wheels turn around for them.

If England are 2 or 3 down at stumps odds on a draw. OZ needs to have them 5 or 6 down to capitalise on their 1st innings. Don't forget when looking at the score add 2 wickets & you get a better handle of where the game can go very quickly

200/5 and off for bad light with it unlikely to improve according to the commentators.

i believe the weather is set fair for the final two days when time is being made up. it is Manchester though.

some fight from England but Aussie bowlers getting their rewards at the end.

Although Josh Hazlewood got 4 wickets i thought Pat Cummins was superb today .    Rory Burns showed a lot of bottle to some top class bowling , Joe Root again with runs even though he is a long way from his best .

Roy cleaned up by Hazlewood neck and crop to a ball that seamed back , not fair is it Jason , those nasty bowlers moving the ball around .

Nice guy Tim Paine really isn't very good behind the stumps .

Nathan Lyon bowled too short today and got milked .  England still with a lot of work to do to save this match .

lunch doubt Australia will enforce the follow on even if they get the next 2 wickets.

Ever  since  loss in india with VVS laxman turning the match

301 all out and that with a stand of 140, pretty pathetic really even allowing for aus attack being very good.

Warner with another well made 0, he must think he’s an England batsman.

The combined shit 11 from this series would have some horrific scores between them.

Trouble is, the Aussies can bat.

If the Ashes were decided by use of Reviews then England would win hands-down.

A rare failure for lasagne, he’s been fantastic since he came in.

40 all out, I’m living the dream.

Australia likely have enough already but at least some fight. I can see us putting in one of our epic collapses on the last day.

Stokes should probably be our number three.

With Smith around I will probably be on plan B soon..... the weather looks terrible, get them off umpires.

Your bowlers are going to have a field day against our turkeys tomorrow.
