Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated for 2024)

I don't recall that So's had been closed in late May,  but I was out of town for the first two  weeks of June, so it could have been closed some days then, maybe some follow-up work to the recent expansion.  It's certainly open now; I ate there last night.

It was open 29th May (day I arrived) I had a good meal, thought the staff were great but whenever I passed at different times the first 2 weeks of June it was closed. Hope it's open on my next visit, especially as the lady took the time to ask "How spicy you want your food?" which some places don't then you either end up with bland food for farang pallet or very spicy which can give me a bit of heartburn nowadays even if it is tasty.

A good egg mayo sandwich at Secrets for 99 baht. A decent snack to soak up some alcohol when drinking on WS.

Is the sign just asking for staff or is it offering the franchise??

So's Place on Soi 15 behind The Avenue mainly serves Thai food, so I have written a separate review elsewhere in this section.  However, on Saturdays So's does offer a BBQ smoked pork rib dinner U.S. style for 299 baht.  The rib dinners start at 6.30 p.m. and continue until the ribs run out. It's also possible to order the ribs without the side dishes for 199 baht.  That's probably a nod to take-away customers and to the farang diners'  Thai lady companions  who like ribs but not Western side dishes.

01.jpg

The dinner consists of a half rack of pork ribs (six ribs), two pieces of sweet corn, coleslaw and half a baked (and steamed?) potato topped with  cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives.

02.jpg

The ribs had a nice smoky flavor.  The meat wasn't falling-off-the-bone tender, but many rib enthusiasts say that if the meat literally falls off the bone, it's been overcooked.  My grandfather used to say the meat "should have a bit of fight left in it."  There's no right or wrong about it; it's just a matter of personal preference.  But if you want fork-tender ribs, you won't find them at So's.  The BBQ sauce was tangy and not too sweet, with a definite kick to it.

03.jpg

The corn was very tasty, although I would have liked a pat of butter to go with it.  The coleslaw was the standard "school cafeteria" variety.  There was nothing wrong with it, but nothing very special, either.  The half-potato was a bit mushy for my taste, as though it had been baked and then steamed to reheat it.

Bottom line:  It's not the best rib dinner in Pattaya, but those better dinners will cost you a lot more than 299 baht.  For its price, it is good value for money.  Remember, though, the ribs are only available of Saturdays.  So's otherwise serves Thai food seven days a week.

i don't know if i really see great value in such a small portion of meat... pork is cheap here as is corn so what's so great about 299 baht expect to those accustomed to taking up the arse with australian or western prices...  great reviews evil and appreciated but i think it is necessary to weigh value with cost etc...

Small portion ?  I have had the rib special at So's and I'm no lightweight.... it is a nice sized portion of meat equal to a half rack and these aren't the tiny ribs you often see for sale by street vendors.... perhaps you are more suited for the steak buffet in Central....just learn a little Russian first.

I am not ting tong...my mother had me tested.

I had the planked pork tenderloin at Harry's on Soi Diana last night. It was very tasty and filling for 195 baht.

IMG_0232.jpg

It consisted of two pieces of tender pork on a bed of mixed vegetables and brown gravy surrounded by mashed potatoes. A grilled tomato, a piece of sweet corn, two bacon-wrapped spears of asparagus and bearnaise sauce were the other accompaniments.

IMG_0235.jpg

I've seen more attractive presentations of Swedish plankstek, but there was nothing wrong with the taste.

IMG_0233.jpg

Bottom line: I wouldn't hesitant to order it again.  I'll also be back to try the version with imported Australian beef, but that is double the price limit for this thread.

In my experience US beef tends to be a little more tender. Flavour is basically the same.

Looks good Evil, thanks for posting.

I've eaten at Harry's a few times, food has always been good. I really dislike those wooden plates though, to me they're not practical especially with gravy etc, plus they never look clean, they're off putting to me.

That's a hotly debated question, with strong opinions on both sides. Basically, I agree with Not_Shameful:

When it comes to the top quality grade of U.S beef (USDA Prime) and its Australian equivalent, I don't even notice any difference in tenderness.

It's not a wooden plate but  an oak grilling plank (planksteksbräda in Swedish).  There's a circular depression in one corner for the grilled tomato.  Oak is a hard and dense wood and juices don't penetrate the board.  The grilling boards are rinsed off, then put back on The Grill or in the oven to let the flames or heat burn off any bacteria.

However, it's become a trend nowadays for some restaurants to use cheap wooden cutting boards (bread boards) as plates and that's not appropriate. But a grill plank is another matter.

Tried the pasta buffet at Laong's Bistro second road Jomtien on Wednesday night 295baht.

Excellent food great selection of dishes. Very filling as you know pasta can be but well worth the journey to get there.

Owner said hello ,staff friendly very well presented restaurant with a large choice from the menu of other meals.

Sorry no pics. Would go again.
