Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated for 2024)

This fits the price tag of the topic but for the moment it's Bangkok only (as far as I know), so sorry about that. Looks like a franchise chain so may well end up here eventually.

"Morgann" frites (that's chips to Brits, and fries to Americans) has a stand at the back of Centerpoint on Siam Square that was doing a roaring trade when I saw it the other day.

Here's a video I found:

I didnt try them as I was on my way to a supper appointment, but 900g of fresh chips for 129B including your choice of a 21 sauces seems fair to me. They had several big bags of potatoes on a trolley outside the stand when I saw it, and they looked fresh and firm and good quality. Dont know about the potato variety though, or whether they cook them twice as they should. They certainly looked nice and I will be sure to try them when I'm there again next month.

Hmm. A little more hunting reveals a Facebook page where they say that the potatoes come from the north of Thailand and are cooked three times in the the traditional European style. I always thought that twice was the standard, but three must be good too.

And here's another video that shows them cooking them once, and then a second time as they are ordered:

The sauces are apparently imported from Europe and I found mentions of brand-related events online (a presentation on Aug 11 at 7pm), so presumably it is indeed a franchise.

I can easily imagine one of these stands doing good business near Beach Road or Walking Street or Soi Buakow.

Disclaimer: I am in no way connected to this business or anyone involved with it. I just like the idea of finally getting decent chips at a sensible price in Thailand.

I use G maps because, you map, find a rest., click on it, check reviews, go to website, find menu, check pricing, all in one place. I will be using extensively when in Pattaya.

Rinapp Ristorante is a small Italian restaurant on Soi 13/1 (Soi Yamato) between 2nd Road and Beach Road. I had the pasta alla puttanesca (whore's pasta) a couple of days ago. It was good but not great at 290 baht.

IMG_0238.jpg

I had a choice of pasta (linguine, penne or spaghetti) and I picked spaghetti.  Several explanations exist as to why it's called whore's pasta. The most likely is that puttanesca is a quick and easy sauce invented by prostitutes who had only a short time to prepare meals between customers.  Another explanation claims it got its name because the sauce "has everything in it."  Garlic, capers, anchovies, chili and black olives add taste to the tomato-based sauce.

IMG_0240.jpg

The sauce was good but lacked the "big flavors" that puttanesca is supposed to have. I thought the chef had been a bit stingy with the anchovies and olives. The portion was also a bit small for 290 baht.

Bottom line:  I'll be back to try some other Italian dishes on Rinapp's extensive menu.

You are much more forgiving than I am. That portion looks minute to me, and I would not pay more than 100B for it.

Only "a bit" ?

That's fucking tiny for 290 baht ! but your going back so once bitten twice shy mustn't apply sometimes I guess.

I take your post as a warning about the place, so thanks for your review.

I had a meal in Rinapp Ristorante a few weeks ago.

The portion was very small and to top it off the chef is well stingy with the cheese/ olives / ham etc

i will not be back to get ripped again.

I haven't been to Rinapp, but it does get good reviews on Tripadvisor

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293919-d3932688-Reviews-Rinapp_Ristorante_pattaya-Pattaya_Chonburi_Province.html

Not many places get a TA Certificate of Excellence.

Personally, for this sort of pasta, I'd prefer the Pizza and Pasta buffet on Friday evenings at the Sportsman, which I think costs B249.  No quibbling about size of portion in a AYCE buffet (not that I eat the actual pasta there at all, I go for pizza, sauces and salad!).  It kicks off at 6pm and of course you want to be there shortly after that.

Lunch in condo. Multigrain bread, Virginia Ham, fresh tomato. About 65 baht.

I'm more concerned about taste than portion size.  As said, the pasta alla puttanesca was good at Rinapp even if the portion was a bit small.  I'd rather have a small portion of good spaghetti than a big plateful of bad spaghetti.

But if portion size is an important factor for you, then my post about Rinapp can serve as an alert, even a warning.  If you want authentic tasting Italian food, Rinapp can be a good choice.  If you want a big portion, there are dozens of restaurants in Pattaya where you can get it.

I'll be going back to Rinapp because it has some items on the menu that aren't often on offer in Pattaya.

Time for an update on Hachiban Ramen 8 in Tukcom.  I did a longer review here, so I won't repeat the basics.

IMG_0280.jpg

A few days ago I had the cold noodles in a lemony sauce with Japanese roast pork, egg, shrimp, cucumber and ham, garnished with pickled ginger and a dab of mayonnaise.

IMG_0279.jpg

It was good at 98 baht.  The lemon sauce was particularly tasty.  Water cost 18 baht for a bottle, so the total bill was 116 baht.

IMG_0287.jpg

Yesterday I was back at Tukcom and tried a set meal at 155 baht for pork noodle soup, six pieces of gyoza and a glass of Coke.

IMG_0303.jpg

Again, it was good and quite filling.

IMG_0307.jpg

It's not the most exciting Japanese food I've had in Pattaya, but it goes down easily and is fine for a quick meal in a sit-down restaurant with A/C.

IMG_0304.jpg

IMG_0306.jpg

Bottom line:  I don't think I would make a special trip to eat at Ramen 8, but when I'm in Tukcom the next time and feel hungry, I won't hesitate to try it again

Another ‘eat like an expat’ one. Lunch in condo today. Not big on presentation, but very tasty.

Bread roll, salad bar, German ham all from Tops. About 100 baht - though I only needed half the roll so more like 80 baht.

Freshly made gnocchi (potato-filled dumplings) with ground beef sauce at Pizza Italy off Soi Bukhao for 220 baht.  This is a hearty dish perhaps better suited for snowy winter evenings than the tropical heat of Thailand, so fresh gnocchi is hard to find  in Pattaya.

Pizza Italy can also be find hard to find, or at least explain where it is. However, the map is NOT to scale.  Pizza Italy is close to Soi 15  and much closer to Soi Diana than Pattaya Tai.

Consistently good Italian food by an Italian chef at reasonable prices.

Pizza Italy has a pretty enthusiastic crew.  From its Facebook page:

MC burger on Soi Bukhao is a recent entry in Pattaya's crowded field of hamburger restaurants.  It's located roughly halfway between Pattaya Tai and LK Metro,  about 50 meters south of, and on the same side of the road,  as the ill-named Action Street.

MC Burger is apparently moving at the start of august into Endless bar on buakaow which is opposite tree town

Had bruschetta and arrabiatta there a few nights ago, would defiantly repeat. Place was empty, was about 8 at night, TV was too loud, would have been more pleasant if had music.

For a late night snack or even a light meal, Yakuza Burger on Soi Marine (aka Soi Lucky Star)  just off Walking Street has been a safe bet for a long time. It's open until 6.00 a.m. every day. While most noted for its burgers (beef, chicken and fish), it also serves up hot dogs, toasties, panini, fried shrimp, chicken nuggets and spaghetti.

IMG_0003.jpg.581e7124d8170f2ba013a12a3700b364.jpg

Everything is cooked to order in front of the customer.  The Grill, food preparation area and counter were very clean, which isn't always the case at hamburger stalls. You sit on a stool at the counter, but it was more comfortable than the butt-assaulting stools at similar burger stands.

IMG_0007.jpg.e78e8249d322589d2079cafc14790f6e.jpg

This morning at 3.15 a.m. I had the 99-baht cheeseburger.  It consisted of a thick beef patty, a slice of processed cheese, fried onion, tomato and lettuce on a toasted sesame bun.  The ingredients were fresh and it tasted fine.  It's not a large burger, but it was enough for me at that hour.

IMG_0005.jpg.7459d0d92355bb16bbee93eacfb7f0a9.jpg

The friendly cook asked me to take her picture.

Bottom line:  This is one of my go-to places for a quick hamburger or hot dog after a night on WS.  There was a steady stream past Yakuza Burger of girls who' work in bars that close at 3.00 a.m.  Some of them smiled at me very invitingly.

I would like to recommend Sizzler at Central Festival, 5th floor. I think their unlimited eating salad bar is good value for the current promotion price of 139baht. Healthy choice, be good to your self.

:D   A bite of the beef may have been part of it, but the services they looked like they offered would have cost  15-20 hamburgers.

I feel in the mood for lamb shank tonight.  This appears to be a good option at 249 baht.  From the FB of Retox on Soi Lengkee.
