Ok guys.  As I stated earlier I said I was going to do a burger review.  Just been back home for a couple of days.

Here it goes.

First burger was consumed at the BKK airport.  It was from Burger King (know as Hungry Jacks in Australia).  My expectations weren't high.  I've had it before.  I would give it a 5 out of 10.  A bland tasteless patty covered in mustard and ketchup.  All surrounded by a sugary bun.

attachicon.gifBurger King bkk airport.jpg

Next it was a burger out at Siem Reap in Cambodia.  I was staying at the Viva hotel and they had a mexican style restaurant.  I ordered their Mexi-burger.  It wasn't to bad.  Could have done with more chilli for my taste.  It came with a salsa dip.  6/10

attachicon.gifViva Mexican Burger Siem Reap.jpg

Then I tried Oz Burger.  It is located up the soi Buakhoa end of soi Diana on the south side.  You can't miss it.  The first burger I bought here was the standard plain burger for 120 baht.  They claim the meat and cheese is from Australia.  This was the best burger patty of the trip.  I'm not sure if the meat is really from Australia but it was certainly better quality than the other places.  8.5/10

attachicon.gifOz Burger Plain.jpg

Next up was Carl's Jr.  This an American burger franchise that we don't have in Australia so I was interested in giving it a try.  I ordered the Big Carl with medium fries and coke.  You can get as many drink refills as you want.  It cost 269 baht.  The burger wasn't bad but it wasn't great either.  I would rate it higher than McDonalds or Burger King but not by much.  If you enjoy a higher quality fast food American style burger it might be your thing.  The burger just seemed to wet to me.  I know I could have ordered less sauce and mayo but I wanted to try the burger as is.  6.5/10

Next is the famous Gary Burger you can buy from SuperBurger.  If you head down soi Honey towards soi Buakhoa you will see.  It is just opposite soi Honey in soi Buakhoa and opens late.  The Gary Burger isn't on the menu.  You have to ask for it by name.  For value the Gary Burger wins hands down.  It has double bacon, eggcheese, onion, (raw and cooked), tomato, (raw and cooked), lettuce, along with the beef patty and your choice of a sauce combinations.  I got mustard and chilli sauce on mine.  If the Gary Burger had the patty from Oz burger on it, it would win in the burger stakes (pun intended).  For those who like a good value burger this place comes highly recommended.  8/10

Two Gary Burgers.  Worth the visit.

We made a return trip to the Oz Burger.

attachicon.gifOz Burger with bacon and egg.jpg

Oz Burger with bacon and egg.  150 baht I think.

attachicon.gifOz Burger with chilli concarne.jpg

Oz Burger with Chilli concarne.  140 baht.

Best of all is my own home made burgers.  I just made them today as some comfort food to help me get over post pattaya depression.

attachicon.gifPrecision Burger 1.jpg

attachicon.gifPrecison Burger 2.jpg

I call them Aussie Kent's Precision Burgers.  Over here it works out to be around 120 baht for me to make.

It has home made burger patty with onion, carrot, lettuce, green chillies, and extra hot chilli sauce placed on a sesame seed bun .  9/10

Many thanks for your diligent research, Mognam.

I'm not sure that there is anywhere else worth trying.

The telling point was that the one you made yourself was best.

That's why we need a "build your own burger" joint in Patts.

So here are some further thoughts on burgers.

This time it is the important matter of burger height.

In the Blumenthal clip he came up with some research on the topic.

It concluded that the ideal burger height was just 2 fingers high!

Try it in your own mouth - it seems about right.

Trouble is, it is quite difficult to keep a burger that thin.

Squashing it down to achieve that thinness can start to degrade the burger quality.

Surely it rules out those double and triple burgers. They might look good in the photos.

There is no way anyone can get those in their mouths without some of it going up their nose!

Blumenthal made a pilgrimage to Newhaven Connecticut.

This is the home of the original burger joint.

Interestingly, they use ordinary white sliced bread, toasted.

It certainly keeps the burger thin enough.

They also refuse to apply any ketchup.

The message is even written on their T-shirts.

Amen to that.

Coming next - my analysis of cheese :)

You can bet those gorgeous skinny girls don't really eat sodding great burgers!

I don't know who sells the best burger in town.

Eating one of these things the other day, something occurred to me.

The problem with all these burgers is the bloody awful bread bun.

Soggy, sweet, zero fibre, zero taste white bread.

All with the mandatory decoration of sesame seeds on top.

What they should be using is toasted brown / wholemeal / multi-seed buns.

It would improve the experience no end.

You should also get choice of condiment - not everything drenched in ketchup.

My own choice would be mustard. **

Anyone know where I can get a burger to my specification??

** Strong English type, not the yellow mayo that the Americans use.

I fear there is even less chance of you finding your beetroot burger

than for me to find one made with decent bread.

Still, I sympathise with your quest for zinc.

Here are some alternative sources:

beef (yes, zinc is already in your burger)

oysters & crab

spinach

cashew nuts

chocolate (mmmmmmm....)

mung beans

mushrooms

zinc - carbon batteries

Why is there nowhere that makes burgers to order?

Is that an impossible dream?

Subway does it for sandwiches.

Maybe I've stumbled on a business idea for someone......

Also my kitchen in UK - I made one yesterday.

Standard supermarket "granery" bun and frozen beef patty.

The bun was toasted per my spec.

Dressing (horseradish) was applied under the beef,

so as not to make the salad on top soggy.

Salad just treated with salt and black pepper.

Result - burger perfection :)

That was the first ever burger in bun I've made. It's really not difficult.

Why can't McDonald, Burger King etc make a decent product??

OK - thanks for info.

I'm guessing you probably don't get choice of breads.

But controlling the burger contents and dressings is a step forward.

All doubtless while being propositioned by a ladyboy.

As already said - only in LOS!

Yes - you're right PB.

Both these major international companies do a huge amount of research.

Every aspect of their burgers receives a lot of thought.

The product that makes it across the counter is the one that most customers want.

I'm just not one of them unfortunately.

So why doesn't somewhere make more adult, upmarket burgers?

Because those people look down on burgers anyway.

It's one of those unsolvable conundrums.......

I am concerned that the quest for the best burger in town has gone cold.

Part of the problem may be that the OP did not define what he meant by "best burger".

Did he mean the biggest, the tastiest, the cheapest, the best value??

Is "best burger" just an oxymoron? (I think that's the word).

Burgers are junk food, let's face it.

If you improve it too much, it becomes something else.

Maybe "boeuf haché au pain avec  salade".

The question calls for more thought.

I make this post simply to re-ignite the debate.

Further thoughts on the great burger debate....

I had one burger on my last trip to Patts.

It was a Burger King product - the smallest they make, no cheese.

As it emerged from the wrapping it looked fine, just like the photos.

The problems started when I bit into it.

There was a distressing squelching sound, and ketchup oozed out in all directions.

After a couple more bites, the salad and bread became completely soaked.

It was a soggy mess, which I could not bring myself to finish.

Is this the experience that Burger King was aiming for??

Anyone who has ever made a sandwich knows to avoid excess moisture.

It will always reduce the structural integrity of the snack.

The general consensus here seems to be that Carl's Junior is best.

I have not tried it - that's a treat for next time.

But do their burgers hold together until the end, without excess sogginess?

I don't want to repeat my Burger King experience.

Eh, what's that nixon?? Suck down another Singha mate.

Many thanks to jiz for posting the Blumenthal clip.

I haven't watched it yet, but assume it involves the use of liquid nitrogen!

It's the full 30 min episode, so I'll settle down to watch the whole thing later.

This is the guy who takes 4 hours to cook the perfect chip / french fry.

His burger no doubt tastes excellent, and probably cost £100 in ingredients and labour.

My point is that good burgers can be made with cheap ingredients.

It just takes a little care and thought. Re. my earlier post:

".......... I made one yesterday.

Standard supermarket "granary" bun and frozen beef patty.

The bun was toasted per my spec.

Dressing (horseradish) was applied under the beef,

so as not to make the salad on top soggy.

Salad just treated with salt and black pepper."

The result was a tasty, non-soggy burger.

By chance, I repeated the experiment last night.

The ingredients were not just supermarket, but discounter supermarket (Aldi).

The result was even better than previously.

The multi-seed brown bread bun was lightly toasted.

Strong English mustard was applied under the beef.

Anyone who has eaten proper English mustard knows it always makes its presence felt!

Worked even better than the horseradish.....delicious.

I still think that there is a business opportunity in Patts for someone to make better burgers.

Maybe Carl's Junior is that place? I doubt it, but will give it a try.

It's the beef part of the burger.

I used the word "patty" because "burger" is used both for the meat part

and the whole meat + bread bun + salad item.

You can carry on reading now......

That has certainly been my experience, petemo.

Trouble is, most of us stay in hotels when in Patts.

Hence no facilities to make our own.

That's why we need a "build a burger to order" joint.

Just like Subway does for sandwiches.

You seem to be a big fan of my posts, nixon.

Yes, I've been to Patts about a dozen times.

I generally go once or twice a year.

On my last trip, I ate one burger, which was a big disappointment.

It is reported in detail in one of your many quotes above.

No picture - I don't usually take my camera to the restaurant - dunno why.

Also, I very rarely eat burgers.

So a photo montage of my Patts burger eating would not be very extensive.

I hope you accept this as the grovelling apology which it isn't.........

Anyone?

It is on the right hand side a little bit after the Dia Cut factory on your left. Set back from the road at the end of a row of shops with parking lot out the front.

Anyway, don't get too excited with the directions I will save you a trip and let you know it is shit!

Waste of great steak IMO. Kinda like lobster meatballs - tasty yes, but 1/2 as good as what you just ground up.

Just Burgers are nice. The guy who owns it is a yank who makes his own pattys and brings the ingredients from the states. Very good burgers.

Walkabout creek pub ( corner 3rd road and pattaya tai) are getting a good reputation for their burgers,so I thought I'd check them out last week, this burger is pretty darn good! Definitely done aussie style, nice flavored patty, thick juicy and a nice bit of herbs, salt and pepper. Cheese melted on the patty, bacon egg onion lettuce and beetroot. Bun lightly toasted, served with a generous serving of shoestring fries. 220baht and 65 baht for SML. Good quality and value. The owner, Danny is from Hervey Bay and a nice bloke with a mean mullet and moustache combo. We got Dinner and a show the day i Went, BiB sat just around the corner. Watched quite a few motorbikes do a runner from him 555

she asked "do you lub me?" i replied "i lub fucking you!"

Toasted bun, flame grill, american cheese, etc. The staff is excellent.

Bacon Cheese Burger w/ Coke 189Bt.  Nice view of the beach.

Once in a while I will splurge & go to the Marriott and get the best burger in town, at twice the price.

Must be fun dealing with 200 people/day who want to know why they can't have free beer. Can't imagine it's worth the aggrevation.
