Thanks Harry. I feel I should point out to anyone reading this thread to be very very careful about using Thai slang & Thai dirty talk or they can end up in some nasty trouble real fast. Walk into a Soi 6 bar and start making jokes about smelly cunts and you may well get bottled.

I would advise anyone learning Thai to learn the dirty words (it's good to know them because you then know if Thais are using them about you) but don't go using them until you have a very solid grasp of the Thai language and a very solid understanding of the impact of the word.

Vowel length is another one that can catch us out e.g.:- hi ma is snow hii maa a dog's vagina

But...what do I know?

I say this with trepidation but I spent a bit in a bar where a bargirl I bedded started calling me Mr Joo Lek and it caught on. All the ladies started calling me it. Later I found out Joo Lek means = small dick. OUCH that stung.

Thanks Pubstud for the meaning of John (poor). When the girls say 'wot your name' I say 'John' because they can never pronounce my name. :)

eeya - bitch (very insulting use with caution)

jepp hahm - sore cock.

No idea what apree is. But mung alai is aggressive challenging talk. Like if someone is staring at you and you say mung alai to them. Like in English we'd say - you got a problem asshole?

I've always been a bit confused about the word "hahm" or "hum" I always thought it meant the scrotum but I hear Thais use the word to include the penis as well. Last trip down to Perth I bought a little money purse made from a kangaroo scrotum and gave it to my missis, when I told her what is was she said - hum jinjoe - kangaroo ballbag. So I'm still unclear on the exact meaning of hum/hahm.

I've used "mung alai" without getting into trouble. Doesn't seem to be have the same effect as "you got a problem asshole". Usually I say it to a girl during the course of flirting. It typically gets a chuckle.

Guess it's a case of how you say it and to whom. Said jokingly to a gal won't get one into trouble, but said in a confronting way to a Thai man is definitely challenging. Mung is a strange word, can be almost a term of endearment between friends and very insulting to someone else. You'll notice with Thais when they get angry they always go into Goo & Mung talk.

หนู nuu

literally 'mouse' but I've also heard people use it when addressing a younger woman, instead of คุณ khun.

Do think this could cause offense as the thai-langauge.com entry below suggests?

"[fairly impolite 2nd person pronoun used to call over a waitress in a restaurant and a girl or woman working in a nightclub, café or escort business] you"

When I learnt to speak/read the book I used had written exercises and one of them was ordering food. Standard stuff but they introduced the concept of calling younger wait staff 'nuu' such as 'nuu, nuu get sadtang, krup' (mouse, bill, please) but never any indication of it being impolite.

Not sure in the bar girl business if it'd be considered impolite though. I'd never used it myself. I'll ask a Thai friend what they think.

Boys, girls would you have had the joy to you as the study of their language and how you are active and diligent. Way to go, whether we shift the level of communication in Patts to proper level. :GrinNod1:
