Yeah you maybe correct, it seems to be worded a little unclearly and I may have jumped the gun, it states "All top up packages get throttling 384Kbps". I was possibly a little quick with the scam suggestion as if that is the case it is decent value.

The suggest Top Up packages for Tourist SIMs are to be avoided.

http://www.ais.co.th/travellersim/

You can see examples at the bottom of that page. Poor value as compared to what is generally available and then throttled to 64kbps when high speed data depleted. Normal top up packages are usually at least to 128kbps. So if the 384 kbps applies to normal packages, then perhaps useful to some.

Looks like the Changed the packages. No 30 days Tourist sim anymore.

https://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/tourist-sim.html

As I wrote before, there was no 849 baht 30 day Tourist SIM in the first place. It was just a matter of them picking up a SIM, applying the prerequisite add-on and selling  it to the recipient as a Tourist SIM.

It seems there are some who just didn't get that there was never an 849 baht Tourist SIM on that page. I can't make it any clearer than that....

The Tourist SIM under that link are exactly the same in amount and prices as was there last December.

The difference from December to now being that the 299 baht SIM allowance went up from 1.5 GB over 7 days to 2.5GB over 8 days and the 599 baht SIM from 4 GB to 6GB over 15 days.

Tourist SIMs are perhaps for one time visitors such a Chinese tourists. No excuse for well informed forum members to waste money on nonsense.

nothing wrong with tourist sims given out free off incoming flights especially now the maximum 90 day validity has been discontinued by using the short code and can extend up to 1 year

The free or 49 baht Tourist SIMs are absolutely fine. It's the majority of the bundled packages that tend to represent relatively poor value.

A normal prepaid SIM (e.g. from 7/11) and then add whatever data plan that suits.

Or, if you can't be arsed screwing around and don't give a shit that a certain BM will call you stupid ... just grab a tourist SIM :D

Just get the true sim....You can extend validity up to a year with a short code which from memory is 2 baht for additional 30 days

Call uk landlines at 1 baht a minute plus vat...not sure re ringing mobiles everyone uses line or messenger these days anyway

Data and because I have no need for "high speed"  I use a short code which gives an "always on connection" for a month with first 1gb at 4g and thats 212 for a month. Greyman did say there was a better one again but am not concerned over £4.50 for a months service. After 1gb speed is throttled but for whatever reason 9/10 it still plays youtube without buffering. Not sure whats going there but not complaining

data package is *900*1801# then press call  its either 212 or 214 baht a month.....leave less than those figures at months end as it will renew automatically if balance is available

Code for extending validity is *934*30# then call

There are loads of others but that one suits me. I rarely go thro more than 100 baht a month on actual calls

It seems you still aren't getting it.

No need to go to a 7/11 if flying in. You can get a SIM from exactly the same place where you get the Tourist SIM bundles. The difference is that you don't buy a bundle, just the SIM for 49 baht and credit whilst at the booth. They 'll activate the SIM and apply the credit. No need for you to strain your brain.

Then you just tap in the code for the package that suits you or if you've written it out before leaving your country, hand it to the girl and let her tap it in for you.

This way , you get the package that fits your needs. Not just wasting money on something you might not even use.

Some people need high speed, some people need unlimited. Just tap in the code for the one that you want.

It really doesn't take much. If taking a few minutes to peruse the website to find the package that suits you is too much, it's time for you to make time for yourself. Perhaps a meditation course. Your life is too stressful.

I find the time for everything. Even writing this message for you.

Actually the 4G package gives you 1.5 GB, which is then throttled to 128kbps; Dial*900*8816#tel_icon.png

It's the 3G package that gives you 1 GB, subsequently throttled to 128kbps; *900*1801#tel_icon.png

Both at 212.93 baht per month.

You might think that the 4G package, on the face of it, is better value than the 3G package. But the 3G package also gives you unlimited free use of the TrueMove HotSpots.

In addition, the 3G package(up to 42 Mbps) gives you access to certain add-ons, which make their more expensive package somewhat superfluous.

For instance their next 3G package up costs 299 baht plus VAT for just 1.5 GB. But you can simply apply a 2 GB speed topping to the 1GB 3G plan for 99 baht. So 3GB for less than the price of 1.5 GB.

They even have a 10GB speed topping for 299 baht.

http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/topping/3g_speed_topping_package_en.html

So 536.82 incl. per month for 11GB and unlimited Hotspot usage. Not the best value you can find, but an example of how you can tailor a package to your specific needs.

lol if it says 4g on my phone I'm not arguing......you also totally missed my point about not requiring "high speed".....dont need 10gb at 299 baht either.......in addition if its throttled to 128kbps it clearly wouldnt be playing youtube videos 9/10 again I made that point in my post......anything else you want to pick holes in Mr Big.....you'd be a decent poster if you didn't come across as a total areshole time after time on phones and flights

No, you missed my point. There was no argument, I was informing you of the benefits of your particular package.

I wasn't suggesting that you needed more data. I was just giving you more information about your package. That you have unlimited free TrueMove Hotspot usage(if you didn't already know). To acquire WiFi password dial *871*4#

It will show 4G on your phone, but it's the up to 42 Mbps package that allows you apply speed topping.

Remember that you are not the only person reading the thread, so I used your package as an example of how someone could customise a package instead buying a Tourist SIM.

Instead of seeing it for what it is, in your paranoid mind, it is someone having a pop at you...when in fact I've simply tried to help you and to inform others. But there are always idiots who get offended because they like to think they know it all. Like yourself in the banking thread. You made a statement, but couldn't back it up. Now you are sore about it.

Get over it.

We are here to help each other and share knowledge. So instead of being an ungrateful arse, just say thanks, I didn't know that I have free unlimited Hotspot usage. Because on the 4G package, you do not.

I'll provide the links to back up my statements.

4G up to 100 Mbps package *900*8816#tel_icon.png here; http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/topping/4g_topping_en.html

You'll note no mention of free WiFi

The package you use *900*1801#tel_icon.png here http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/topping/3g_internet_package_en.html

You'll note the column with WiFi Non Stop. So that gives you the opportunity to save your faster mobile data if need be.

Remember that you are not the only one reading this thread. So the information is for you and for anyone else who finds it useful.

Don't be an arsehole, eh?

I am following this thread as I am coming to Thailand for a month in a couple of weeks time.

I appreciate every contribution from everyone.

I am not a phone tech person and a stupid question perhaps.

I buy the sim card in the airport say put 300 or 400 baht on the card and then give a code for a wifi program i select. say that the cost is 250 does the balance of the money get used for calls or do I need a code for a calling program

Thanks guys

The remaining credit can be used for calls, SMS/MMS or a further package.

I guess you mean  mobile broadband, as opposed to WiFi. WiFi in these cases is generally meant to describe the use of HotSpots to obtain Internet access.

Remember that you usually need to add 7% VAT to quoted package prices.

Last year i bought a 100 baht top up for my sim(which I hadn't used in 9 months) and it didn't work. The next day whilst walking around central(in Udon) I found a Truemove store and they could reactivate my sim with a new package put on to it and I keep the same number(which is linked to thai bank account).

Anyone know if I'll be able to do the same at the airport when I arrive? (Suvarnabhumi)

If you are lucky. Depend on how long since suspended and whether they can be bothered with spending time getting it sorted out for you. Often quicker to just set up a new card.

In future, make sure that you have extended the validity to twelve months by the time you leave.

Yeah just don't wan't to go to the bank to get the number changed. Not sure how I make the validity last for 12 months but will ask in the store. Thanks for the reply

I have only used DTAC(happy sim) in Thailand so cant answer for true move which is your company. Just before leaving I have phoned the call centre(English speaking) and told them I would like 9 months extended validity on my phone number. This has cost something like 20-30 baht and is taken from my credit.

I'm a pure Data guy and I remember that at least last year some AIS packages was more affordable than dtac, altough it was narrow. Not sure if that has changed..

Also cred to the the previous user saying that you should avoid the "tourist sim packages". Thats some good advice. They are really expensive compared to the "standard plans".

But...it is (was?) a big hassle to locate the top up #numbers from AIS webpage last year. A real Maze.

1)

I usually buy a sim at the airport AIS desk and say "top up 400 only". This creates a traditional Thai confused state with responses such as "can not" / "only have tourist sim" etc. But keep on trying and they will do it.

2)

Then I call the #number of whichever packaged I had previously researched about.

3)

Done!

https://m.ais.co.th/ontop-package is a good link to have bookmarked, as there is a decent array of packages there to get you started. No need to enter short codes, just click on the grid and again to confirm.
