Depends on validity date when you left.

If it works for Roaming, test it(with Data Roaming switched off). If it works and you can receive SMS,  check current validity by entering the mobile number here; https://eservice.ais.co.th/eServiceWeb/

You can also top up to add validity here; https://mobiletopup.com or here; https://www.facebook.com/thaiprepaidcard/

Haven't tried them myself.

I think that a fair few members do video streaming these days, therefore data limits such as those imposed by the tourist packages can be limiting.

With a little bit of planning beforehand, you can be ready to tap in the shortcode needed once you've obtained a basic 49 baht SIM at the airport, together with the top up credit that you need for your chosen package.

These days all the networks have capped speed packages that offer truly unlimited data. Not the situation where you used up an allocated amount of data which then slows down to a crawl for the rest of the week/month.

So these capped speed plans are a much better solution for most.

For people streaming on their phones and SD material at home via TV and PC, the unlimited 4 Mbps  packages would be a good choice. All networks have one day, seven day and thirty day options.

Unlimited 6 Mbps available from True and AIS

Unlimited 10 Mbps available from DTAC

Unlimited Max speed is also available from AIS and True, but don't bother with this if your device cannot transceive on Thailands 4G network. As you'll be paying 1605 baht per month for Max Speed, but only receive 4 Mbps.

For those with less demanding needs, all networks have a unlimited 1 Mbps package.

In addition DTAC are currently running a Double Speed promotion. Subscribe by the 23rd of December and receive 2 Mbps on the 1 Mbps package, 8 Mbps on the 4 Mbps and 20 Mbps on their 10 Mbps. For up to sixty days after you join.

So a lot more out there than just the 'one size fits all' Tourist bundles.

How do I go about obtaining this? Forgive me, but I've yet to have been in BKK international airport. Do I wander around until I find a sim kiosk, buy a 49 baht sim card there, and then have them set me up with a 7-day plan? I am looking to do video calls/conferenced and use my phone for streaming of various sorts, besides being online for a plethora of reasons. What is the cost of such a, for example, 10 mbps 7-day plan?

Thank you!

I cannot view the video right now; does this also cover how to get setup with a capped speed+unlimited data plan like what @JamJar recommends?

No the video shows you inside Bangkok Airport and where you have to go to, to get your sim card sorted. The phone companies desks/booths are on the same floor and all together with the different date plans prices etc.

The video will show you the location of the networks' booths.

You will need to head towards the DTAC booth and purchase their basic 49 baht SIM, together with at least 250 baht worth of top-up credit.

Refuse any offer of the 299 or 599 baht Tourist SIM. Just the 49 baht SIM thank you and anything from 250 baht to 300 baht worth of credit.

They will set up the SIM in your phone if need be and apply the credit.

Then for the 10 Mbps(uprated to 20 Mbps if you arrived and activate by the 23rd of December) Press *104*398*9#send or hand them that exact code and ask them to apply it for you.

This will deduct 213 baht from your credit balance and apply the package to your SIM.

You can tether or place it in a MiFi device.

https://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/net-no-limit-double.html

If you intend to use the SIM for a future trip, you'll need to extend the date after which the SIM will expire;

Extend your validity for up to 365 days at a cost of 2 Baht per month

  • Press : *113*30*9#send for 30 days extension.  Cost 2 Baht
  • Press : *113*60*9#send for 60 days extension.  Cost 4 Baht
  • Press : *113*90*9#send for 90 days extension.  Cost 6 Baht
  • Press : *113*180*9#send for 180 days extension.   Cost 12 Baht

Hi ive been on the DTAC website. So my understanding from this thread is i go to the kiosk at the airport and but the regular 49 bth sim. Add some bath to the account, say 300- 500 bth.

Then i goto their website and select a plan that fits my needs. And enter in the code for that plan. It will be deducted from what i prepaid. Because yes this looks like its better then the tourists plans they have.

However last time i was in bkk i messed up and it cost me like 1,000 bth just to get some data. So i can see people with my experience just wanting the less hassle of the tourist plan.

No. Go to the kiosk, give them your phone and money. Tell them which plan you want and they do it all for you. Its very good service.

Cover yourself by writing down the USSD code beforehand for the plan that you want, including the price and hand that to then when you request the 49 baht SIM. Otherwise you risk them not knowing the plan that you want and them simply applying one of the poorer value plans of which they 'know'.

I was in Thailand Oct - Nov and went to true kiosk in the airport

I bought a sim and had a code for a package which I got from this thread.

Cost 49 for sim and loaded 300 onto the sim. the package I used was only around 200 b

I don't need streaming so a basic package for me which was plenty for a months stay in Thailand. I had data for all my trip so i could access email and some social media I use.

At the end of my trip I tried to extend the sim which on the plan I was on could do only for 90 days so I  changed the plan on my last day cost 30 baht and extended the sim for 12 months which cost 10b a month.

So you can buy the tourist package or save some money and get what you need.

Should cost 2 baht per month.

I don't recall, but why not let him know before you leave or connect to the free wifi when you land and contact him that way.

So, I went to the AIS shop at Central Festival, and asked for the top of the line 30 day tourist package (1620 baht).  The guy at the counter requested 50 baht, took my passport, disappeared, and then came back with a SIM card that he installed in my phone. Then, he instructed me to deposit 1620 baht in the top up machine. That turned out to be an ordeal, since the machine will not accept more than 1500 baht, nor make change.

Anyway, I did top up the 1620 baht, checked that everything worked, and then went back to my hotel, where the internet function stopped working. Do, I went back to AIS, where they told me the internet function was not implemented. A few code entries did the trick, since the first guy apparently did not set up the phone correctly. And now it is all good, I have 4G internet for 30 days.
