XE gives you the mid rate, the mid point between the buy and sell rate so not what you would get if you want to change money. Bangkok bank rate today was 48.88 / £

This is the first day since the start of March that the £ has been 50 against the Baht. Lets hope the upward trend continues, especially as I'm flying out there tomorrow.

It is a good reference as it is the mid rate. It isn't the 'official' rate though. There is no such thing. XE uses forex data to calculate the rate. These are the prices on the global exchange market and unavailable to us mere mortals. The banks will trade at these rates then add a little profit when dealing with the consumer. How much profit they take makes the difference between the various bank rates available to us. Often the bank rates will even be different at the branch compared to a bank branded exchange booth. It is possible the booths are franchised and can vary within set limits?

 

You always get a better rate in Thailand than at home. Exchange booths here in London are offering 44 / £ today!!!! I have no idea how that works but I did ask a money trader once and he said Thailand has a strange banking system, even he could not match inland rates (he specialised in large amount conversions for private individuals, house purchases, business investments etc) XE must plug into in-country Thai rates because they are always near the in-country mark.

 

Anyway I prefer to be a little more accurate so I don't get disappointed when I come to hand over my dosh.

 

Todays Bangkok bank rate 49.46 / £ Closest it has been to 50 for a long while. Looks like the days of 1000b = <£20 could be back!

It's been 50+ for the last weeks or so. The best rate I got was 50.8, today from £200 T/C I got 10,020baht so it's just above 50 still. I use KBank (green exchange booths).

Bangkok Bank rate dipped back below 50 today to 49.77 / £

So it is a little better now with 41.5 Baht/euro but there is a long way to go to the top with 54 Baht/euro i got a few years back. But it's still better as the 32 i got on my first trip.
