As will be based in Jomtien in the near future it will be Simons, Golden Friar and Pig n Whistle for the best tasting and value fish n chips as all seemed ok when was there earlier in the year.

Be nice to try any new establishments when there soon.

The fish/chips in P/W used to be good 3/4 years ago

After the longtime owner died the quality of the food dropped substantially

I went there a few weeks ago to try the fish/chips( mistake)

Absolute shite

Really heavy greasy batter surrounding a slimy bit of fish and undercooked chips

P/W is living off a long lost reputation

Sad but true....though I'm not sure it was ever that good.

Might be better if they offered a (more expensive) Cod option instead of just that awful Pangasius, but whatever it is they do with their batter would ruin it anyway.

I'd eat it!  Minus the peas..

Vitamin C apparently.

Don't understand why more restaurants don't offer Cod.....totally different experience to that soggy Pangasius (scam Dory) catfish crap.

At Casa Pascal we used to offer genuine John Dory, but since some other, even well-known restaurants in Pattaya, sell a different product under this name, we don’t offer it any longer on the menu. The reason is simple: these dishonest practices by some restaurants and hotels have devalued the exclusive John Dory. I find this a shame, because I adhere to a code of ethics that says: A professional chef must always cook what is sold on the menu. Without exception!

I hope this helps you a bit in your next culinary endeavor!

The next “Did you know?” is coming soon with the topic of “White asparagus from Europe and Savoy cabbage”.

Friar Tuck's is okay for 99 baht. 4 shops East of Jolly Friar. I am American so I don't eat much fish & chips but it was decent...and big. Only problem when I got back to room and opened there was no tartar. And please, no comments about my sexy legs.

As far as I know Casa Pascal also serve panga (aka Pacific Dory) in their brunch buffet, but it's true that they dont call it John Dory.

Price, quite simply.

Imported cod is much more expensive than panga, and many people dont notice (or dont care about) the difference, at least at the 99B entry point of the market. Those who are prepared to pay up to 300-400B for F&C should find plenty of cod available.

So what do they call it?

To be fair, do any restaurants call it Pangasius/Catfish?

I do agree with what CP said i.e. that the use of the name Pacific Dory has devalued John Dory, just google 'Pacific John Dory Scam"

I don't think the river farmed Pangasius catfish would fare too well in the Pacific somehow.

Yes, but my Q was why don't they offer it, at whatever price, which obviously wouldn't be 99 Baht.

Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see it for sale at many restaurants, which is why I've been buying it at Friendship and cooking it myself.

Palmers have it currently, as do Fryday, but what I have been served last time at JF as Cod was unacceptable.
