Quick question about tipping. Are you guys tipping at street food, boat restaurant, Kiss, hole in the wall place on Bukao? How much? What is acceptable here, thanks!

Also a favorite of mine for cheap food is walking down South Pattaya Road past the main Wat you will see three small Thai style places. These are on the left side before TukCom which will be on the right. The last one has a picture menu, don't know about the others. I can get chicken fried rice for 35 baht and it's a decent portion. They also have free water. Do you guys drink the free water?

No need to tip for street food or the hole in the wall. Kiss is probably used to getting tips since Thai people never eat there unless with a farang.

as far as the hole in the wall i don't think the place it that great, cheap but not really good

I disagree here, as for quality basic Thai, the food at the Hole in the Wall is excellent in my opinion.

Absurdly cheap.

On another tack, there is a food market on Central Rd (Pattaya Kalang) just up (east) from Second Rd. when I say just up, like 100 metres.

It is behind some permanent street stalls, and near the mango / coconut rice sellers.

Must be twenty small places in one covered area.

Basic but fantastic. They have a menu that covers all the "restaurants" /stalls, so you can order whatever you like from any stall at the one place, and just pay the one person. They sort it all out.

The seafood BBQ is magnificent. I had more seafood than Iceland at one meal with a ravenous BG, we didn't get close to finishing it all, leaving prawns, squid and much of a whole fish etc.

I had two beers and a mango drink, total cost about 550.

So more expensive than the Hole in the wall, but great choice and as I said, huge amounts of fantastic seafood. I'm Australian, a pretentious prat and used to decent seafood - this stuff was good.

Left King Seafood on Walking St, where I ate, for dead.

Cheers,

There is a dumpster behind 7/11 on Soi 15. They usually trow their week old hot dogs out on Tuesday evening?

When i eat Thai food i usually prefer to eat in places that are packed with locals, a good local crowd usually means the food is good among other things... The hole in the wall is a farang oriented place, you won't see many Thai's eating there without a farang any more but it does give the 'Thai experience' to visitors.

they used to have some smelly dude, don't think he was Thai, serving water and he did not look healthy. Not sure if he is still there but one of the rules of thumb in Asia is the people selling food should look healthy or skip the place. Last time i went was about 2 years ago but i walk by it often

I agree on eating with the locals, however with the Hole in the Wall, I think it is a victim of its success with the falangs.

Locals don't want to eat with tourists as much as we want to eat with them.

Didn't see any unhealthy people there, (apart from falangs) and really without eating there for two years, maybe its time you lashed out 30 baht and gave it another shot?

The only BG I took there, called me a cheap charlie going in, but smart coming out.

She thought the food was good.

But each to their own.

as i said i walk by it often mate... not interested in sharing a table with a hairy farang with a Singha vest that talks to himself and can't find his soap.

I think Lengkee has duck and rice for about 40 baht minus the scumbags.

Yeah, you are right about that part.

Its no wonder locals don't want to go.

Some great cheap eats can be found at the two street vendors who set up stall every evening in front of the family mart on second road just south of soi 13.

One stall specialises in khao man gai, stewed pork on rice and chicken/ pork kwai teow. The other offers more typical (and very spicy) isaan fair but both are delicious for 30-50 baht per dish. THe chicken kwai teow is my fav' in the whole of LOS.

Forget boat bakery and kiss - these places are for first time tourists who know no better. Boat bakery's breakfast has gotta be the worst I have ever tasted of any brekkie anywhere! 39 baht sounds cheap but there is nothing on that plate that is edible!

went to the boat bakery last night and was not impressed.

1) GF ordered the noodle salad... it was rank . She tried to eat it but could not

2) I ordered a pork shop. It was OK but they poured gravy all over it. Should be served on the side

3) No female waitresses. This is basically a gay restaurant.

Only thing decent was the big bottle of Leo at 65 baht

I won't be going back again.

My favorite stall for khao man gai (chicken over rice) is on the corner of Soi Diana and LK Metro. 30 or 35 baht (can't remember) per plate plus a bowl of soup. They're only open for dinner.

Similar stall on corner South rd and soi Buckaw same price and only at night, great value and good eating

I ordered steak & chips @ Sailor Bar & got seven chips; seven lucky chips!

Still, the booze prices can't be beaten!

I ordered Steak (grade 1?) & Chips @ Kiss & was given a fork & a spoon. Steak my arse; actually, it tasted like it. The German / Thai food is good value there though.

Peace. :GoldenSmile1:

Fish and Chips at the Jolly Friar in Soi Lengkee, best I have had yet and very reasonable, don't get the large portion of chips, unless you're very hungry or a greedy fat bastard.
