Be interested to hear how you go.

Sure, I will report back.

As I remember the METV was introduced in November, so there must be someone out there with experience?

I have 4 entry stamps in passport within 6 months, but have no been here for over 90 days within those 6 months.

As i read the rules on the dk thai Embassy page i have not broken any rules, they did also let me in.

But they also say. Regulations are subject to change without notice.

However thinking real hard about going for the 6 months multi entry visa, for the rest of this year.

Rather safe than sorry

No eternal rewards will forgive us now for wasting the dawn

Don't think there is info on back to back though. Getting the METV is pretty straightforward.

    Visa Rules

30th May 2016, info is up to date.

  • Tourist arriving via an international airport will usually be given a 30 day visa exempt stamp, however travelers using OUT/IN method to extend stay will be questioned after 4-6 consecutive visa exempt entries.
  • A valid Tourist Visa allow 60 day stay and a valid Non Immigrant Visa allow 90 day.

this is                http://www.thaivisaservice.com/           take on new rules

Beyond 90 Days

A dose of good news awaits tourists—following the new regulation set by Thai Immigration, visitors can now come regularly to Thailand without limiting their stay within a total of 90 days in a six-month period.

The restriction has already been abolished so tourists can now visit Thailand as often as they want, provided that they obtain 30 day Visa on Arrival at airports and 15 day Visa on Arrival if they are traveling via land borders.

However, immigration officials still recommend getting visas prior to arrival in Thailand, as they remind visitors that back-to-back short visas are not the proper way to extend the stay in the country on a long-term basis.

This new regulation is predicted to greatly benefit travel agencies as more border trips are expected to be booked with the increased influx of tourists eager to renew their visas.

Copy&paste from Thai embassy London branch http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/188

3x30 days in a 180 days period

Tourist Visa Exemption please click here

Passport holders of the countries listed below are not required to obtain a visa when entering Thailand for tourism purposes and will be permitted to stay in Thailand for a period not exceeding 30 days on each visit. If such foreigners enter Thailand at immigration checkpoints, which border neighbouring countries (overland crossing), they will be allowed to stay for 15 days each time. The exemption to this is Malaysian nationals crossing overland from Malaysia who are granted a period of stay not exceeding 30 days each time.

Since 20 December 2013,Nationals of (G7) the following countries who enter via a land crossing or enter via an airport will be entitled to a 30 day visa exemption , UK, U.S.A, Canada, Italy, Germany, Japan, France

Foreigners who enter Thailand under this Tourist Visa Exemption category may only do so for 30 days at one time with a maximum of 3 times in a 6 month period. (Passport or travel document must be valid for at least 1 month after the date of first entry).

Foreigners entering Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption category must provide proof of adequate finances for the duration of stay in Thailand at the port of entry (i.e., traveller’s cheque or cash equivalent to 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family).

Foreigners entering Thailand by any means under the Tourist Visa Exemption category are required at the port of entry to have proof of onward travel (confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets) to leave Thailand within 30 days of the arrival date (otherwise a tourist visa must be obtained).

Please note that Tourist Visa Exemption only applies to foreigners holding passports issued by the countries listed below. Travel documents for people from other countries issued by these countries are not acceptable.

Immigration is toughening up.

It may be at the discretion of the immigration officer stamping your passport.

But the rules are clear 3 Visa Exempt Stamps in 6 months.

I just arrived on a single entry Visa and don't feel comfortable going to Cambodia or Philippines and returning to Bangkok hoping to get a visa exempt stamp.

I have my passport full of single and double entry visas.

Immigration can, and will do what they want.

Be cautious is my advice.

Again,I don`t think that the rules are "clear" in anyway when it`s still up to the discretion of the immigration officer if you`re let in more than 3 times every 6 months.

The ruling is clear. The enforcement is discretionary, as I stated.

True.

The official government sites that are in English appear to be out of date.

These are visa specialists interpretations. They seem to tally with what's being reported.

And they try to push the Thailand Elite Visa option.I seem to remember that they had a similar scheme under Thaksin which was then scrapped after a couple of years

Nope...  Not on a visa exemption... they are extendable by 30 days for 1900 baht from your friendly local Immigration Branch, but are strictly single entry.  Meaning that if you do leave for a couple of days/weeks, that visa exemption dies when you leave, and a new one is issued when you return.

So for the example described above, it would indeed be 2 Visa exemptions. Whether or not they let you back in, is, and always has been, up to the individual you are fronting at the Immigration Desk.  Doesn't matter if you have a brand new passport, and never been to Thailand, the Immigration Guy/Gal, can turn you back for no reason whatsoever, other than they "just can". That is is within their powers.  do they do it?  Not often, but the point is they "can".

What you may be thinking of is the re-entry permit, that is available to blokes on retirement extensions etc.  Guys on those extensions, need to be aware that if they DO leave the Kingdom, and have not purchased a re-entry permit, their retirement extension dies when they leave the country, and it is back to square one when they get back.  My advice is, even if you have no intention of leaving the country when you renew your retirement extension, buy a re-entry permit as a matter of course  when you renew.  You may have to make an unplanned  mercy dash home thru the year, and it it would be easy to forget the re-entry permit..

Get a visa, makes it a whole lot easier, but again, is no guarantee of entry to the country.

Going through immigration, the officer showed me computer screen where it looked like i was being red flagged for to many visits. No idea what the screen actually said, but seeing something red and immigration going throug my stamps in passport did worry me abit.

Had to show somekind of prof of my job at home, seemed they did not think people go on holiday so often.

Since i just got off work i still had my mustercard and a opito offshore certificate in my bag. Did not really please them. But they let me through, and told me that i had to bring id card with picture from work next time.

Never thougt it would be an issue with multiple trips a year. There are always minimum 16 days between visits.

Anybody experinced anything similar.

They want an ID card with a picture! Wasn't your passport good enough?

Yeah not sure mate. I just got the form off their website and provided everything they asked for on the form. Posted it off and the visa was in the post a week later.

Suppose I am fortunate/unfortunate? I am an old bugger so have the retirement option if I need yo go thst way.

In the end if they do restrict visa waivers a simple way around that for many will be the SETV which at a 1000 baht is an hour or two drinking for me, so no big deal.

Personally I don't know why they don't go like Cambodia, Philippines, Laos and Vietnam and just charge short term tourists for entering or leaving the country. Would be a significant windfall.
