I started this thread as I wanted advice and you have taken time to give your advice; which I am grateful, but how would you feel if in 3 months time your Doctor said 'I've got some bad news for you Mr. Machine, you have got HIV. It's a pity that you didn't get some PEP treatment straight after the incident as it may have prevented it'?

The second thing about getting tested immediately was to ensure that I didn't already have something which I could have passed to the girl.

It's reassuring that the 'odds' are stacked in my favour, trouble is the 'game' is my life!

Hopefully this whole thread will be of some use to others that might find themselves in the same situation and they will see that there are a whole range of responses available ranging from 'do nothing', get HIV tested in 3 months time, get some anti-STi meds immediately or get the full range of tests and anti-HIV and STi meds immediately (oh, or dettol and a wirebrush).

Have a urine test first because you can get results all clear after a few weeks and blood tests in two mths for the rest - aids .Same girl

Only people with information update of the early 1980's (unfortunately these are most people) are afraid of positive test results.

That times, media informed people, that doctors had to tell some healthy looking young people after diagnosing HIV, that they will die within next 6 months.

Media forgot to inform people about today's situation, resulting in still scaring memories and leaving people afraid of testing.

As herpes viruses and some others (BTW, does anyone scare HSV-test, HBV-test, ... ?), HIV can currently not be removed from ones body, but once-daily-pills enable virus suppression below detectable level, non-infectiousness and lifetime expectations as non-infected people.

That sounds not very scaring.

Nowadays, people should learn to be afraid of developing AIDS after many years of untreated HIV infection due to fears of test.

The HIV-test result is always a good result !

If negative, it is good not to have the virus.

If positive, it is good to know it and to get your once-daily pill.

I did my last test about 10 days ago, i nearly forgot to go back to hospital to get my result in afternoon...

It's always good to get tested but a positive test is not good in any way shape or form and so we should all do everything we can to avoid catching it (wear a condom - always) and potentially spreading it (wear a condom - always). Sure anti viral medicines have come a long way and so many infected people live relatively long lives but they are often in a great deal of pain as anti viral medicines play havoc with your body. Play safe - and bag up!

I don't doubt scientific data and statistics. That said, "low" and "no" chance aren't the same. No one ever think it will happen to them until it happens to them. And when it does, they are shock and surprise.

If the chance of HIV transmission is so low, why is there an epidemic? These two "facts" seems contradictory

Like lottery, however low the chance of winning, SOMEONE always wins it.

HIV isn't a particularly easy virus to spread unlike many common flus. In fact a person could have unprotected sex many many times with an HIV infected person and not catch the virus... or you could be unlucky and catch it the first time you have sex with them. It's just not worth the risk to anyone to tempt fate. The world does have an epidemic as there is a lot of unprotected sex in the world and also other high risk activities such as drug users sharing needles. If you keep playing with fire chances are you will eventually get burnt.

Thanks for the post!

I was wondering when someone would mention the fact that people with hiv are living pretty normal lives these days... Magic Johnson for example... who by the way is spokesperson for a new in home instant hiv test product that just came on the market... you can actually test a new partner on the spot, and know at least they didn't have hiv three months ago....

I got tested when I came home from my trip, my wife requested I do so... god bless her, when I was going she said "be careful", and when I got back she asked me to get tested... good wife!

oh, tested negative, will test again in three months to be certain... and I never had an exposure incident, but still being careful and establishing the facts, for my wife, and hey, if you mess with p4p it is good to get checked up once in a while no matter what...

I don't know what kind of quick test you're refering to, but I think you should update your knowledge.

For most tests (for not saying all), the antibodies can be detected 3 weeks after infection. Not 3 month.

If you turn negative after 28 days, you will not turn positive after 3 month.

That said, if the test is also testing antigeneP24, the delay is 14 days. But I don't think the quick test goes for the antignen P24. Only a full 4th generation test in a clinic does it.
