I've had the ear wax removal done at Nemo and it's that thing where they light a paper thing on fire in your ear. They showed me afterwards and I'm a bit skeptical because the wax they showed me was wet when my ears usually produce dry wax and it didn't seem to have any effect on me. It was a fun little experience though. All the other services at Nemo are top notch though.

Candling does not work at all. The idea was that the flames would create suction in the paper tube. Suffice it to say you could probably measure it with a sensitive enough device but it would not lift a fruit fly.

I'm amazed people pay $35 for this. Buy a rubber bulb (used for all sorts of things) for $1 and jet warm water along the top of the ear canal and it will soften the wax and it will run out into the sink or shower (or floor if you are not over a basin of some type) sluicing out of the bottom of the ear canal.

It takes a few squeezes and the water should obviously not be boiling hot to make tea.

In Scotland the procedure has changed, they don't syringe anymore, instead they irrigate with a water machine similar to the water machines people use to floss their teeth. Ahead of that, half a tea spoon of Olive oil in each ear for 2 weeks will soften it so it comes out easy

I had that irrigation at my local GP surgery. Didn't work for me. Too gentle.

I went to vietnam and they use 6 inch long needles to detach the gunk from your ear canal. I had a real problem and the poor chap was horrified when he looked in my ear. After some serious work with the needles, he pulled out a giant donut of earwax. Unbelievable when i saw it.

The GP let me walk out of their surgery with that monster still in my ear.

I don't often recommend them but in this case Bangkok Pattaya Hospital is the place to go. They have a new hi-end suction machine. You can see the action on a big TV screen as they do it. The doc will look first and will tell you if you need it or not. If they do go ahead the big TV is great because you can see for yourself what was in there and what was removed.  Price varies 800-1500 baht - or so for farang. You don't need an appointment. They have several ENT specialists on staff that can do it but of course you can make one if you wish. You can do that online.

In my case flushing has never worked.

Did you soften the wax for a couple of weeks before your GP had a shot?

Yes, the OP asked about Pattaya, but i highly recommend going to a Vietnamese barber shop (with beautiful girls) to have the ear cleaning and full works - hair shampoo massage, manicure, etc... Will be less VN dong than Thai baht in a Thailand hospital ear cleaning and a lot more fun/erotic :)

I was in Vietnam when this reporter met with my Saigon friend who took us to various shops around the city.  My Saigon friend would go to these 'barber shops' a couple of times a week as it was inexpensive and an exceptionally pleasing experience.

There's a Vietnamese barber shop on 3rd Road, north of Klang. Map location a few seconds into the video below. Someone wrote about going there and said it was good value at 600B for 90 mins. Also said caucasians are more than welcome there.

A bit, maybe a week before. I recall buying hydrogen peroxide, or something similar.

Based on the struggle the guy with the needles had, unlikely it would have helped. Felt like he'd burst my eardrum several times as there was a popping sound when he would detach a bit more. Kinda scary, but it needed sorting.

Past few times i`ve been for mine doing they have used the water machine thingy , its a lot safer than syringing apparently.

Agree, this is the place to go. Went there last time and it was very busy. Mostly asian customers. Planning to go again before i leave pattaya!  Very satisfied with the service.

Not sure I'd trust a random shop prodding utensils in my ear, doubly so if there's any kind of pain which some BM's have reported.

Had problems with wax build up in the past, peroxide did nothing, syringing had little effect, but a $200 ENT appointment did the trick, he had some kind of camera + suction device that cleared out everything. It would take as little as 2-3 weeks to build up again, so not a viable long term option. In retrospect, had I put olive oil as mentioned for the weeks before syringing, that probably would have worked. Any oil in there makes the wax heaps softer.

Anyway, I find dabbing cotton tips of alcohol + vinegar (or just alcohol, from the hand cleaning alcohol bottles) around the canal entrance does the job fine as a maintenance solution to prevent buildup, which is also effective to prevent swimmers ear. It dessicates the wax making it brittle and non-adhesive, a few days later it'll start to fall out.

It was @Garzan that posted about his experience at the Vietnamese barber shop.

I would never let anyone other than a hospital touch my ears, certainly NOT a barber. I went to the Memorial a while back, cost 2,500 baht but no waiting, just walked in.  There is an ear clinic on Pattaya Klang just before Big C Extra which has evening sessions.

I'll also add that I went to Nin Barber Shop on Soi Buakhao just after the Easy R-Con dog leg headed toward Pattaya Klang on the Beach side of the road. Nin is actually a barber shop and that's where I was getting by shaves and haircut. I added an ear cleaning to a shave one morning. In my own opinion, the lady at Nin did a better job than the girl at Hwang Je (but the girl was ~far~ cuter) for 100 baht. I think it would have been more effective if I'd planned for it and used something to soften the wax before I went in. Even so, between the two of them, there was a noticeable difference in how my ears reacted to altitude changes on the flight home.

This video does not show an ear cleaning but it does show the front of the barbershop and the color of the signage.

That's called "ear candling" and in no way shape or form removes wax from your ears.  It's one of those new-age bullshit "remedies" that's useless at best, and potentially harmful.

If you have impacted wax to the point that it's becoming a medical issue, save yourself the trouble of seeing Supachai at the barber and go see a legitimate ENT at the hospital.  As always, seeing non-medical personnel for medical issues opens the door to a bad outcome.  You can fuck yourself up quite nicely by fucking up your ears.

Personally, I just dump a capful of OTC hydrogen peroxide in my ears every month or two, to bubble and fizz any nasties away.  I've been doing it for years on recommendation of my ENT and no longer have the issues with wax buildup I used to.

As always, it would be insane to take medical advice from this board, so go hit up your ENT.  Good luck!

I use baby oil Hp each ear 5 mins haven’t used QTip in years

so baby oil eat 1 the ear 2 then HP ear 1 then 2 5 mins

Must take ages. The big syringe uses mass of water not impact to soften the wax and flush it out. A water pick sounds like a long exercise.

Probably the olive oil for 2 weeks before is important, but the wax came out easily within a minute or two, no discomfort at all vs syringing can be painful depending on how heavy handed the nurse is

He puts baby oil in his ears instead of using cotton buds (I see you have a U.S. flag so you probably didn't need this par)t.  I'm not sure what HP is but it's possible that he's calling baby oil "sauce".

Since starting this thread I've had the wax removed from my ears locally.  It took two hospital visits, which is two more than I would have liked.  I can hear a lot better in both ears now.

Why not use Murine?? It's been around for many years, and it’s so easy to use.

You just put a few drops in your ear and you hear a little bubbling sound as it softens the wax. After a few minutes you flush your ear with the included soft bulb washer. I prefer to do it in the morning before my shower and my shower head does the rinsing.

Easy, convenient, and works just great.

I can't understand messing around with oil and water when this kind of technology is available at a reasonable price. BTW, the TV monitor at BPH is far bigger and higher resolution as this one

Not really convenient for me.  I imagine shipping liquids internationally is a hassle and then there's the ridiculously expensive  international shipping costs.

BTW, if you search google for "Murine New Zealand", a disease that infects mice shows up..
