Colonoscopy Fear

There are bowel preps that are less than a gallon but they are brand name and expensive, insurance normally doesn't cover it in the states. Moviprep is a popular one, you can sign up for coupons at their website to lower the cost.

So 3 weeks on, I have changed my diet which wasn’t hard as it’s called a ‘full fat diet’ with lots of bacon, sausage, steak, eggs and full cream milk :) Basically all of my so called healthy eating (whole grain bread, skim milk, fruit, etc.) was making my gastro system fail.

Thanks for the post mate. Started a useful and informative thread.

I was very surprised to see that fruit was screwing up your gutz. If possible could you elaborate on that bit please?

I was surprised as well but had to do with the high sugar. This is the quick summary of what I have to avoid. 48334263f9e1c28971b3bfd88671657b.jpgI've since avoided it all except for the Liquid bread ;)

That's insane. I never thought that even fruits can be bad.

By the way, what a coincidence, I just heard news today that a relative of a friend just passed away due to colon cancer at age 49...

Had it done three times, once awake and twice asleep. They prescribed a valium be taken before the appointment. Felt zero pain or even discomfort and it was interesting watching the inside my gut on the screen. The later two were under anesthesia and I remember nothing about the procedure. As said previously, the worst part is drinking a gallon of the stuff that's ruined lemonade for me. It ain't no big deal.

Aussieoutcast, firstly I happy this thread survived the data problems of the forum last week as I know you were worried it was lost.
I have had countless colonoscopies as I have Ulcerative Colitus.
There’s really nothing to worry about. In the UK and Thailand they give you prep which is basically a laxative that clears you out. That’s the worst part.
The procedure itself is more uncomfortable than painful. I always have a sedative and fall asleep pretty quickly.
I would endorse the OP in his observation that the whole thing is well worth doing. Good thread.

Pic from UK NHS website. Those who have problems, how many of the 6 areas do you tick?

Did the forum moderators make a post about it (the data problems)?
What exactly was lost in the outage?

Totally agree - same in the US. I was completely out during the procedure. No pain or discomfort before or after.

I’ve been in for the procedure twice. Fortunately only a few polyps were found and they tested negative. Next one will be in five years.
If you are over 50 or have a family history of bowel cancer it’s best not to put it off.
The prep sucks and the procedure is uncomfortable but it could save your life.

Guys, dont just think about getting a colonoscopy, please just schedule it.  Just over a year ago I was having bleeding, and got one scheduled.  .  Got the colonoscopy, and two weeks later I was on operating table for colon cancer.  Fast forward one year, and I'm in perfect health, stage 1 cancer, no spread, no chemo required.  Lost 40 pounds, and will be moving to thailand in 3 years, to be with my LLT girlfriend.

I am one lucky SOB.

As Phil knows I've had Colitis too, I started passing blood and after 2 weeks I just decided to bite the bullet and go to the doctors, waiting to see him was the longest 10 minutes of my life but it was just a matter of  up on the couch and drop 'em, blob of KY and 2 fingers up the wrong 'en to check my prostate. No problem there so I had to have an endoscopy.

The doctor that did it was an old lady who was brilliant, so put my mind at ease, laughing and joking all the way through. After the examination they were cleaning all the equipment including the endoscope, I asked the doctor if it was the same one the stuck down peoples throats and she replied "Yes, and I've heard them all before" expecting a sarcastic reply, "I hope you wash it well" I replied to which she said "yes, of course we do" so I said "Good, because I don't want to get Gingivitis of the arse hole". She burst out laughing and said "OK, I've never heard that one before".

I’m writing this in the hope that I convince at least one person who fears a Colonoscopy to have one.

I’m 52 and had ignored the advertising that all Men should get a Colonoscopy at 50 and every 5 years after. This was despite the fact that I had two work colleagues who died of Bowell cancer and neither of them had a colonoscopy until it was too late (one had blood in stool for a year and was too embarrassed to tell anyone).

As for my story, I went through a bad divorce and suffered serious depression and had concluded that I just wanted my life to be over (never contemplated suicide, but was just going through the life motions until it was over). I then suffered all of the symptoms of bowell cancer (what did we do before google doctor lol) and thought well this is it, only a few months to go and I still didn’t get a colonoscopy (for some reason I thought this was too embarrassing to go through). Finally, my symptoms got so bad, that I almost called an ambulance at midnight (constant burping, farting, inconsistent stools and stomach felt like it was on fire on the inside).  This brought me to the realization that I’d rather suffer the embarrassment of a Colonoscopy and at least know how long I had left.

Now for my procedure, I saw my doctor at 3pm Wednesday and was scheduled for an urgent colonoscopy on Friday at 9am (the urgency of this of course freaked me out a little and made me realize how stupid I was to have avoided it so long). Normally, you have a 3 day diet to follow and then take a cleanser 24 hours prior to the procedure. Due to the urgency of my appointment, they waived the diet and just gave me extra cleanser. This involved taking a glass of cleanser with a glass of water every 20 minutes over a 3 hour period (due to my extra cleanser, I had to wake up at 4am and do again for 2 hours). Obviously this cleanser did its job and cleaned out my system so that only liquid was coming out (you know you succeeded when liquid is clear like water).

Arriving at the hospital, all of the nurses and doctor were fantastic friendly people and they really made me laugh and relax. I was smiling right up until I passed out :) Wake up was also nice with a Nurse whispering in my ear ‘Wake Up’ lol. In hindsight, I have no idea why I feared this as there really was nothing to it.

Now the results, they found and removed 6 Polyps, 3 of which had positive signs that they would become full blown cancer. They also found that I had Cardiovascular disease, which gives all of the same symptoms of Bowell Cancer. The good news is that this can be treated by change of diet only :)

I can now eat whatever I like (the fattier the better) with the only stipulation being ‘only eat when hungry’ and ‘stop when full’. This has now given me a new lease on life and I am now living life the way it should be lived. All due to finally having that fearsome Colonoscopy that wasn’t that scary after all.

Hope this helps someone, if in any doubt, just do it.

Where did you go for colonoscopy?

this is basically a keto die, research it, and make sure you find a way to keep some fibre in your diet, even psylliom husks is actually a good way to do it.. your body will be starved of carbs, and you will be in a state of ketosis ... this diet works well for some, omegas 3s are important as well, the canned fish like mackeral, sardines, anchoveys, tuna salmon, all are high in this...when you eat fats, you get fuller faster, hard to over eat.. you should be losing alot of weight, as your body will burn fat for energy, instaed of carbs or sugar. stay away from sugar, fat and sugar dont mix... you can cheat once in awhile, but be dilligent...

I have yet to have a colonscopy, was set to see a specialist and they called and and cancelled saying they wouold reschedule, but they never called back, state of our medical care in Canada.... will deffinately talk to doc about it. or get it done on Thailand....

Hi Guys

I have had 2 colonoscopy's so far they are far from being a unpleasant procedure but for piece of mine most necessary, both times in hospital without anesthesia and awake all the time, had both precedure's up the backside and the tube down thru the throat into the stomach and both times recived a negative result, don't like the procedure but would always have it to stay safe and piece of mind.

The camera down the throat is an adoscopy, a separate procedure from a colonscopy. Just mentioning it so someone going for a colonscopy doesn't think they will getting a tube into their stomach also.

I thought that was called an endoscopy?

I would never do the colonoscopy awake.  I will say that the day of the colonoscopy is the best day of sleep I get all year.   It's such a deep and restful sleep and no pain when you wake up. But man that day before is a bitch chugging that God-awful Liquid.
