Transaero have been offering returns from London to Bangkok via Moscow for just over £250!

Expect the Charters a lot of Russians use ( or did use) were even cheaper.

Don't think so , I went to the market in Prathamnak Hill today , used to be a loads of Russians roaming there , not today , very few. Obviously , the Thai are missing the Russians , especially the 7-11 and Family Mart shops.

Hi Jocky King,

Will be staying in Prathamnak Hill, can you please tell me where the market is.

Thanks in advance.

Ignoring the financial benefits of Russian tourism for a moment, the Thais are almost bound to find Russian folks hard to deal with because their cultural ethos is completely opposed.

The Thai way in general is be polite, smile, don't argue, be calm.  The Russian way is be strong, push to the front, be assertive.  Different ways of dealing with the world created by the environment and culture that each live in.  I'm sure the Russian approach to life rubs the Thais completely the wrong way, but the Russians are just behaving in the manner that's accepted as normal in their own part of the world.

When it comes down to it most nationalities probably cause some grumbling in Thailand.  Aussies don't exactly have the best rep' as 'quality tourists' in any area that involves booze and nightlife either.  As long as the money flows, the Thais will continue to smile and complain discretely in the background.  That's just business in action.

Cheers

I agree with most of what you say Pethie, except the part about pushing in!  Thais might not push in a assertive way, more a sneak in to the front of the line!

No that is the way it is.  They only put up with foreigners because of the money we bring here.  In general, they hate us.

Do the Thais who live overseas hate everyone too?

What CBM said is actually expected baseline - about getting picked up, dinners etc.

The iPad is his f-up though, maybe Russian TSA took it, they're probably hiring from the same pool of detritus.

Well, of course the left iPad is on me, but I remembered it immediately after clearing immigration, and I was the first one off the plane (from business class), so it wasn't like hours after the fact ... they could have easily escorted me back to the plane ...I would have retrieved it in 5 min and before everyone was off the plane.  In cases like this they can be understanding and help you, or they can care less and push you aside.  My point was simply that they chose the latter (and, I daresay, I would have got it back from a TG flight in the same situation ... difference is attitude).

Actually, the big deal was not being picked up at the airport ... that IS a big deal in Moscow ... it's dangerous ... like you can be kidnapped ... you get a driver to pick you up, you get their info in advance, you ask for thier ID ... if it all checks out, then you go with them.  Random "taxis" are not a good idea .... police and KGB don't care if you die there.

Was speaking to a cafe owner (mature Thai women) who was half German and Half Thai but spoke perfect English as she lived in the UK and Germany for years, seemed very well educated. She was really happy to see me (English) in Jomtien saying she is sick of Russians. She said they are very rude and abrupt when speaking to them, never say please/thank you and half of them of thieving gits. Then she explained about how the air fares where in the region of £200 and less return from Russia and that's why lots of them come over but she said most of her friends and family feel the same way about them.

She also mentioned the Russian ladys where under cutting and doing a lot more for the money than Thai girls would so not only are they impacting on social aspects they are taking money from Thai's also...she followed that rant with some expletives too lol.

More Ruskie bashing.  Russians bring their wives and families and pretty much stay to themselves.   I have spoken to many Thais and they dislike Russians no less than any other group.  Most complaints I have heard were Indians, Chinese and Brits lol.

Ain't that the truth about drunk Aussies - whenever I see drunk Aussie males (and I usually hear them well before I see them), I try to give them a wide berth and not engage.  A lot of Aussies need to learn to be happier drunks. Chill pill.

Had an Aussie GF years ago - a party animal, and a bit of a nympho, good fun.  :-)

Russins bring their wifes and they buy beer and booze in 7/11. That's why bar people don't like them. They come in restaurants without shirt and this is not the Thai way. They eat a lot at restaurants and if you really look it's the restaurants the shops and travel agency's who have Russian language signs.so when you look at it again it's all about the money. Personally I never had any trouble with Russians. They are nice to talk to but very bad in speaking English.

The tourism in Pattaya has been badly hit by the shortage of the Russians . 7-11 and Family Mart missed them badly too .

I can't speak for the views of all Thai people of course. I did have a nice Thai couple from Bangkok tell me they didn't like Russians because they felt that Russians looked down on them.

Definitely think it is the culture thing.

That's probably why they love the Japanese because they are mostly a polite culture. I know that's why I like them. Never been to Russia but every-time they are on the news I never see them smile.....

LMAO jerry beat me to it... I don't exactly feel the warm welcome in LOS. I imagine the Thai's complain about us to them!

Here in Vietnam it's overrun with Russians and local people do make negative comments about them... They are always relieved to chat with me in English. They say Russians never smile and they are rude.

Who knows? I mind my own business.

Funny about Australians too... In two years of traveling the only issues I ever had were with drunk Australian males. Usually stumbling up to me out of the blue and talking shit. Blind drunk and shirtless, sucking on a bottle of Chang in a Burger King... Good lord I'm hoping that's not normal behavior down there in OZ.

Most Russian tourists in Pattaya seem to be working class folks who have seldom (if ever) traveled outside their own country before. They tend to be lacking in manners, which is made worse by their very limited English, as they tend to push and shout when they aren't understood. However, I worked with a pretty, well educated young Russian for a while. She was the opposite of what you see in Pattaya and showed me that the stereotype is nothing more than that. I can understand most Thais not liking the obnoxious types, but there are plenty of Russians who don't fit that mold.

My grandmother was born in Hungary, and I grew up hearing reasons why I should despise Russians. But I don't. The present generation can't be blamed for what their parents and grandparents may have done, any more than can the younger Germans, Japanese, French, Brits or Americans. Nevertheless, Pattaya bar, nightclub, and restaurant owners should have learned a valuable lesson: "Don't put all your eggs into one basket." The businesses that opened specifically for Russian only tourists are in deep doodoo, and they have no one to blame for it but themselves. Som nam na ...

Had an opportunity to party with a bunch of 4 ... From their ice hockey team (I believe) in Hua Hin ... In the holiday inn disco ..were fun blokes .. Poured a lot of beer into their cup and drank from it. I was with my tg at that time but however I did notice that FL's were more than happy to hit on them. For reasons I don't understand, although 2 of them were single, they did not take a girl back with them. Perhaps they were just there to party.
