Whose Tracking you online

Featured Replies

Just saw this on Al-Jazeera's "The Stream"

You can download an add on for most browsers called "Collusion". It will show you who is watching/tracking you while you are on a website. Really interesting. I have attached a screenshot of whose tracking me while I post this.

Food for thought, just wondering what your opinions are the whole subject of tracking etc.

The strangest one on the list is Bangkokbank.com  heheh  :)

I just downloaded a program called "Ghostery" that helps you block tracking.

Now that is very scary!

Is there a way to stop most of these websites from tracking you?

Isn't there an option on your web browser that prevents tracking?

Install CCleaner and set it to delete all your cookies when windows starts. You can add some cookies to you favourite section so that they don't get deleted.

I delete my cookies after every session and I NEVER open windows. (because I have an apple)

But thanks for the advice as in the future I will be getting a PC again...I think.

Does ghostery works well .., I thought if you already are running security software .., Ghostery would not work properly ..

I just installed Ghostery today, and it seems to be working. I run AVG free for virus and security

Chrome: CTRL+Shift+N

No stored cookies.  I also use CC cleaner.  Those who are truly paranoid can also set up a proxy.

If you think that's scary you should know that google stores all your web page history for years , if you use chrome and have a gmail account you can actually see some of it by going to  https://history.google.com/history/ Mine recorded all the way back to 2006 and listed 71,000 searches .

You can turn that off and erase you history if you want. At least they give you the option. Technically, you don't even have to use Chrome. Just need a Gmail account and be logged in for them to track you, even if you are logged in on another page or tab.

Thanks for pointing this out. I just deleted the history and disabled it. I would usually make sure I wasn't logged into gmail whn browsing, but it seems they track you anyway

I was part of a 30 unit condo building that shared a Gmail account for file sharing, calendar, and emails from the board members.  No one in the building realized that Gmail accounts track your online history, so no one turned it off.  When people signed into the shared account and then searched for something using Google on a new tab or page, their history was being recorded by this central Gmail account.  I would die laughing at some of the searches when I reviewed the history and had a game where I'd try to guess who matched up to what search. The top trends where 1) Over 50% of the people in the building looked up their own names, 2) Not as many people looked up porn as you would think, but those who did had absolutely disgusting searches, 3) There are lots of people in the closet, living in denial, and 4) At least 1 person in the building had an STD.

Still, this is nowhere near as annoying (but funny) as the old Amazon.com social network fiasco where you'd get suggestions based on what items people you know were buying. So, say I go to Amazon.com and buy a 50 pack of condoms, it used to share that info with friends in your circle and say "little evil just about 50 condoms" to entice you to buy them too.  Embarrassing.  Someone sued Amazon.com over that one.

Super illustration. Sums computer surveillance up perfectly.

I reported on another topic that Outlook Express blocked a photo I sent to a friend in an email and "Steve" sent me an email telling me. So Big brother is checking your email.

And it wasn't even a naughty one .I still don't know why they blocked it.

Sex without love is an empty experience;

But as empty experiences go, it is one of the best.

Easy fix. Instead of knowing who is tracking you, install DoNotTrackMe, a free web browser utility from Abine and nobody will track you again. Works like a charm.

Growing Old Disgracefully

Thats just a list of links that our website links too.

That list contains many sites from which things are downloaded from. For example on this page Little Evil's signature would bring up a link to Bangkok Bank (as shown in the OP's list) and a countdown timer (I can see 2 of these in the OP's list). The people that you have to worry about spying on you are not on the list as the browser (or any other program on your computer) will not be aware that the signal has been intercepted. See how many of you in the US can find your government spying on you... :P

Very true. This is just a list of hotlinked content.  If someone puts a Youtube video in their post, Youtube will end up on this list. If someone puts a picture in their post, it will show up as well. If the webpage has an applet on it, the hosting server will show up on this list. One could also just look at the source code for the webpage and see on the names without this "tracking" finder thing.

That being said, the owners of this content can see your IP addresses (within limitations) when you view the video or look at the picture. Your browser needs to download the images/videos/app data, and in doing so, your IP address is recorded in the handshake. This is just how the interwebs works. Yes, Google will take their Youtube hit data and compile it in all sorts of crazy ways that can most likely figured out who you are through inconceivably complex algorithms.  Should you care? Not really, unless you have something to hide.

Scumbag: You bring up a good point in that the one we should be concerned with is the US Government. That is true, but how do you think they will be tracking us? Through subpoenas to companies like Google for their data. So a little concern for the people in the list is only health, as the end user of that data may be the government.

So any of you bright sparks are bright enough to say how does it effect me day to day then please ?
