Looks really great. However they should offer it at USD 1.- with 500' words only to give it a try with in-app purchase of the remaining words ...

555 I've been waiting for this one for some time now!

It's the dictionary from Benjawan Becker, who most Thai learners will know from her Thai for Beginners books.

Yeah, it's a bit expensive and hopefully the price will come down a bit in the future, but apart from that this is really a no-brainer.

Sorry, I did not try the app you mentioned but I would like to recommend Immersive Thai, which exists both as an iPhone and an iPad app. It's for absolute beginners but intelligently made and I've made big progress by playing around with this app. And it provides hours of fun with your BG when you're finished with other matters. tongue.gif

Check out their home page: http://www.wattanasoft.com/ or download it from the ITunes store. It's worth the 7.99 (euro price). I know because in a previous life I was a language teacher myself.

hi please can anyone tell me if they have ever used this iphone app and if so what did they think

much appreciated

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id411632067?mt=8

thai dict - free - free dictionary, not the greatest visually but does the job. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/thai-dict/id298444727?mt=8

I've tried a few other apps for thai...

Ankimobile - $25, but if you use anki (which you should!! heh) it's well worth the money. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ankimobile/id373493387?mt=8

Gengo - £3.50 - only tried the trial version but it's pretty slick - http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/gengo-flashcards-thai/id306265615?mt=8

Thai - £3 - avoid, so many mistakes. It was like it was made by someone just quizing a dictionary. Shame really. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/thai/id335716741?mt=8

I previously tried 'My Words - Thai' and found it of limited use...and that was before it stopped updating altogether. I already use the PC version of Talking Thai, but this is real bonus on the iPhone as I can take it around with me. Yes, it's comparatively expensive compared to most of the trivia available on the iPhone, but worth it for a serious student. It has Thai script input too, so even your BF can look up suitable words.

I have the Paiboon Talking Dictionary on both my laptop and my Ipod Touch. They were recently upgraded (free of charge) to over 100,000 words. I have a lot of Thai language materials but, in my opinion, the Talking Dictionary is my best resource. I use it almost every day. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Thai language.

There's also another "app" from Paiboon available for the Iphone and Ipod Touch. Click Here to see a description at the Itunes app store. This is excellent software study material to be used with Benjawan Poomsan Becker's "Thai for Beginners." I also recommend this, along with the "Thai for Beginners" book. The book is available at many bookstores and a description can be found Here. Note that the book can be purchased either with or without the accompanying CD. At the moment, I don't recommend getting the CD. I have it, but haven't been able to get it to run on my Windows 7 computer. I do have the "Thai for Beginners" app installed on my Ipod Touch, and it works fine, there.

I have it and it is a very useful app for hearing the correct pronunciations. I use it far more than any other Thai app now.

I use Word Power - Thai Version...I find it very useful...think it cost about $7 but came with 2000 odd words and has the Thai Spelling and the flashcard function is VERY useful.

Highly recommended.

I got about $50 worth of Itunes vouchers for Christmas....I may splurge on the $25 app....don't really know what else to spend it on.

It's a 3-way dictionary, eng-thai, thai-eng and transliterated thai-thai

It could be somewhat useful for Thai people (being able to look up english words), but it is really aimed at westerners learning thai. All the soundclips for instance are for thai words only, not for english words.

For a Thai learning english you'd probably be just as well off with one of the free Thai dicts you can find in the Appstore.

Just got the app, yes it is expensive for an iPhone app but it is very easy to use and has a huge database that is stored on your phone, so no need for an internet connection. Well laid out with some great features and worth the money in my opinion. You get what you pay for, it is quality.

A good cheap one I was using before this was iPOODTHAI, nice app at only $1.19.

Thanks for bringing this app to my attention. Happy to spend $30 on a decent app that will get used.

Another app for the serious student - Reading Thai - which is useful for recognising Thai letters, tone rules, etc. It's £2.99, which is not a great deal when you consider all those 59p games that last about a day.

A new website where I found to learn how to read is www.learnthaionline.com. The system that they use seems very clever.

I am also using Anki Mobile and am very impressed with it. More expensive than the other mobile apps but I researched them all for a couple hours and Anki seems to be worth the extra $.
