Tesco Lotus

Recommended Posts

Went and checked this place out yesterday. The supermarket is massive and about as cheap as you'll get I think in and around pattaya. So if you are here for more than 2 weeks it is worth a trip to stock up on any supplies you may need. There is also a food hall upstairs which is very cheap. There was a pizza shop there also serving up good pizza. Downstairs there is a japanese food train style restaraunt. So you can go out around lunchtime do your shopping have something to eat and head back.

The place is just south of the major intersection of Thepprasit and Sukhumvit roads and you will see a big sign saying Tesco Lotus. The baht buses run out there but only to the intersection of the two main roads so you have to walk south about 100m. To get the baht bus catch one at the corner of Thapphraya and Thepprasit roads heading out towards Sukhumvit road.

i prefer Carrefour on Pattaya Klang. The food court is hard to beat and the supermarket delivers to your place... Makes it easy for a few cases of beer, soda, water, etc

This needs a bit of updating. Carrefour on Pattaya Klang is now called Big C. I believe the Big C people bought out Carrefour a year or so ago. There are also Big C stores on Pattaya Tai (Sukhumvit end) and Sai Song (down near the Dolphin roundabout) Tesco have 2 superstores - Pattaya South & North.

I gave up haggling in markets some years ago and now buy just about everything from one of these superstore. Also you can return items within 7 days for a full refund.

To the best of my knowledge none of these superstores or supermarkets provide a home delivery service but there's no need to carry bags or anything around there are always plenty of songteaws & taxis & motorcycle taxis hanging around in the carparks. After you buy your shopping you wheel your trolly outside to the carpark and load everything into a songteaw or taxi and take it home.

Big C is also french owned, and also known as Big Shit among expats.

Carrefour is still nr.2 worldwide, nr.1 in china and becoming nr.1 in India, they did a wise move selling their assets in SE asia and leave them to the dogs.

long live carrefour and it's vast choice of farang food !

Well that's the first time I've heard Big C described that way since it opened number 1 near soi 2, number 2 sukhumvit South Pattaya and number 3 taking over from Carrefour. Never had any problems with Big C. For Carrefour I did notice a rat once behind the meat counter and another one running around the shoe section. Not seen any since Big C took over but I imagine they are still around. Your in Thailand. Forget the farang food.

Forget to mention a couple of Big C Extra experiences that others might have had.

1. With my girlfriend. She called me from Big about meeting for lunch which we'd done many times. I went to meet her but couldn't find her in all the usual places. Called her and she was waiting in Big C Extra. I didn't even know Big C Extra existed.

2. A friend over from the UK and it's his last night and we arrange to meet in Big C Extra for dinner. I made a big point of telling him it's the old Carrefour. His girlfriend picked him up and took him to Big Soi soi 2.

Big C originated in Thailand (Tizio never heard it called Big shit by any ex-pats & I know many) the merger with the French Co. Groupe Casino came in the 1997 financial crises & in 1999 the group bought shares to gain control, the headquarters of Big C are still in Bangkok

Yeah "Big Shit" is news to me too. But I used to laugh a bit when I first saw a Big C store as cancer is often refered to as the Big C. I also thought Carrefour was the best out of the big 3 superstores. Now I usually shop about 50-50 in Tesco or Big C.

Big C == Big Central == Central Group == Central Pattana == Centara hotels etc etc

it's not always easy to say who owns who.

Casino Group seems to own the bigger stake in Big C however so it's fair to say it's "french owned".

Carrefour has the best "format" of all, but they simply started operations in thailand too late when Tesco already take over.

Tesco is much more focused on low prices rathen than choice and quality.

they're two different concepts, carrefour is a fine example of frenchness, Tesco is the typical low/mid cost supermarket.

i would like to see hard discounts coming into SE asia as well ... Leader Price, Franprix, Aldi, LIDL, etc

no idea why Walmart doesn't operate in thailand, probably they realized they can't enslave their employees as in china ?

Which one out of the two sells alcohol (beer, Bourbon) cheaper? Big C or TESCO?

I'm not really sure mate as I seldom buy booze to take home, but I doubt if there's much diff between the 2. Maybe a few Bt diff, they check each other's prices out all the time and try to undercut each other. Also they both have specials, so you need to look at their advertising brochures and see what's reduced for a particular time.

Agree with that. It's located behind MacDonlad's and under the California Wow gym.
