Thanks Kevcov I have just read this thread.

:001_Thank_You5:

Excellent.

Accepting that we are digressing from this OP as a technical issue, please forgive me for taking the liberty, but I think the opinion you expressed on your duplicate thread and more particularly my response to it are more relevant here amongst related posts and opinions.

Obviously I needed to include your quote to make sense of my response to it.

As stated in the other thread there is a problem which is currently being looked into.

Thanks for the info & answer to my question.

Rep Points are very good for encouraging members to feel welcome & there effots appreciated.

IMO a great system that works.

I do not want to pick any members out but certain Friends have clearly run up each other accounts & have stupid amounts of points.

What ever system is in place Humans are always going to abuse them.

Kudos is nice & some of us like image & reputation in real life but being mad in Pattaya is one thing but childish on a forum is just sad.

Every Rep point I have given out to members has been well deserved.

........

Serpentine's explanation referred to the software update conflicts they say are causing the problem I believe, which you say you have read about on the main thread about this issue.

I stand to be corrected but it had nothing to do with Rep Point Abuse as I understood it.

As one BM whom you might include in your list of those with "stupid amounts of points" (albeit now eclipsed x4 by a certain party) I can honestly say that they have not been gained by what I call bumming.

If all points given to me by Friends were removed, the difference to my total would, I believe, be insignificant. I don't know that for certain, but I say it on the basis of a trawl through one of my more successful threads which I did for another reason.

The bumming which I was aware of was relatively low level but it went on from the start. Bagel took it to another level as a piss take and that game was stopped.

You could question some of the tactics employed since, but one thing which I think is completely wrong is Reciprocal Repping (you bum me and I'll bum you back).

We are on here for, amongst other things, fun.

Some of the games I played were fun for some people. Different strokes etc.

If you think they were "childish" and "sad" that's your view.

I have views about how some BMs post too.

Some people might take the view that continuing to bump your own duplicate thread (after it was been pointed out to you) by responding to an explanation which wasn't even given or raised here is also c..... :GoldenSmile1:

It's one you're perfectly entitled to, but why did you not post this opinion in the main thread, where it was at least relevant to what others have posted? - sorry, stupid Q.

Edits :-

PS - If you now plan to try to change this into yet another debate about Rep Point Abuse it's in the wrong forum. You may say the same about the main one, but its purpose is still for information about the board problem, albeit it has drifted.

PPS - In case you missed it, I have previously stated that if I had a vote (and exercised it) I would vote for the cessation/abandonment of the system as it now stands.

............................

I don't understand. That was your entire post minus a Thank you emoticon.

If you mean your later post in response, well you could have put that here yourself couldn't you?

Anyway, happy to oblige. :GoldenSmile1:

I started my thread & did not know there was a thread on this subject already. :GoldenSmile1:

Now Mr Edge I have to ask just what is your problem with me pointing out what most members who post here regular must know or have thoughts about.

Moving on you & your friends asked to to keep my pics to the PUI thread firstly as you all said its where they should be posted & I did. Great thread of course.

You have also in the past few weeks gone on about me Punting my threads & other slurs.

Now I am a good member who posts & shares info & has a good time on this forum & I keep to the Script & its nice to be nice.

My above comments or post by all means can be put into the other thread fine by me.

Rep points work & the proof is just look at how many normal members have started posting pics in the last few months.

Rep points work as they reward members & make them feel welcome & part of the club/Forum.

At a time when Thai girls are not into having there pics taken you want to drop the Rep point system that has encouraged members to get pics & post them here. I think your judgment is flawed.

Another point if you have a vote on this scap the Rep points system take some advice from me vote to keep it as a system that gets people on side & posting pics is well worth keeping even if it needs to be twicked.

No pics & all text can only result in a demotion for PA's.

Please address your opinions to the head Admin as I am a 11 month member & not a General or Captain here but you know my opinion on the subject.

That said I am a sexy man. HA HA. :GoldenSmile1:

Having done that for you, I suppose I have to respond briefly, but I'm not really going off on one as this has run for ages, not least in the Am I Worthy thread and I don't have much new to say.

Pui posts in her thread? - not me, another BM expressed his preference is all AFAIK.

"gone on" = this one about your duplicate thread makes twice. The other one was about endlessly punting a thread asking whether you should do a Dubai TR, which I still haven't seen.

"proof"? - I don't see it.

"welcome" - versus perceived elitism.

Rep Points have somehow increased the number of BMs taking pics of BGs? - and you say my "judgement is flawed" - OK up2u.

If there is a vote (I mean one set up by Admin not a BM's thread) I've already said how I'd vote.

I don't accept for a moment that Rep Points = pics and there is the negative side to consider anyway. PA was doing fine for pics before RPs arrived and I've no doubt it will do fine if they cease to exist. Are you saying you've posted more pics since they came?

"11 month member" - fine and, as you can see, I'm only a 7 month member - no problem there huh?

I don't need to address anything I've posted here to Admin thanks. He's a BM too and he can read it here.

DP has referred to a discussion going on between Admin' and Mods and we're having one out here. No harm or malice intended on my part - just differing views. Presumably we'll find out what, if anything, Admin decides to do with it and then move on.

From the discussion on the Thaivisa forum I gather that there are financial considerations due to advantages I hadn't considered.

Apparently, it is claimed that RPs do increase the number of hits through the loyalty factor or something, so those running the site may well consider that to be more important as it could affect advertiser revenue. I don't know anything about that argument.

I'm pleased to see you bring your PoV to where the discussion is currently going on. You are a good member who brings a lot of much appreciated stuff to the board and no doubt there will be those who agree with you, not least some of those who have worked damn hard to achieve those "stupid amounts of points". :GoldenSmile1:

What do rep points make? Prize puddings. Nothing for a pair of twats in this game. Just look what you could have won! Respect.

This is all getting a bit silly now. :Disease1:

I couldn't care less myself but others, on both sides, seem to care too much. What started out as a novel idea to encourage people to contribute more to the forum, is now a complete abortion. On the one hand, you have 'quid pro quo' & rep whoring and on the other you have people who contribute to the forum in order to increase their rep, which they wear like a badge; is that not the intended consequence?

Maybe a ban on requesting reps is in order, although it would do nothing to stop the reciprocal repping between individuals, who continually lose respect in my estimation, in direct proportion to their increasing reputation.

Peace. :GoldenSmile1:

I know what Pease Pudding is but I don't know what Prize Pudding is.

Maybe my old Mum would know, but for sure this is what she might refer to as a Bugger's Muddle.

It is indeed a good idea in theory but whatever the ingredients of a Prize Pudding might be, there are a chicken and an egg involved in this.

Whoever might be perceived as Rep Abusers today, remember that it went on covertly from the start. That was the cause and the subsequent abuse is the effect.

Not sure where I'm going with that so I'll stop there. :GoldenSmile1:

If Admin' come out with a definitive decision as to the future of RPs I promise I'll shut the fcuk up about it and concentrate on something more productive ...... like no, shhhhhh

When I joined PA a few short months ago it was great to find a forum where I could research and get advice about Pattaya. As I became more familiar with the way things work here, I began to gather that there were 3 ways in which fellow BM's expressed appreciation for the posts of other BM's.

At the base level, if what you were writing was interesting, you could watch the number of hits your OP received rising.

Next, in direct approval, BM's would post in reply to your OP.

And the final Kudo was the Rep Point, which meant that someone thought you had made a really good contribution to PA.

It also slowly dawned on me that someone having 200, 500, or even 1,000 Rep Points didn't mean they were necessarily great contributors to PA. Just that some BM's were begging or bartering Rep, for whatever reason. If that's what they choose to do, no problem, it doesn't worry me whether it's done in fun or to irritate.

Personally, I take a degree of pride when I receive a Rep Point, as to me it means I have given something meaningful enough to the forum for someone to use part of their Rep allocation on me. As many BM's will know by now, I usually write PM's personally to individuals who give me Rep to say thanks for their appreciation - the exception to this would be my recent TR, where I was surprised to receive what I considered to be a large number of points for a very mundane report - I was just too lazy send that many PM'sbiggrin.gif.

I'm sure that once the Admin/Mods have solved the current technical problem they will also make a decision about whether Rep should continue or be scrapped. If the Rep Point system is scrapped, then In the long-run it will make no difference other than to remove the 'Merit Badge' that some of us value, I don't believe the absence of Rep will stop people from posting. If Rep continues, then I will continue to recognise the valid contributors to the forum by the quality of their work, and continue to disregard excessive Rep Point totals as a meaningful guide to the value of any BM's work.

And now I'll shut up and stop thread fcuckingtongue.gif.

It's like Pease Pudding, but with the giblets left inside. Ahhh! Pease Pudding is one to add to the nostalgic list of foods I'll miss when I move to LOS, but inexplicably haven't eaten for 10 years.

...................... - the exception to this would be my recent TR, where I was surprised to receive what I considered to be a large number of points for a very mundane report..................

It isn't a mundane report at all, as witness the many complimentary posts.

I think two positives that have come out of the games have been that an awful lot more BMs have discovered the button and what it's for.

I also get the impression that more and more BMs, even the lurkers, realise that posting a well prepared and presented TR or other thread does involve a lot of work - even if it is for the purpose of playing a game.

The RP has been praised as an easy alternative for a reader who can't be bothered to post a comment. That's OK if the reader feels he has nothing of significance to say and would otherwise move on, but I think you'll agree that from the OP's PoV it's a poor substitute for a post expressing thanks or appreciation.

Add to that the fact that such posts keep the thread bobbing along in the first few pages of View New Content, thus keeping it alive and I think I know which one the big TR writers would prefer if they had to make a choice.

I suppose with bugger's muddle meaning cock-up it was inevitable that your mind would take you on that particular trip, though I doubt that's what was in my Mum's mind when she said it and I'd have preferred you hadn't made that association and placed a cloud over my innocent childhood.

System seems to be working again...

Is that it?

The option to send a message with the RP is no longer there.

Also, unless we find the repworthy post by accident, how do we know where a RP came from?

I used to look in Profile but that feature isn't showing.

The option to click on the point/s given in the post and see who gave it is still there, but unless you've only got about one thread and make very few posts how can you find who just gave you a RP?

Is there somewhere else to look that I haven't found before?

If not, is this a temporary glitch or is it new policy for us not to know too easily where RPs have come from? :Circle_Sharks:

I'm glad to read this ! I kept on searching on my profile yesterday, and came to the conclusion that this option had never existed and I might have Alzheimer's disease...

BTW, it's funny how some people can be very agressive when we talk about this rep-points...

Aren't we in an adult forum ?

I like rep-point because it shows me somebody shares my opinion, but quoting my post with a positive answer is almost the same.

Giving rep for posted pics doesn't looks very good to me.

I agree with your reason for liking RPs, if only it was that simple.

A positive answer is better than a RP (IMO) if you are the OP, as it keeps the thread alive and bubbling to the surface. It's also nicer that someone has taken the trouble to write something.

In that respect I think they were a backward step in terms of forum activity. They serve a purpose for someone who has nothing to say, but do nothing to promote further discussion - apart from lots of threads and posts about RPs of course. :GoldenSmile1:

With regard to your point about RPs for pics, you may not have noticed but some BMs only look at the pics lol. They have RPs to give too. I'm joking - likn bit.

A lot of BMs do come here for the pics though and are willing to show their appreciation to those who post them - as I've shown.

One BM's longstanding policy of demanding a certain number of positive posts before posting the next pic did generate more posts, but how many "Here's one more" or " She's hot" posts can you be bothered to read? :GoldenSmile1:

Agree with the general point, but are you aware of a (recently quiet) BM who racked up over 2000 posts in 6 months with 'thanks for the info' & 'thanks for the warning' responses? Sometimes he got confused & responded 'thanks for the warning' to a trip report!

I don't tend to respond to trip reports, for example, as I don't want to give a 'low hanging fruit' generic response; unless I can be bothered to make a witty retort, which isn't often.

Peace. :GoldenSmile1:

Yes, you're right, I was referring the BM Cheang, who has been absent for a time. Nothing against the good fella, or to single him out, but he is far & above the world record generic response holder; although he has made some great posts, in the haystack!

Well according to Laamok's explanation above, they're waiting for an upgrade.

If you're looking for a conspiracy theory, you might conclude that removing the text option and also the box in Profile which allowed you to see who had repped you, is an attempt to make reciprocal repping more difficult, as it may involve a trawl through a large number of posts and threads.

However, for a BM who has only one thread running and who derives most (all?) his points from it, that would not present a problem and indeed he marches on to the next millenium. :GoldenSmile1:

Therefore, I shall assume it's just a temporary glitch.

Perhaps

I'm always up for a conspiracy theory, followed by a destructive deconstruction. One can still see whom has repped one, at least a couple of hours ago; I've been busy since.
