From DPreview :

Canon Powershot S95 - Pros

  • Very good image quality, particularly at lower ISO settings
  • Generally well optimized JPEGs with good color response
  • High ISO performance good up to ISO 800 (and higher if processed from RAW)
  • Sharp 28-105mm (equivalent) zoom range with effective stabilization
  • Fast, responsive operation, and impressive buffer
  • Good LCD screen - bright and high-contrast
  • Exposure preview live view and accurate virtual histogram
  • Effective manual controls (including excellent Control Ring)
  • Face detection / tracking AF modes
  • Compact, very well constructed

----------------

Canon Powershot S95 - Cons

  • Tendency to underexpose when presented with large highlight areas (such as sky)
  • AWB can deliver different color rendition depending on screen composition
  • Fringing can be a problem around high-contrast edges (like foliage against a bright sky)
  • No control over noise reduction (although noise is well controlled by default)
  • Optical zoom and AF unavailable in movie mode
  • Flash underpowered (but this is far from unusual)
  • Manual focus preview too low res to be useful (and tends to give the false impression of being in focus)
  • Lack of 'proper' grip can make handling awkward (especially one-handed).
  • Relatively poor battery life

Not so bad mate, what do you think ?

Also have the S95, think it's a great camera perfect for low light situations in bars/rooms etc. No problem with the quality of the pictures.

If it floats, flies or fucks It's probably cheaper to rent ...

The depth of field effect / blurry background is not as effective as in a quality DSLR, but it is okay if up close to the subject and you choose the lowest AP setting

If it floats, flies or fucks It's probably cheaper to rent ...

Guys,

I have serious plan to buy a Canon S95 for my next trip in Patts in September, but i'm still a bit confuse because the SONY TX100V is great too.

what i want :

- nice picture in low light environment (Ibar, insomnia, discos...)

- a good flash

- good video HD movies (in low light as well)

- a pocket size who fit your jean pocket (not a size bigger than S95)

what is better than S95 with all my restrictions ?

thanks !

Honestly, with your size limtation, there isn't anything better. Even going up in size slightly there isn't anything that

(IMHO) makes enough improvements in light sensitivity or flash quality to offset the size increase.

As far as low light issues, the Sony lens is a much "darker" lens than the S95's f2.0 glass, which lets in a lot more light.

Additionally, the smaller pixels of the 16MP sensor array compared to the S95s 10MP sensor are not as light sensitive, and

therefor more prone to higher noise in low light conditions.

There's rumors that the S95 successor will be announced sometime in August. That's probably too late for your trip but just thought I'd mention it if you want to save money on the inevitable S95 price drop or wait for the newer model. The S95 is a great camera though IMO.
