That's basically what is happening at present. Everyone goes to google rather than typing in a domain so SEO matters more than the domain itself.

 

The domain name IS part of SEO!!!

 

If you want to rank for certain keywords then having those words in your domain will make a big difference with your conpetitor who doesnt have the name at all.
