Some Girls: My Life in a Harem

Jillian Lauren

A jaw-dropping story of how a girl from the suburbs ends up in a prince's harem, and emerges from the secret Xanadu both richer and wiser

At eighteen, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition. The "casting director" told her that a rich businessman in Singapore would pay pretty American girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian was on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next eighteen months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, youngest brother of the Sultan of Brunei, leaving behind her gritty East Village apartment for a Palace with rugs laced with gold and trading her band of artist friends for a coterie of backstabbing beauties.

More than just a sexy read set in an exotic land, Some Girls is also the story of how a rebellious teen found herself-and the courage to meet her birth mother and eventually adopt a baby boy.

Snow Falling on Cedars.

by David Guterson.

He saw the soft cedars of San Piedro Island, its high, rolling hills, the low mist that lay in long streamers against its beaches, the whitecaps riffling its shoreline. The moon had risen already behind the island – a quarter moon, pale and indefinite, as ethereal and translucent as the wisps of cloud that travelled the skies.

A fisherman is found dead in the net of his boat off the coast of a North American island. When a local Japanese-American man is charged with his murder, it becomes clear that what is at stake is more than one man's guilt. For on San Piedro, memories grow as thickly as cedar trees – memories of a charmed romance between a white boy and a Japanese girl.

Above all, the island is haunted by what happened to its Japanese residents during the Second World War, when an entire community was sent into exile while its neighbours watched.

The Power and the Glory.

by Graham Greene.

In the Mexican state of Tabasco in the 1930s, all vestiges of Catholicism are being outlawed by the government. As churches are razed, icons are banned, and the price of devotion is execution, an unnamed member of the clergy flees. He’s known only as the “whisky priest.” Beset by heretical vices, guilt, and an immoral past, he’s torn between self-destruction and self-preservation. Too modest to be a martyr, too stubborn to follow the law, and too craven to take a bullet, he now travels as one of the hunted—attending, in secret, to the spiritual needs of the faithful. When a peasant begs him to return to Tabasco to hear the confessions of a dying man, the whisky priest knows it’s a trap. But it’s also his duty—and possibly his salvation.

No Warriors, No Glory.

by Harold Coyle.

The nine stories that make up Isaac Asimov’s “I, Robot,” written in the 1940s, not only foresaw a day when autonomous machines would assume the more mundane and dangerous chores performed by people, they also foreshadowed problems humans would encounter as they learned not only how to use and control their robots, but how to live with them as well. The world that Asimov envisioned is here.

Today, new and more dynamic uses of robots are being explored and tested. Even the way we wage war is not immune as robotic devices of every shape and description are being tested and fielded by armed forces around the world. Remotely controlled and autonomous machines that perform reconnaissance, security, mine detection, logistical support and even combat are making their way into the Army’s order of battle. It is changing the way Americans fight. It is a change that will not come easy. Nor will it come without a price.

Nathan Dixon, a mid-career Army officer, discovers just how different the Army that he has dedicated his life to will look in the future when he is assigned the task of investigating a friendly fire incident involving a rogue unmanned ground combat vehicle, or UGV.

This is no easy task for an officer that has yet to learn how to deal with the self interests that a project such as the UGV program is capable of creating. In addition to working with the commanding officer of the unit testing the UGVs, a man determined to save his career, and dealing with the civilian contractor charged with seeing that the UGVs his company is building succeeds no matter what, Dixon must not only find out what happened but who, if anyone, was responsible for the sequence of events that caused the incident.

By Any Means: His Brand New Adventure From Wicklow to Wollongong.

by Charley Boorman.

Bikes have always been Charley's first love, but he also enjoys a challenge. So when the chance comes to travel across three continents 'by any means', he jumps right in. Grabbing whatever local transport he can get his hands on, Charley travels from his home town in County Wicklow all the way to Australia - a trip of over 20,000 miles through twenty-five countries.

Testing Charley's skills and stamina to the limit, this new journey offers him a unique opportunity to meet people and learn firsthand all about their countries. He drives a lorry through northern Iran, rides a tuk-tuk through the chaotic and colourful city of Varanasi, and becomes the first person ever to wakeboard across the Malay/Singapore border.

He sets up his own bus service in Turkey, takes a slow boat down the Mekong, and a very fast one through Borneo to deliver vaccines for UNICEF. And of course he jumps on a bike whenever he can, even if there's a monsoon on the way . . .

On the Road: Jack Kerouac.

by Jack Kerouac.

On the Road swings to the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, generosity, chill dawns and drugs, with Sal Paradise and his hero Dean Moriarty, traveller and mystic, the living epitome of Beat.
Now recognized as a modern classic, its American Dream is nearer that of Walt Whitman than Scott Fitzgerald, and it goes racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and autobiographical passion.

About the Author

Matt Carrell quit the investment industry to spend more time writing stories. "I'd mapped out this great idea for stealing a billion dollars from my company, unfortunately the CEO found the plan on my desk. I had to tell him I was writing a book or it might have been jail time!" Vortex has since become a highly acclaimed novel with an equally well received sequel.

He started his writing career with Thai Lottery and Thai Kiss - focused on the darker side of Thailand's infamous nightlife.

Blood Brothers is a story about the always newsworthy Thai police - readers attest to its authenticity and Matt still finds passport control at Bangkok airport a daunting experience in case the authorities make the connection.

Turning his hand to films - Matt has recently received an award from TopShorts Festival for Best Original Story - for the screenplay adaptation of his short - Crazy Medicine. Now available on Amazon.

Pol Pot: The History of a Nightmare

by Philip Short.

Pol Pot was an idealistic, reclusive figure with great charisma and personal charm. He initiated a revolution whose radical egalitarianism exceeded any other in history. But in the process, Cambodia desended into madness and his name became a byword for oppression. In the three-and-a-half years of his rule, more than a million people, a fifth of Cambodia's population, were executed or died from hunger and disease. A supposedly gentle, carefree land of slumbering temples and smiling peasants became a concentration camp of the mind, a slave state in which absolute obedience was enforced on the 'killing fields'. Why did it happen? How did an idealistic dream of justice and prosperity mutate into one of humanity's worst nightmares? Philip Short, the biographer of Mao, has spent four years travelling the length of Cambodia, interviewing surviving leaders of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge movement and sifting through previously closed archives. Here, the former Khmer Rouge Head of State, Pol's brother-in-law and scores of lesser figures speak for the first time at length about their beliefs and motives.

Survival in the Killing Fields.

by Haing Ngor.

Best known for his academt award-winning role as Dith Pran in "The Killing Fields", for Haing Ngor his greatest performance was not in Hollywood but in the rice paddies and labour camps of war-torn Cambodia.

Here, in his memoir of life under the Khmer Rouge, is a searing account of a country's descent into hell. His was a world of war slaves and execution squads, of senseless brutality and mind-numbing torture; where families ceased to be and only a very special love could soar above the squalor, starvation and disease.

An eyewitness account of the real killing fields by an extraordinary survivor, this book is a reminder of the horrors of war - and a testament to the enduring human spirit.

The Secret History Of Al-Qa'ida.

by Abdel-Bari Atwan.

Over the last ten years, journalist and al-Qa'ida expert Abdel Bari Atwan has cultivated uniquely well-placed sources and amassed a wealth of information about al-Qa'ida's origins, masterminds and plans for the future.

In this book, Atwan reveals how al-Qa'ida's radical departure from the classic terrorist / guerrilla blueprint has enabled it to outpace less adaptable efforts to neutralise it.

The fanaticism of its fighters, and their willingness to kill and be killed, are matched by the leadership's opportunistic recruitment strategies and sophisticated understanding of psychology, media and new technology - including the use of the Internet for training, support and communications.

Tango 190: The Gateshead Shootings and the Hunt for Raoul Moat: Raoul Moat, the Gateshead Shootings and Life without My Eyes.

by PC David Rathband.
On 1 July 2010, Raoul Moat was released from Durham Prison. Within forty-eight hours he had shot his ex-partner Samantha Stobbart and brutally murdered her new boyfriend, Chris Brown. In the early hours of 4 July Police Constable David Rathband was gunned down while sitting in his patrol car in East Denton, just outside Newcastle upon Tyne.
PC Rathband was blinded for life and one of the biggest manhunts in police history began, culminating in Moat s death six days later in the small Northumberland town of Rothbury. For the first time, this is PC David Rathband s story in his own words...
The extraordinary events that followed PC Rathband s shooting, as police tracked Moat through towns and countryside, dominated the headlines and became one of the biggest and most controversial news stories of recent times.
Often bordering on the ridiculous, it featured unexpected cameos from TV survival expert Ray Mears and former England footballer Paul Gascoigne. It ended with a stand-off between Moat and armed police on the banks of the River Coquet in Rothbury. In the middle of it all was PC David Rathband, a dignified presence throughout.
Tango 190 is his personal account of the attack and the events surrounding it. It is also the story of his physical recuperation and the gradual and courageous attempt to rebuild his life, with the help of his family, in the wake of terrible injuries sustained in the line of duty.
PC David Rathband s courage, fortitude and good humour in the light of his horrifying ordeal are extraordinary. This book tells David s own story, and it is truly a remarkable one.
The story becomes even more poignant in the light of PC Rathband s death and his ultimate failure to recover mentally from what had happened to him, despite his heroic efforts.
