Dengue Fever Outbreak

There is a really good mosquito repellant spray/roll-on/liquid sold in most of the Pattaya pharmacies. I apologize for not remembering the name but if you read the label (yes this one is not all thai characters), it is made in Belgium that comes in a white and green bottle. It works really well and contains Deet. Or if you prefer to buy your mosquito repellant before you leave, just stop by any sporting goods/camping store and they carry a multitude of products.

One other thing that has helped me a lot when I travel is taking garlic capsules at least 2 weeks before leaving. Don't laugh it helps.

Any of the Home-spun repellents have in the end to be taken with a pinch of salt - all that can be determined is that the person recommening them believed that they weren't bitten by mozzies when they took the substance - this of course is not a scientific test and could be due to any number of outside factors that the person has overlooked.

Dengue Fever is serious you really dont want to get it I know a well known Gogo owner that contracted it in Pattaya a few years back he told me it took him about 6 months to fully recover and yes it can be fatal.

There are several vaccines for Dengue Fever currently undergoing trails whether they prove to be effective, safe or get approval is however another matter altogether.

The best line of defense is prevention try to avoid getting bitten especially in the daytime (it's the daytime ones that carry Dengue) although you are more likely to get bitten in the evening or at night best bet is to wear an all over condom use a mosquito repellant containing DEET.

After saying all that I really wouldn't worry to much although they are most definatly here mosquitos are not that much of a problem in Pattaya although a quick squirt of mosquito repellant before you go out is not a bad idea.
