I use my Thai phone if I need to make a quick call back to the US.

However a few of my calls lasted 30 to 40 minutes because of work and several text back and forth. 

Last trip in December I only had to use my Verizon on only 2 times for 24 hours period, so the $20 total for the trip wasn't to bad. 

A few times I use Skype and LINE ID which help keep the cost down

Yep! Downloaded the Skype App to my iPhone and use it via hotel wifi to call back to the USA cheaply. 

I now forget how I did it, but I set it up so that caller id shows as my mobile phone number when I call via Skype.

You can set the call id number to display under the caller identification settings.
