Latest from Cathay Pacific

Last updated: 30 November 2008 22:10 HKT

CATHAY PACIFIC TO MOUNT SPECIAL FLIGHTS FOR TRAVELLERS STRANDED IN THAILAND AS SCHEDULED SERVICES TO AND FROM BANGKOK REMAIN CANCELLED.

Cathay Pacific will mount special flights on 01 and 02 December to Utapao Airport, south of Bangkok, to bring travellers stranded in Thailand back to Hong Kong. Scheduled services to and from Bangkok on 01 December are cancelled.

The airline is sending a 385-seat capacity Boeing 777-300 from Hong Kong International airport in the morning at 09.30 Hong Kong time with scheduled arrival time at Utapao at 11.30 local time to pick up passengers. The return flight is scheduled to depart from Utapao at 13.30 local time and arrive Hong Kong at 17.30 Hong Kong time.

The flight today is the third special flight the airline has mounted in three days to help passengers stranded by the closure of Bangkoks two major airports.

A Cathay Pacific spokesman said: We are trying our very best in very difficult circumstances to bring home as many people as we can, and we will certainly try to do more if conditions in Thailand allow us to do so.

The spokesman reminded passengers that facilities at Utapao Airport, a military airstrip, were severely limited.

Cathay Pacific appealed to passengers to be patient and understanding as staff at the airport were working under very difficult conditions in manually processing ticketing and boarding. Staff have also been working around the clock to cope with the situation.

The spokesman said that because of the limitations at the airport, passengers were strongly advised not to bring check-in luggage. Such luggage may need to be transferred to Phuket for later onward transmission back to Hong Kong, he added.

The spokesman said that Cathay Pacific had applied for further special flights to the same airport on Tuesday, depending on demand, regulatory approval and local circumstances. The airline has brought back to Hong Kong almost 800 passengers on its two special flights in the past two days.

Scheduled services to and from Bangkok remain cancelled. The airline advises passengers that its In-Town Check-In and Online Check-In services are suspended today for all flights to and from Bangkok until 02 December.

Passengers are advised to check the latest flight information with the Flight Status box on the right before departing for the airport. Passengers can also subscribe to the notiFLY flight paging service to get the latest flight status via text messaging (SMS) or email.

The situation remains volatile and Cathay Pacific will continue to advise on flights that are affected. The airline will continue to work on alternative flight arrangements for passengers from affected flights. When services resume, passengers are requested not to turn up at the airport unless they have confirmed bookings.

EVA Air

This web page was updated at 14:05, DEC 01 (Taipei time) / 06:05, DEC 01 (GMT)

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is still closed, so EVA Air changes flight schedule to Bangkok and Europe. EVA Air temporarily take Utapao Airport for the operation for flights to and from and via Bangkok.

Utapao is located approximately 140 kilometres and south from Bangkok. However, facilities at Utapao are very basic and the airport is heavily congested, we apologise in advance for the inconvenience, but ask for your understanding that the airport at Utapao is originally designed for military purpose.

Before you go to Utapao Aiport, please pay attention to the following directions.

1. Thai government ask for all airlines to rearrange check-in counter service at Bangkok Inter-

national Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC). Therefore, EVA Air will proceed check-in and

baggage service at BITEC from Dec 01, 2008. In other words, there is no more check-in

counter at Utapao Airport from Dec 01, 2008.

When customers arrive at BITEC, please go to Entrance 1 that located at 1F and please follow

the Airline check-in direction to EVA Air's check-in counter and proceed check-in service.

Please refer to below links for the map of BITEC.

Link1: The direction from taking Bangkok Transit System(BTS) to BITEC。Please note that it

takes about 1 hour from BTS On Nut Station to BITEC by taxi.

Link2: The direction from city center to BITEC by driving.

2. It takes two and half hours from BITEC to Utapao Airport, therefore EVA Air strongly advise all

customers shall check in at BITEC before six hours from estimated departure time and finish

all the check-in business before four hours from estimated departure time. Please take Thai

Governmental shuttle bus to Utapao Airport for boarding when you finish check-in business.

3. For passengers who had arrived Utapao Airport now, EVA Air still accept your check-in and

baggage service requirement.

4. Reservations in Taiwan :(02)25011999、(04)23299566、(07)7959301

Here is a list of Airports in Thailand

I think they are planning to try and use all the ones with International written next to them. As today they started taking planes out of the closed airport to use elsewhere.

CATHAY PACIFIC TO MOUNT SPECIAL FLIGHTS FOR TRAVELLERS STRANDED IN THAILAND AS SCHEDULED SERVICES TO AND FROM BANGKOK REMAIN CANCELLED.

Cathay Pacific will mount special flights on 2 December to Utapao Airport, south of Bangkok, to bring travellers stranded in Thailand back to Hong Kong. Scheduled services to and from Bangkok on 2 December are cancelled.

A Cathay Pacific spokesman said: We are trying our very best in very difficult circumstances to bring home as many people as we can, and we will certainly try to do more if conditions in Thailand allow us to do so.

Special Updates Last updated: 1 December 2008 23:30 HKT

CATHAY PACIFIC TAKES GOVERNMENT CHARTER TO THAILAND; ANNOUNCES MORE SPECIAL FLIGHTS FOR STRANDED TRAVELLERS. SERVICES TO AND FROM BANGKOK REMAIN CANCELLED.

Cathay

Pacific operated a charter flight for the Hong Kong Government this afternoon to Utapao Airport, south of Bangkok, along with its own special daily flight, to help bring Hong Kong residents and passengers stranded in Thailand back to Hong Kong. Services to and from Bangkok remain cancelled until 05 December with the exception of CX703 and CX709 on 05 December.

The airline also announced that it will continue with its special flights to Utapao Airport on a daily basis this week until Friday in a bid to help clear the backlog of stranded passengers.

The airline sent a 385-seat capacity Boeing 777-300 chartered by the Hong Kong Government from Hong Kong International airport this afternoon at 16.38 Hong Kong time (flight number: 8759). The return flight (8758) is scheduled to depart from Utapao at 20.30 local time and return to Hong Kong at 00.20 Hong Kong time tomorrow morning.

Cathay Pacific also flew a special service to Utapao this morning to pick up stranded travellers. The return flight arrived to the Hong Kong International Airport at 16.21 with 357 passengers on board.

Tomorrows special Cathay Pacific flight is also operated by a 385-seat capacity Boeing 777-300. It will leave Hong Kong at 10.00 Hong Kong time with scheduled arrival time at Utapao at 12-noon local time. The return flight is scheduled to depart from Utapao at 13.00 local time, arriving in Hong Kong at 17.00 Hong Kong time.

We will continue to provide as much assistance as possible to the Hong Kong Government to bring home as many Hong Kong residents as we can, using our own flights and those chartered by the government, a Cathay Pacific spokesman said.

As of today (1 December), Cathay Pacific has mounted 4 special flights to Utapao to help bring more than 1,500 travellers back to Hong Kong.

The spokesman reminded passengers that the limited facilities at Utapao Airport, a military airstrip, were being severely tested as the airport was crowded with thousands of passengers seeking to get home to all parts of the world.

With only six check-in counters overall, and usually only one available to Cathay Pacific customers, he appealed to passengers to be patient and understanding as staff at the airport were working under very difficult conditions in manually processing ticketing and boarding so many passengers.

The spokesman said that because of the severe limitations at the airport, passengers were strongly advised not to bring check-in luggage. Such luggage may need to be transferred to Phuket for later onward transmission back to Hong Kong, he added.

The airline advises passengers that its In-Town Check-In and Online Check-In services are suspended today for all flights to and from Bangkok until 05 December.

I arrived at Utapao from Sydney on Sunday night. It was a bit chaotic but I was through immigration in no time and it took about 10 minutes to get my bag and got a taxi straight away, All in all I was impressed, The Thais can be pretty good when they put their mind to it. If your overseas and scheduled into Utapao, I wouldn't worry.

Why is it that any country with "Democratic" in it's title, Isn't

Great info. I was looking at going in mid december, but I think now in January. I think hotel rates may drop some, when they find the high season ends up being a flop. Is there anybody out there flying on North Worst back to the US. I don't hear of any planes going into help out.
