Mouse freezes when PC wakes from sleep

Hoping someone will be able to help me with this.

I have a PC running Windows 7 Professional.

I've had the PC 3 or 4 years with no problems.

I use it very little now as I use the iPad for most things.

I switch the PC on every morning and off every evening.

I've got the settings so it sleeps after a period of unuse and the monitor also goes to sleep.

In the last week or so when I wake the PC - I've always just tapped the spacebar to do this - the mouse doesn't work. I can see the pointer but it doesn't move when I move the mouse.

I'm having to restart or shutdown the PC by pressing one of the buttons on the front of the PC.

After restarting the mouse works fine.

I've got up to date Norton antivirus and the scan is clear.

Any suggestions please?

(PS I won't try any solutions until tomorrow as the PC is off now and I'm halfway through a bottle of Tempranillo:-)

Edit: obviously, I can change the settings so the computer doesn't sleep but would prefer another option.

You are sure your system was not automatically upgraded to Windows 10, correct? That is exactly the type of complaint people have been having after the upgrade, input/output inconsistencies.

Have you considered removing the mouse driver and reinstalling it? A driver is software, specifically written to make a piece of hardware work. Right now, the sleep function is dominating the mouse. Reinstalling the driver might reverse that order.

In order:

Plug the keyboard into the usb socket being used by the mouse...after unplugging the mouse of course.

Then.

Plug the mouse into the vacant usb socket previously used by the keyboard.

You can just unplug it and plug it back in again instead of rebooting, however ..

- Go to Control Panel

- Open Device Manager

- Locate the line which reads Mice and other pointing devices

- Right-click the Mouse driver (mine reads as 'HID compliant mouse'), then click Uninstall

Unplug the mouse, wait a moment, then plug it back in again. It will find it and re-install the drivers.

Thanks for suggestions.

I've refused the Win 10 Upgrade - despite Microsoft trying to get me to do it. IF they've upgraded my anyway, it will hasten my complete conversion to Apple and I'll be buying an iMac tomorrow!

I've already decided to make the switch when this PC dies after the disasters of Win 8 and Win 10!

BTW can I remove the Win 10 prompts I mistakingly allowed to be downloaded?

I'll try the other stuff tomorrow - when rather more sober.

Does the PC need to be off for me to switch the USBs?

scan your system for virus while your at it

I ran a scan with up to date Norton yesterday.

My solution is better so why would I be insecure?

That's a question for you.....

I preferred XP when you could put the computer on 'Standby".

You could try this: GWX Stopper

No need to turn it off.

I think there are a few stores that sell a hammer you can hit it with, if one hammer doesnt work try a whole bag of them

When the computer wakes from sleep, it should send a small electrical impulse and wake the mouse as well.

If that doesn't work, try placing a small piece of cheese about 1.5 cm from the mouse. Peanut butter works just as well.

Control_Panel --> Power_Options --> USB_Settings -- USB selective suspend setting : Disabled.

look under USB hub there too, turn off all USB power management and your problem is resolved

We don't know what is causing the issue yet lol.

There are plenty of things to try and rule out before manually changing the windows config.

Oops.

Sorry guys, should have realised that I'm not using a USB mouse.

I did on my last machine but this one had fewer ports so had to go back to the 'old' connection.

I'm afraid that rules out most of the solutions offered so far.

I've tried the 'uninstall' from Device Manager but doesn't seem to have solved the issue.

try the bag of hammers almost always works

I had the mouse here from a previous PC. I also have a USB mouse here.

My problem was there are not enough USB ports on the back of this PC.

I didn't really want to use one of the front ones for the mouse.

I've not had a problem until about a week ago. Odd that it should suddenly start doing this!
