Deli Diner, side of Tukcom

Recommended Posts

Excellent report as usual Evil. You definitely put your mph where your money is.

Fuck, how can ya beat that for 400 baht.

No doubt there will someone along soon to tell me exactly how.

Yup, the Deli Diner should be a hit if it can continue to serve food of that quality at those prices. However, inconsistency has always been the hobgoblin of small restaurants in Pattaya.  If Deli Diner can clear that hurdle,  it will be very popular indeed.

Just had 99 baht full English brekkie... incredible value for money in a nice peaceful setting...

I asked for poach eggs, but received scrambled... no problem as scrambled eggs were cooked just to my liking...

I dont see how they offer this at such a low price because all of the ingredients were actually quality. and not some slop other cafes throw on the plate.... extensive menu here and friendly service staff.... I didnt see any fruit shakes on the menu though??

Great review Evil!

Might pop down there for brekky when i land on June 1.

Just wondering what the coffee is like. I usually go to the coffee club or bake and brew for a good capuccino!

I'll have to pop in for the breakfast tomorrow. That looks like a very good deal.

Although I have to agree that Deli Diner seems to be an odd name for the place.

I tried two Thai dishes there.

Chicken Massaman with yellow rice. It was pretty good but too sweet.

Also had a glass noodle shrimp in a pot ordered off the menu. Not great but to be fair it wasn't even on their menu and it was cool of them to cook it anyway.

I'd probably go back. English brekkies aren't my thing.

The breakfast was very good quality very pleased will try next time dinner. For comparison tired the retox. Full English the day earlier no comparison. Nice touch fried onions and mushrooms. Pure OJ with pulp no ice filler.

Thanks for the review.

Jumping from the ground floor is more commonly known as tripping.

There's not much point in commenting on a restaurant unless you've eaten there, so I put my money and my mouth in the same place and had the four-course special Monday night at the Deli Diner.  It was a very good deal at 299 baht for salad, soup, main course and dessert. You had a choice of several different options in all the "categories" except the salad.  A bottle of Singha cost 60 baht.  With my customary tip, the total cost was 400 baht.

I liked the special a lot.  The ingredients were fresh and the dishes were well-prepared and tasty. The individual portions weren't particularly large, but taken as a whole, they yielded a satisfying meal. What more can you ask for 400 baht?

The name "Deli Diner" is a curious choice, as there's nothing deli- or diner-ish about it, at least in the U.S. sense of those words. I'd call it a small bistro that serves "international" and Thai dishes at modest prices.  It has an indoor section and a couple of outside tables.  There are apparently two more tables on a balcony reached by a spiral staircase.

I like the fact that you can look into the kitchen, but the view isn't unencumbered. The two chefs I saw were both Thai.

The menu isn't  large, but it does include a number of Western and Thai dishes.  There's plenty of choice for both farang males and their Thai companions. Prices are modest.

The first course was salad.

post-6485-0-36417900-1458607202.jpg

To call  it Caesar Salad was a bit optimistic, but it was in the right direction with crisp, fresh lettuce; homemade croutons; shaved Parmesan and a nice dressing. I ate it to the last morsel, which I seldom do with starter salads.

A small cup of corn soup was up next.  Boiled corn kernels had been pureed with stock, which resulted in a velvety texture and distinct corn taste.  It wasn't cream of corn soup nor corn chowder, but quite simply, corn soup served with toast and butter.

post-6485-0-85955100-1458610490.jpg

The parsley added a great flavor accent to the mild soup and I wish there had been more of it.

post-6485-0-14693100-1458610522.jpg

The baked salmon with butter almond sauce came as soon as I finished the soup.

post-6485-0-78864600-1458610622.jpg

Salmon is a delicately flavored fish that doesn't require much in the way of enhancement, so butter almond sauce is good choice.  Unfortunately, the sauce was the biggest miss of the meal.  It tasted like a bland bechamel to me.  Either they had run out of butter almond sauce and substituted another sauce  without telling me or the chef and I have very  different ideas about how butter almond sauce should taste.

post-6485-0-04948400-1458610704.jpg

Anyway, the salmon itself was baked properly but perhaps slightly dry.  The vegetables and potatoes were excellent, not the tasteless and waterlogged variations one gets so often in Pattaya.

Freshness seems to be a major factor at Deli Diner.  The food tastes good because it's both fresh and cooked properly.

I finished the meal with panna cotta with strawberry sauce.  I had actually wanted the creme caramel, but the waitress told me the last one had "broken apart."  I don't know if that meant she'd dropped it on the floor or something else had gone wrong with it, but the terra cotta was fine as a substitute.

The texture and flavor were very good and the strawberry sauce wasn't too sweet.  Few Italian restaurants in Pattaya do panna cotta that well.

post-6485-0-60854200-1458612268.jpg

Bottom line: I was happy with my meal at Deli Diner, especially considering the price.  There was a miss with the sauce for the salmon, but that won't deter me from returning. Right now Deli Diner is open between 10.30 am and 10.00 pm, but a note on the menu says it will open from 7.30 am beginning in April.

I’ve to agree with Evil as to the name: neither (American) Deli, nor (American) Diner.

Last night I’ve been to Deli Diner off Pattayatai in the soi right of the Tukcom building.
The business appears to be run by two Thai females, assisted by two primary-school girls.
I surmise there is a non-Thai in the background.
They open “07.30-22.01” and are closed on Mondays.
On the ground floor everything is primitive and makeshift.
The bench seating is all but comfortable.
The upper floors are completely unfinished.
For the toilets you first have to climb the uncomfortable spiral staircase to the first floor (mezzanine) and then another staircase to the second floor.
I ordered a still water, their “Mushroom Soup” and their “Baked Salmon with butter almond cream sauce”.
The mushroom cream soup had a strange brown colour.
It was accompanied by some pieces of toast made of the kind of “bread” sold at 7/11 and a small portion of unsalted Allowrie butter.
The salmon was baked on the skin and still raw inside, probably not thawed correctly.
It went with boiled potatoes and stir-fried vegetables and some thick white sauce with some sliced almonds and parsley on it.
Half an hour after leaving I got the runs and had to run for a toilet.
It was indeed cheap (313 baht all in), but I’m not going back in a hurry.

Interesting.

I haven't been inspired to even try their Western food based on the pictures here and don't really understand the enthusiasm for it.

For similar price or less you can go to Bite Me.

Like I said I thought their Thai food was OK and a fair value but I wouldn't go out of my way for that either.

Exception the English breakfast which does seem a good deal for those who want to eat stuff like that.

I had the English breakfast there last week. The juice glass had plenty of juice in, but one ice cube would have been a nice addition. I didnt really like the sausages and there was no black pudding, but apart from that it was very similar to breakfast at Retox.

But parking near DeliDiner is very tedious so since then I've been going to Retox instead.

I have never been so confused by a vegetarian section in a menu. Everything had ham or some other type of meat in it.

Not a bad breakfast, but I can't see myself trekking into Pattaya just for it on a semi-regular basis.

I am one of those people who can't eat big meals - and I enjoy a Salad from time to time.

Two Great places I go to for a Salad are "The Beer Garden or Pitinis " - But both of those salads in those places are HUGE - which puts me off of going back.

Yesterday I tried the Chicken Salad at "The Deli / Diner" and was very impressed - Perfect Size for me - Lovely Fresh Taste. 89 Baht.

I've eaten there about 16 times and every meal has been perfect.

I'm back there today for a Ganglaly Guy - which isn't on the menu - but they can do it - again Perfect.
