IMO get a non smart phone to take out with you at night that wont hurt financially if lost or stolen with a Thai pay as you go SIM.

Yeap, thats my plan.  I bought a nice cheap unlock Motorola Smartphone for less than $50 on amazon.  I will get that 1-2 SIM card unless someone advises against it.

I always buy a thai sim in bkk airport (stand close to the airport exit, stand of TRUEMOVE). I also just use my regular phone, you ofcourse need to be careful with it. Once in the room I put my phone in the safe and while out I just pay attention to my stuff like I do with my money and cards :-)
