A key mistake people make is not cleaning up all the leftover data in Windows that can still have thumbnails of images, copies of filenames accessed, etc.

Check out a utility like

And beware any SSD or flash drives because you can't truly "delete" data.

Security issues are a problem with Solid State Drives (SSDs) because hard-drive data removal techniques might not work.

1)

encryption: none (I have no need to hide my data)

cloud: over my dead body

2)

there are no good cloud services - and if there really were some, they couldn't prove that they are good.

3)

first mistake is to use a cloud service.

if you really cannot avoid transferring data, then rather encrypt the files locally first, then use a VPN to your own computer at home.

- encrypt twice in a row using RAR, ZIP, 7zip, etc. and use long passwords on both compressions. double encryption is a tough nut to crack.

- use a good router at home that stays on 24h and configure it as a VPN server. you can use wake on LAN to wake up a PC that you previously set up as a fileserver. Windows has a built-in VPN client.

Thank you brothers mandrake  and SmellyFarang for your advice...

*1) are there vpn's with phone numbers? do they exist ? I see email only or chat rooms no emails i wonder why???

2) what are the best vpn companies can you give me three

3) what are some bad vpns??

4) what makes a good vpn vs a bad vpn???

5) what do i have to purchase???

6) If you take out the external hard-drive is there still info on the computer? are there 2 drives??

7) what else should i know besides vpn, double encrypt, erase history, don't use cloud.....

The below links probably have all the information you need to know: 1) Online (ie cloud) storage with encryption. 2) Encrypt yourself, then upload to online storage (dropbox, etc) or use encrypted online storage but encrypt files yourself first, just to be safe. 3) VPN. Why do you need this? Are you _sure_ certain entities don't have back door access to whatever VPN you choose? If you are doing something you know you shouldn't, disregard this post. :P

I use dropbox which automatically syncs files, mostly photos with my phone, PC and online storage.

I'm sure my VPN is safe because it is my own VPN server (not a third party service) and it connects to a machine I own and installed, configured myself.

Useful links thanks. I'll be uploading jpg copies of the images I take to my own cloud account, but I will still have raw images on my laptop which I will want to keep to edit later. Not surprisingly I am hoping this will feature a lot of naked Thai ladies  :)

If I encrypt them on my laptop so they are entirely hidden from display, will this be enough if I am unlucky enough to be stopped and have my laptop content reviewed by the BiB or customs? I'm very aware I want to take absolutely no chances with anything that can be consoidered porn and hence illegal on my machine but equally I will want to edit pics whilst I'm out there.

Don't forget dropbox still leaves a local copy of the file on your phone and laptop. something to be aware of if your images could be considered as porn

check out http://encrypt-away.com for an eye opener.  I use drivecrypt that is mentioned on the site.  I have also used the older copies of truecrypt and think it is safe if you read the audit info.  I would never trust a cloud provider's encryption ... I would always encrypt locally and push the encrypted data to the cloud so that they never have access.

Yes, but not if you are unlucky enough to have your computer seized by US upon entry.  They might not get your pictures, but they will know you have encrypted data ... which may create problems for you.

GtotheM- A lot of people use to use dropbox back in the days but not anymore.....a lot of computer security professionals  don't like dropbox anymore.....

traveling man = the link was insightful on different levels but not complete....

i wonder if its better to

a) erase the encryption program from your computer all together???

b)  to just give them the password to the encryption ??

c) or not to give them the password of the computer?????

4) or other when traveling

*** still debating which is better vpn, cloud (out of the country), encrypted email?? or other???Tier 4 storage????? OpenVPN??? Smart DNS???Multi-Tunneling?????<--brain hurts :(....

Either iCloud Drive (all is point to point encrypted, no back doors), or a homebrewn solution called 'OwnCloud'.

OwnCloud is Mac/PC compatible,,comes with clients for Mac / PC / iPhones / Android. You set it up on your own server, install an encryption certificate, and you're good to go, and it's all under your control.

I maintain all confidential materials for myself and my clients on such a setup.

Then if you are in the UK, you have even bigger problems ...

Your government REQUIRES that you submit your encryption passkey upon their request.  It is a crime to refuse.

If the government wants to get into the files in your computer, they will; encryption or no encryption.

If your device is examined on return to the US and encrypted files are found, if you don't provide access to those, the least that can happen is your device may be confiscated. This is a lose for you.

Last time I traveled and needed personal files secure from potential prying eyes I encrypted them with open source software and stored them online. You can use Dropbox or whatever. Problem solved.

And your point is?

Better to use NO protection?  I would never want to find myself arguing about the age of an Asian girl on my computer.

You are going to die anyway, why stop at the red lights?

Wills aren't worth the paper they are written on.

No such thing as a valid pre-nup.

All Thai girls are liars and cheaters.

only if they put a lot of resources on it, I mean at least one highly skilled specialist plus hours supercomputer resources (very expensive). even the FBI doesn't have that kind of resources and they are reserved to high profile cases only.

We are talking about protection from automated sniffing in communications and cloud file storage.

My point is that go ahead and encrypt your files, I could not care either way.  If you bring your laptop into the U.S. and do not allow customs to see the encrypted files, they are going to take the computer and you may or may not be able to get it back.  They will ship it off to the whiz kids at the NSA and they will get into it.  Most countries could care less about porn or naked girls as long as they are over 18.
