Complete destruction of the Pattaya's beach !

The problem with the flooding starts at the top of the hill on the Darkside.  Water comes downhill from there and needs to be controlled before the Sukhumvit and again at every opertunity on its way down towards the sea.  If interceptor drains are put in and the water diverted into the sea via drains and not allowed to build up in volume and force, it would be much better for beach side Pattaya.  Soi Buakau is a disgrace with many drains filled in and many obviously blocked by the way that water actually comes up from them and not running away as it is supposed to do when it rains.  So to clean out all the drains would be a start.  The authorities keep saying that they have done this but from what I have seen they haven`t done it very well.

I just hope all the 1000's and 1000's of Beach Road rats are ok.

Great thread. There are some major engineering issues at the beach. Over Xmas / NY the whole place  was frequently blanketed in a niff of raw sewage.

I posted some 'before & after' photos of the 2013 remaking of BR here - http://www.pattaya-addicts.com/forum/topic/194718-beach-road-work-before-after-photos/

General point was they had damaged the character and experience of the place in that job. With so many expats and tourists in Pattaya they should be ensuring that the beachfront is a nice pedestrian-friendly area where people can come and relax with a minimum of traffic and fumes.

All these disney attractions like Nongnooch-Million-Years-Underwater-Park are fine but at the end of the day what people want in cities is good quality public space to go and hang out and people watch. Pattaya has the bones of it with the beautiful long seafront crescent of Beach Road and it was attractive and successful as a public space with a tropical feel before the 2013 job.

Ok Daveo says earlier in the thread let them do it their way but it's a shame to see it squandered.

Have to laugh at some of the if only they had used UK engineers instead of useless Thais to sort out their flooding issues type comments.

The UK doesn't get anywhere near the levels of rainfall that Thailand gets.....yet they still have major flooding issues.

All too often new houses have been and are being built on flood plains, or in areas of former mines or mills / heavy industry (even old reservoirs that were sold off) near rivers to regenerate the area, but then they do not spend any money on river walls or dredging or upgrading drainage or any other infrastructure to compensate for the problems that are likely to occur.

Added to this is the housing shortage and the refusal to free up appropriate greenland, an increase in heavy storms / flash floods (global warming?) and you see it is nothing to do with our engineers quality at all.

WW1 trench systems either side of pattaya klang now enlarged.................this does come with the caveat that this area is now clear of umbrellas and before the traders would start to sort out the mess at 06 30 following a storm so it never looked as bad as this

I come from a construction and real estate development background and the infrastructure in Pattaya is a joke.  This is what happens when you have a city without a comprehensive development plan.  What they should have done was imposed fees on the developers of all of the projects in the city to upgrade the infrastructure as all of the development was taking place.  That is what is done in the United States.  At some point they will need to impose property taxes to raise the money to fix the infrastructure here and it all needs to be redone and it is going to cost a fortune to fix.

why would the city officials do a proper job when know doubt they have an interest in the construction company, usually owned by a family member  do it cheap more money for them, get high price from City council because the brother inlaw signs off the budget  and lots repeat business in years to come when it starts falling apart .... makes perfect sense :SoWhat1:

A big part of the problem is that the sea wall is not properly constructed, nor is it deep enough.  As a result the wall is being undermined by the waves and tides, which is turn wash out the base under to walkway on top. This is particularly evident on the north part of Beach Road.

They seem to waste hundreds of millions of baht without compunction.

And why don't the brainiacs put concrete blocks in the ocean to reduce the impact of tidal surges that strip the beach of sand?

"If it feels good, just keep doing it!"

Is it the tide that washes away the sand or the flood of rainwater that flows from the sois every huge downpour?

The tides don't seem to disturb beaches in other parts of the world that I have seen, It's more the flood water from the storms trying to cut a channel to the low point which is the beach.

The tides can move vast amounts of sand on beaches, it has happened on many in the UK.  In Pattaya the most of the damage has been done by the rainwater run off from the land. They need to direct the water through pipes on the sea bed a long way out into the bay.  The more they can intercept before it reaches Beach road the better but I have seen little evidence of this happening.
