Will the police chase you if you don't stop your scooter for them?

Personally I don't turn my head and acknowledge them. That way if they do follow me I can just be very apologetic and say I'm sorry I didn't notice U. In all my times doing it ( hard to say how many times maybe 10) I've been chased and caught once. Followed me right back to April Suites. Tried to pay him off there and then but ended up hsving to go to police station and wasn't even allowed to drive my bike there! The scandal!

Apparently the doctor looking after this guy has stated that this guy has a gun shot wound to the head (which the police are denying exists). A forensic pathologist (Pornthip Rojanasunand) is to investigate.

Hopefully Pornthip Rojanasunand will come to the conclusion that it was a misquito bite. With a bit of advice from the B.I.B.

Is there any truth to the police shooting at you for a simple traffic stop run. Or are you talking out of your ass.

I own and shoot guns and the last thing I want to do is shoot at a moving target as I will surely miss and hit someone else.

For a 400 baht ticket without any other cause like robbery or something I'm calling you out on full of shit unless you can prove me wrong.

So you were proved wrong but no apologize for being a DS. Enjoy backpacking.

I believe Khun Pornthip and the Thai police rarely see eye to eye.

I did not know her name, I did not know her name but I sure did love the way she laughed and called me honey.

They may not chase you, however there may be another police stoppage point ahead, they will radio to them and tell them to look for you.

Hi. Yes it's what I witnessed too.

They will not chase you without a strong reason, so not for just running a small police checkpoint.

I once saw a farang without helmet run the night checkpoint at Soi Buakhao and Soi 15.

A policemen must have call some others because 2 of them where clearly waiting for him

about 100 m before where Soi Buakhao reaches South Road. He had to stop then. Don't know what happened after...

Surely a very bad idea to run the big checkpoints on Sukhumvit though, those where military help/support policemen.

They are not looking for your lake of license but for serious traffics, like drugs/narcotics...

Here they would certainly chase you, and you can be sure military will wait for you at next intersection !

According to the Bangkok Post the officer who shot the man has been charged with murder. There was a demonstration at the Channel 3 offices on Rama IV in Bangkok and a demonstration at a bridge in Chonburi. It is worth noting that the government allowed these demonstrations.

I had a lone officer try to flag us down and then jump on his bike and chase us when my TGF was driving. He asked her why she didn't stop and then gave her a ticket because we weren't wearing helmets. So they will chase in some cases. He probably thought I was going to offer a bribe. She has family at the police station who just cancel the ticket and give her license back anyway.

Thousands of angry bikers were protesting in front of a police station in response to a slain 40-year-old biker who was shot in the head by the police. Sriracha police claimed that the man died from the wound of the head after falling off his motorcycle while trying to escape from road checkpoint. However, doctor at a private hospital in Sriracha, Phyathai Sriracha, issued death certificate for slain biker saying he died of a gunshot wound to his head.

Just to save confusion this is the same case as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Please don't tell me that the police are claiming that the shot was fired into the air and just happened to hit the rider...lol

In Phuket enough riders sans helmet, and or licence obligingly stop to pay the fee for the police not to bother with the majority, who do not bother. Always helmeted and licenced, these days I usually give them a wave and carry on. Why waste their time and mine?

In Hua Hin they seem more insistent that riders do stop to exchange pleasantries. In time folks might start getting bored with that idea.

Dunno about other places, but with the queues I saw in Pattaya last time i was there, suggests that folks (foreigners, at least) there do have time to waste on such inane activities.

In Samui practically nobody wears helmet on bike but occasionally the BIB have checkpoints in Chaweng and Nathon and you hand over your 400baht.

The licence thing not really questioned whereas in Patts & Hua Hin as we know is "big business"

Stopped in Lamai couple of times where they were checking for drugs (no helmet but not an issue in Lamai)

Wouldn't risk driving off without stopping myself anywhere in LOS, not worth it unless you really have something to hide.....

Lived in Samui for 5 years and agree that it's all all a lot more relaxed there. Never been a witness to anyone running but I did see the police had cameras set up a couple of months back pointed in both directions when they were set up for helmet checks. Travel through multiple checkpoints where they are searching for drugs and have never seen a falang get stopped, they just wave me through everytime but stop and thoroughly search every Thai. Plenty turn around as soon as they see the checkpoint and no police have ever chased, they have to see them in the distance but don't care.

There you go...

http://pattayadailynews.com/police-shoot-thai-man-at-checkpoint/

Upon questioning eyewitnesses they revealed that 4 policemen had set up a checkpoint at 22.00 pm but hadn’t installed a sign. Later a Kawasaki Ninja entered the checkpoint but didn’t stop so the police opened fire and hit the rider causing him to crash. Lots of local people complained that the police were out of order and there was no need to shoot the rider. Later the rescue team sent the injured man to Wipawadee Laemchabang hospital.

Damn what's the odds of that happening so soon after I asked to show proof of police shooting at runners.

Good thing I decided not to bother renting a scooter anyway.

I guess the other theory that they would miss didn't hold true either, the guy pulled off a headshot on a moving motorcyclist.

No, they won't shoot you, but can chase you.

But, in between stopping and escaping with full throttle, one can do this:

1. Always look 200 meters ahead

2. Never look at a policemen

3. When you come to the point where they stand, hide behind a car or another driver

4. If you don't have anywhere to "hide" pretend you are looking for something in your pocket, bag, clean visor, looking back, etc.

5. Pass the police in normal speed. If they scream after you stop. If not....,

6. ....stop after 75 meters and look back.

If they ignored you, continue. If they chased you, then you stopped, but with the excuse that you thought you forgot the wallet at home.

OT: I once was waiting for traffic in an intersection. A policeman that was sitting in a taxi-booth in the corner waved me in, asked for my driving license (which I had in the form of a photocopy) so he gave me a ticket and asked if I wanted to pay the ticket now or later. It was 1000B.
I said, I wanted to pay in station. Before I went to the station I asked my landlord what the ticket said. He answered, "It says, you were speeding and didn't stop at policemans request.".

So obviously, it won't really matter if you stop or not stop, they still invent something you did, EVEN more serious stuff than this.

And me - I follow the old and trusted bureau rule: DON'T GET CAUGHT.

Last time I was in Thailand I did just drove right past them unless they stood right in front of me and it was unavoidable. I did this in Chiang rai and Patong. This was in 2007 and again in 2010. So before martial law. I have not driven that much this trip. Only on my girls scooter a few times and never encountered a checkpoint yet. "Knock on wood"

You will generally find there are police 100m's or so either side of the check point. They look out for people u-turning or runners. Thai's are pretty crap at hiding when they are up to no good and panic thats what the police look for.

If you have nothing to hide why not stop because I can pretty much guarantee if you dont stop they will find a reason to cause you problems.

Lets just say you have rentd a scooter. You ride down a one way street that isn't clearly marked. You get a tug. No license, no insurance, no helmet and of course coming downa one way street. Maximum fine 1K baht no more than 2K. Is it worth it?
