fried bugs

Recommended Posts

Love them very tasty but me and girlfriend got sick of them after a while so we stopped getting them. Think I've tried everything that the cart people sell. Favorites are the grasshoppers and the silkworms. Grasshoppers require some work taking off the sharp parts and the head so silkworms are easy to just pop in your mouth.

I first set foot in Thailand in the 1970s, and I never saw fried bugs for sale anywhere except in Issan. (People will eat anything in Issan, including the leaves off the trees.) Of course, nam prik maeng da was around, and that is the only bug I've knowingly ever eaten (excluding sauce made with witchety grubs). But by the 1980s, bug carts were appearing all over Bangkok. They soon arrived in Pattaya too. I've eaten God knows what all in Thailand (including cobra), but I still give the bug man a pass. For one thing, I was warned that the bugs are often caught by spraying them with insecticide!
