Seen a few of the mini-pc laptops from different companies. Biggest drawback is cost/availability of upgrades. The cost of the unit is usually much higher than a "slim" notebook and upgrades are only supported if the model takes off if at all. Better off getting a slim laptop with more options/upgrade slots. If you do go for a mini, make sure it has a docking station option for future upgrade options. Then again, I'm a power buff. If I cant void the warranty pushing the specs, it aint worth owning!

Here is a review on an ASUS 9" model. http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus-eee-p...90.html?tag=txt

1GB RAM, 12GB HD, 1024X600 8.9" LCD, $600

The major issue for me with this laptop, aside from the small screen would be the lack of an optical drive and only 12GB hard drive space. You could add an external, but that defeats the purpose of buying a 'netbook'. 12GB in today's world is TINY. Also the small screen area means you may have to scroll around a lot more to see webpages, etc. as they simply won't fit (1024X600).

If I was going to buy one that small, I'd probably suggest this $820 HP:

Vista Business or XP Pro, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 1280X800 8.9" LCD, and one expansion slot

No matter what, make sure to spec all the goodies you think you'll want, as many of them are tough/expensive to upgrade, if at all.

I've got the 7" linux and a webcam. I brought it to LOS with me last time. The best thing abut this laptop is its size and weight (1KG). It was perfect for the web and chatting with friends back home. The webcam came in very handy as well :-)

good questions, I just looked at my buddies the other day,

he has the latest model but he chose to still go with the smaller screen and

less memory.

Light weight, great mobility, internet, not many bells and whistles but if

it gets stolen while in LOS, not a loss of information and costs.

I plan to buy a friends used one to bring with me to LOS instead of my

labtop w/17inch screen that weights too too much.

That thing would only be good for the bare minimum - email, browse the internet (MAYBE!, if it can handle plugins) and maybe viewing pictures. I can't see the benefit of such a stripped-down portable, myself.

I have the last model of this Sony. 11" widescreen, 1.2kg, and with power saving feature, battery lasts over 10 hours. Take it on every flight and even while watching movies I still get about six hours on the battery. I have a red one and a white one. Small enough to take everywhere, but not so small it's hard to read the screen.

They used to sell a palmtop version with the keyboard split on either side of the screen which was about 7" I think.

Just been having a shop around... I'm after the 4gb one as it has more memory and a webcam (presuming you can run msn on it somehow?) the cheapest i could find it is here.

Haven't decided what colour yet.

more memory?

i think this one has a bit more

That is true... however, i'm saving my cash for lots of ST's in September!

And also I have a full size laptop already so I reckon the 4g will do fine... is that the one you are looking at then? Good price or not?

yea im thinking to get that one, its like 350 euro, so i think the price is fine

have a bigger one to, just a bit to big to travel with, need a small that you just can put in your bag, so im not sure if ill take the 7" or 9 "

I've brought my Asus 4G with 7" screen to LOS. Fits in almost any in-room safe. Works fine for email, internet (Firefox 3 and all FF plugins work fine), media player, slingbox, youtube, etc... Plenty of info on all the Eee PC's here.
