Bring many external hard drives?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have like many of you walked through customs in Thailand without being searched. It's when you return to farangland that customs really pay attention to what is in your bag.

I'll be coming with basically my life belongings this time as this is for my retirement FINALLY!

I have bunch of 2 TBs external hard drives. 6 all together with all the HD and Blue Ray Hollywood movies which I've downloaded. and maybe a few porn

Should I be concerned?

I don't think so.

Other than that. Clothes, family photos and a golf bag and some dust collector from my childhood.

thanx

Only external hard drive I bring is sitting below between my legs 555

Sorry I couldn't resist.  Seriously though, I think if you pack them with your check in luggage and label them all shouldn't be a problem.  Also I wouldn't say anything about having the downloaded movies on them.  Customs in the US coming back from another country is sometimes a pain in the arse.  Happy travels...

I think you will not have a problem going to Thailand, but don't plan to ever bring them back to the US.

Normally I would say that it wouldn't be a problem. However a crackdown on stuff bought outside of Thailand has been announced. If they implement this it will mean more bags being x-rayed. If you have more than one of any particular item it may attract attention. It is illegal to bring porn into Thailand.

Mate,

I was like you and just retired here bringing my digital life with me... Have had no problem in & out of Thailand yet... Though haven't been out since the Junta have come to power... I just pack them in my luggage along with everything else...

Regards, Atlas.

In all my trips to LOS, I've never had my backpack searched, so I can't see that you will have any problems.

..perhaps this: Duty free limits being strictly enforced ?

What I did neglect to say in my last post is that I arrived in Thailand on Friday. For the second time ever (the other time I have a few boxes) I had by bags x-rayed as too did a lot of other people. The normally wide walk space through customs was narrowed.

It has only just started. The linked article is dated yesterday.

Yep

It can happen

I was stopped coming through customs entering Thailand 2 weeks ago

Only the second time in over 90 trips

Go figure

I'd be more concerned about some baggage handler opening my case and stealing the contents. Have it plastic wrapped, or is that a red flag for customs.

when I came over to live on April 1, 2014, I had quite a lot of luggage, and customs didn't go through any of it... I had two external hard drives with me - no copy movies as I figured I'd have all that I need readily available here in Pattaya... but it is a crap shoot... if they want to, they have the authority to stop you and go through all your shit, same in any country... I was VERY concerned about my 4 lifelike silicone repliDolls, complete with pulsating pussy and arseHoles, and fortunately as I said, my luggage wasn't checked... I also was carrying a fine sample of my Japanese Ninja sword and Rambo combat knife collection with me, as well as a slew of endangered specie animals & insects, and a couple metricButteTonnes of elephant tusks and freezeDried bear schlong... thankfully I arrived at my retirement destination with all my shit inTact...

Retired in Pattaya, Thailand - arrived April 1, 2014... Ohhhhh yeahhhhhh... LiveN my dream!

As far as I'm aware Thai customs doing luggage searches are primarily looking for cartons of cigarettes & perhaps over-the-limit booze. If they found any sex toys they'd naturally confiscate those things and keep them for themselves.

I can't see them showing any interest at all in ex HDDs. If they did ask what's on them....highly unlikely...just say it's your work & business files. If you're worried you could even paste on some labels reading something like...."June 2013 business reports"

I've had my bags looked into a couple of times at Don Muang over the past 3 decades and never at Swampy. When they did take a peep a couple times it was very quick look, certainly not the item by item search you'll get in Oz.

Put them in a cloud, forget hard drives, and you will download your movies when you will want/need them.

12 TB probably means *years* of movies ! I bet you will never look at most of them...

I've carried one to-and-fro a few times now, with no probs.

I would suggest wrapping them individually in bubble wrap and keeping them wrapped even when you get to thailand. Drop one on a hard floor and it will not work.

Ohhhh yeahhhh.... I had the C4 cleverly hidden up my sphincter, where the sun never/EVER shines, stored neatly in 143 ribbed (for her pleaZURE) condoms... I had to be very careful when passing my manly, and highly toxic gas on the trip over, as if the gas rushed swiftly enough, it might jar the C4 laden condoms enough to blow me straight to hell... it was a tad uncomfortable, especially on the highly indirect flight, on a US carrier flight, in an economy seat, sandwiched between a  morbidly obese newly wed husband & wife, and in front of me was the center of the Kazakstan national basketball team, who had to recline his seat all the way back just to fit his massive body in the incredibly uncomfortable economy seat... but I made it over OK and now I spend most of my time dancing in one of the infamous BoyzTown clubs...

Retired in Pattaya, Thailand - arrived April 1, 2014... Ohhhhh yeahhhhhh... LiveN my dream!

I did this about 2yrs ago - I had 5 drives in my bag - you have to take them all out etc at the searches - it raised an eyebrow but they did not ask anything - just for security if I was you I would encrypt your porn (at the very least zip it up with a password) and rename it backup04/06/2014 etc etc this way you can say they are backup drives for whatever.

I was thinking about this idea as well. Encypt files as "backup1.bkf", etc (Windows backups are named somefile.bkf). Then if challenged to prove they are a backup file, try to restore, which won't work. This would be plausible. How many horror stories are there about backups assumed to be good, which can't be restored?

Try this in the US and they'll just confiscate your media and spend the next "x" years trying to read it or just store it waiting for scrutiny and good luck getting that back anytime soon. With the proliferation of relatively cheap cloud storage available, why take a chance trying to sneak in contraband on personal media?

After reading this - I was thinking. Can you access pirate bay or similar in thailand? So you can just access movies on demand - so to speak

You can access many torrent sites from Thailand. With one of the proxy dns sites to spoof your originating IP, you can get Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Another option is if you buy a server for 1 month and just upload all the stuff you want to bring over and then download it again - yes this depends on the speeds you get ul / dl at home.
