I am more into Asian food usually when in Pattaya but I would like to try some fare from Central Europe next time around.I would like someone that knows what they are talking about relating to these 3 recommend what they think are the best dishes/best restaurants for someone that knows very little about Central European food.

Try Klein Heidelberg in Naklua or German Garden or Bei Gerhard or Alt Heidelberg or Berliner Eck or Edelweiss or Iss Was (Siam Cats) or Swiss Food

but don't expect it tasting like food in germany or switzerland

Please keep in mind that everything I write is based on my own experiences, my personal preferences and my expectations. YMMV!

There's nothing wrong about being cheap ... but being cheap isn't being smart ... never was, never will be ... it's just cheap

Although the quality of non-Thai restaurants in Pattaya is very good, I don't know if it is the place to go on a culinary adventure .... kind of like Mexican food, you will find a couple Mexican places in Pattaya and some, not all, are pretty good, but is Pattaya the place to go an a Mexican adventure, no. Get my point? The same applies to Central European Food, as you call it.

There are a variety of these places scattered around the place .... but Swiss, mainly around Soi Diamond. German, all along Nuklau Soi and Austrian, not many, but there is one off second road, close to the corner of Soi 8.

German -

Schnitzel

Gulash

Austrian -

Tafelspitz

Swiss -

Roesti

Fondue

Thanks.  I agree with you about it not tasting like it would in those countries. We have AWESOME Mexican restaurants where I live in the US but it's Mexicans making it so there you go.

Both this post and Walter A's are spot on what I was looking for as it provides a base to begin learning about these places and the type of food they serve.Hopefully more Germans,Austrians, and Swiss can post as their opinions are the ones I am most interested from hearing. :Clap9:

This thread has started out good.I think it would be good if individual threads were started by ethnicity(Indian food,Middle Eastern food, etc.) where the primary posters would be PA members of those nationalities.I'm not going to start any more threads as I don't want to seem like I'm cluttering the section up but it may be better than 100 different threads about individual restaurants.

I lived in Central Europe many years and cook Central European dishes all the time, but no, I am not German, Swiss or Austrian.

If you want to hear from ethnic Germans, Swiss or Austrians, maybe you should start a thread in the German speaking forum on PA. There is one.

Although there are a couple Germans and Austrians floating around PA who have a good command of English, most won't , so you are not guaranteed answers. Most Germans speak English or basic English, but would not feel confident enough to write it, and many don't speak or write English at all. I have many German friends in Pattaya, so this is not guess work.

Maybe start a thread in the German forum in both German and English ?

It isn't that important but thanks for the input. What has been posted already will take awhile to read about, anyway.

My favourite is the Austrian restuarant "Domicil".

It's on 2nd road, near the top of Soi 7.

There are probably better ones out in Naklua (German Town).

I just can't be bothered to travel all that way for a meal.

Yeah.I am familiar with all of the ones between Soi 7 and Soi 8 on Second Road.I always seem to never have time when I go by there.

Klein Heidelberg is highly recommendable! I'm German and they serve a great food. They also have a wide selection of well selected imported beers. Worth the try!

As Bier Stüble on Soi 7 is closed for summer holiday (mid-May to mid-September) I decided to give Alt Heidelberg on Beach Road, not far from Walking Street, a try.

When I arrived I was the only customer inside.

The owner was watching German television on a small screen next to the bar.

The interior looks as if it has remained the same for at least thirty years.

The waitress gave me a Russian menu and I had to insist to get a German one.

I ordered a Spargelsuppe (asparagus soup) at 125 baht and a Schweinshaxe at 395 baht.

The soup contained short pieces of very thick white asparagus (perhaps preserved ones) that tasted like straw.

As mentioned in the English translation (“deep-fried pork knuckle”) the Schweinshaxe was indeed deep-fried instead of roasted, which was disgusting.

(I thought the English translation was wrong when I read it.)

In Germany I have eaten several times Schweinshaxe, which was always roasted, not deep-fried.

I have also eaten Eisbein, which is the same part of the pig, but boiled with spices instead of roasted.

I have always been wary of restaurants in Pattaya promoting themselves with signs in Russian.

Those signs seem to scare westerners off and it is very doubtful if they will attract many Russians, if any.

I fear that signs in Russian are part of a strategy of desperate owners who know their quality is too poor to attract western patrons.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last week I have been eating at the German Restaurant Taverne (“Deutsches Restaurant”, “Bürgerliche Küche”) on the corner of Naklua Road and Soi 18/1.
At first sight it looked good and the portions were (too) big, but the quality of the food was very poor.
The business was run by a Thai female, perhaps a widow of a German.
There were several Thai families and a very noisy, cigarette-smoking Russian.
Some prices:

Linsensuppe 135 baht,
Kaßler 230 baht,
Sauerbraten 250 baht,
Heineken 70 baht,

Warsteiner 120 baht,
toilet (for non-customers) 50 baht.
On a lighter note, the bill mentioned “Thank you for coming.”

In Soi Wong Amat, Naklua, there is a good german restaurant. I forgot the name. When you enter the Soi, it's about 100 metres on the right hand side, Just before a bargroup. Reasonable prices too.

The food must be good as the place is packed even during low season.

This should be 'Klein Heidelberg'.

In my opinion the food there has a consistent but not an outstanding quality.

I'm surprised that it was crowded since the main business there were Russian guests.

You'll find many German restaurants close by, that offer a far better value for money.

Last week the German restaurant Bei Anton on Naklua Road opposite Soi 18 was closed.
So, I tried
Bei Gerhard instead on Naklua Road Soi 31 at the left-hand side near the end of the soi.
They happen to have two cheap daily specials.
The soup of the daily special (
Kraftbrühe mit Flädle) was excellent.
The
Sauerbraten came in a very big portion with a lot of Spätzle but, although it was not as bad as the one at Taverne on the corner of Naklua Road and Soi 18/1, it contained too much mustard and did not compare to the Sauerbraten at Bier Stüble on Soi 7.
Also at the defunct Thai-Europe Restaurant on Soi BJ the
Sauerbraten was even better.
There were several farang customers, at least some of them speaking German.
At a long table a farang had apparently invited his extended Thai in-law family.
Some prices:
soup of the daily specials (taken separately) 50 baht,

Flädlesuppe (normal à la carte price) 110 baht,
Sauerbraten 280 baht,
Heineken 80 baht,

Warsteiner 130 baht.

Does Bei Anton still exist?
At their previous location on Naklua Road, opposite Soi 18 is now a Kiss Food.
I thought they had moved nearby, but I couldn’t find them.
