Internet Issue

Recommended Posts

Just bought a new PC and did a clean reinstall of Windows 7, turned off all updates as far as I can see but it is still downloading something that is stopping my PC from accessing the internet. When I restore my PC from a system image when it was working it will work for a day or so then stop.

Any ideas or does anyone know a good computer guy that could take a look?

What error message you getting ?

or

Usually caused by file corruption
Type cmd in search (right click when it appears)
type sfc /scannow in the cmd prompt

Let us know what happens

There are a hundred reasons why System Restore may not be working on your Windows 7 System. Corrupt files, failing hard drive, bad RAM, viruses, malware, and a host of other potential problems. System Restore is a utility provided by the Windows 7 Operating System that affects Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files on your computer. But System Restore is not intended to be "A BACKUP" for your computer system as much as it is intended to be a "GO BACK" feature when things go wrong. It works best when attempting to recover from a bad update, a faulty driver, or corrupted file. Unfortunately, System Restore is HIGHLY UNRELIABLE as a tool for complete restoration.

I'm impressed - who turned it on for you?   :hello09:

Curious why you turned the updates off - do you mean it's pirated software.   :WhoSaw1:

Run a virus and malware scan.

Are you using Firefox? If so, try starting Firefox in safe mode  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Or, use internet explorer, and see if that works.

hold down the ctrl alt delete keys and open task manager, open processes - is there something that is using lots of memory and/or cpu?

If you find the suspicious program- you can open Windows firewall advanced security and block inbound and outbound communication   http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-port-windows-firewall#1TC=windows-7

Turned it off so I could do it manually to see what was being installed. I would never use pirated software. (honest)

I have just had True internet installed and my friend said it might be something to do with that or the modem, only thing is the wi-fi will work with my iphone but the PC internet does not........untill now. Will see how it goes for the next 24 hours.

Sorry not more clear I did a full restore from a windows back up I made when everything was freshly installed and working.

Not getting any error messages the internet just does not work. But I can access the wi-fi from my iphone.

Using firefox, not blocked and no viruses, explorer does not work either. Funny thing is I can download torrents with utorrent and access piratebay loads of times but NO other site will open untill I do a full reinstall from a system image??? I am baffled.

Just bought a new PC and I am lucky if the memory and CPU usage ever goes over 20%

Working now, not going to install or change anything until tomorrow if I have a problem again tomorrow morning then I know it is my internet provider or modem.

If your iPhone is working and your pc not it is by definition not your isp.

You say you put back an image? On a new pc your hardware is not the same so you should not put an image. Always only put back data. Not programs

I put back a new image that I made two days ago with the new install and the new hardware.

Now I am pretty sure it is my ISP, it has just done it again for 20 minutes no sites would open but now it seems to be working for now. Nothing has been changed since my last post.

I am totally baffled, internet goes off on PC but can access wi-fi but the PC will still download torrents and the only site I can seem to access is pirate bay, then suddently it comes back on for a while and works as normal.

Can you hook up to another internet connection? This will obviously tell you if your computer is the problem.

If it turns out to be your operating system then a quick fix would be to install windows vista.

Widows 7 has some connection problems?

"Only the windows 7 systems are suffering this problem, windows vista, Mac os X, iOS, consoles, all connect with no problem to the internet over a wireless network (tried 3 different routers, and bridging Ethernet over a router).

Only windows 7 shows problems.

Speed is limited to around 20 kbps at best when it even connects.

Sometimes rebooting the router fixes it, sometimes disabling the wireless adapter fixes it, sometimes netsh winsock reset in cmd fixes it, sometimes windows "diagnose" (adapter reset) fixes it. Usually not, and it's always different.

Sometimes it just magically fixes it self and starts working again. Sometimes when it is working, putting the computer to sleep causes problems when it's started up again, sometimes not. The power saver options (turn off this device to save power) is disabled.

I also tried 3 different wireless PCI cards (across 2 computers with different motherboards, and different slots).

The only common factor is Windows 7.

Disabled all protocols except IPV4 in wireless adapter properties, no luck. Disabled all other network devices.

Signal strength is fine, no other devices causing interference.

I can usually connect to IRC (somewhat unreliably), even when the connection is terrible, but the quality fluctuates between working (but slow, 3-40 kbps HTTP), terrible connectivity (2kbps, no HTTP, can't reach DNS sometimes) and perfect connection (20 megabits, no problems).

I'm at my wits end.

you sound somewhat technically capable so try this

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/slow-internet-connection-windows-7-pc/5aee9f01-a6e9-41cf-b622-a51d782665e2

the reps response is ok, but also look at the second post down the guy reply to himself about the 10/full and 100/auto option

im honestly inclined to believe its a driver issue

[–]herabek[S] 1 point

I would think so too, but both systems are using completely different wireless drivers (and motherboards). The second system had these issues on a fresh install of windows.

Oh, and duplex mode isn't a variable on my current NIC, but I tried that on the others to no avail.

Out of curiosity, if you open up the network utilization on the windows 7 computer does it show the connection is being saturated (high utilization) or does it look normal under 1% utilization?

Do you run static or DHCP?

[edit] I don't see how it could be a driver issue if you tried so many different NICs. IS there any way to temporary run a Ethernet cable to eliminate wireless interference?

[–]herabek[S] 1 point

On one of the NICs it would limit to 1mbps, the rest (And ethernet) show full 130Mbps connection with around 0-1% usage.

DHCP. Tried static, didn't help. Renewing DHCP leases has never helped either.

Got a 75foot cat6 cable and ran it to the modem/router (unified device from my ISP, I hate it) and it seems to work much better, but I'm still only getting 7 megabits (should be getting 20), and connectivity seems to drop for several seconds every 10-20 minutes.

This only reaffirms that the problem is with windows wireless options somehow, since Ethernet (and every other wifi device) work fine.

I guess my only option is to buy another router and bridge the connection to my PCs over the routers Ethernet.

It really could be drivers - I've force installed ethernet card drivers when I didn't have access to the proper ones, or for a slightly different variant of the same card - and experienced very similar issues.

But for it to be the same thing across 3 different cards, installs both off the accompanying CD, and with drivers found via the venn and dev numbers, I've pretty much exhausted the driver route.

Three different cards as in - manufacturers and drivers themselves? Or three of the same version? But yeah I guess you do have it nicked.

There is nothing unusual in the tcp/ip stack like a left over download manager, adware, firewall or such? (Filters)

Might be related to off-loading...

Have you tried the cards with say, a Ubuntu live CD?

One sure thing that I'm betting will resolve it without digging into deep registry shenanigans would be a clean format, I'd suggest that as a last resort though as you never really learn anything if the answer is always "Format!"

I did start with a fresh install on the second windows 7 system, the issue has been present with both systems from the time I built them.

I've gone through 2 modems, 3 routers, and the issue persists, 3 different wireless cards (EDImax, trendnet, and Asus). Updated, rolled back, and found alternative drivers for all of them.

Disabled all firewalls, virus protection (and switched between a few different ones), and I don't use any download managers.

I have not tried alternate operating systems, though I'm sure that would fix the problem since every other OS I've used to connect to the network has shown no problems.

The issue has to be some incompatibility with my wireless network and windows 7, and since the network works fine for all other devices, it must be something on windows side."

Thats what I will be doing soon, at the moment my internet is almost instantaneous and I am getting downlaod speads of 30mbs from servers outside Thailand.

Spoke to a few friends and they are having some problems too, what I am totally baffled about is why I can access pirate bay most times and download torrents but no other site? But at the moment it will access any site almost instantly.

I'd consider doing a fresh install of Win7 or restore from backup, run all the upgrades that make sense (all security patches make sense), then test your internet access before you install torrent software, etc.

If you are able to download torrent files, obviously you have (some) internet connectivity. It's possible that some other software you've installed is affecting your connectivity.

I have done all that, it has been working for the last few hours even after a restart. I will see how long it works for (not going to install anything else). Fingers crossed.

Stop downloading porn Lee !

haha. I love porn. Thanks for your valuable input almost as helpful as Larry. :GoldenSmile1:

Just put my PC into sleep mode and when it comes out of sleep mode it seems to take a while for the internet to start working. Wondering if it is a modem issue, I am connected using a LAN cable. Running as normal now.

Might be a modem issue if you are using the piece of shit one True gives you. I got rid of that one thanks to Dan and have had zero problems ever since. Now that you told me where Pirate Bay couls be found I am all good downloading now I Fucked blackzilla a classic for sure :-)

You seem to be talking about two different issues, the issue in post 21 is likely to be the power saving setting for your LAN card, go to the properties/ power management for this device and make sure the option for the PC to turn off the device it not enabled.

As to the main issue, start the PC in safe mode with networking, this will eliminate a lot.

Have you tried turning off any anti virus/ security software?

Check to see if you have something installed called "Bonjour", as this has been known to cause this exact problem.

When you did a fresh install, did you use an OEM Windows 7 disc or the image that came with your computer?  Reason I ask if because it sounds like a driver issue for your wireless card/access device, between the sleep/awake power issues and the intermittent connections.  If you went out and bought Windows 7, you're most likely using Window 7's universal drivers. They'll work in most instances, but drivers specifically made for your network card would be better. If you installed a factory image with the network card drivers pre-loaded, it would be worth updating to the most recent drivers, as you very well may have previously downloaded and installed updates to get past wonky performance without realizing it.

Another potential issue would be if your browser got hijacked and some weird proxy was installed that filters your internet traffic. Would be worth checking as well.

Done that thanks. I have also turned off sleep mode and that seems to have solved the problem..................I hope.
