The US are in no position to grant clemency, he's imprisoned in Thailand. They could only intervene politically and I doubt it would be on record.

You are right. I should have said they won't grant their blessing, as in they won't object if the Thai's grant a pardon sometime down the line.

 

As far as being on record if he gets out after ten years on a 25yr sentence... it will be a story that is reported. And at that time questions (might) be asked -- especially if the victims family has anything to say about it.

Would they then  basically take the piss by giving him an easy ride?

Neither the USA nor Thailand would be too happy about that I imagine.

There are no grounds, it can be pretty much a formality. US can't really say anything either. They regularly do the same with their prisoners usually from S American countries and then release them early. I believe the UK can do the same but doesn't. If he is repatriated to UK he will most probably do his sentence in full. The grounds for doing this are that the regimes in S American jails are so harsh that 1 year there is the equivalent of x years in a US jail so they remove that extra from the sentence and release.

 

Interestingly although no one can claim that Thai jails are easy they are mostly not the nightmare hell holes the famous books would have you believe. In fact it is not uncommon for repatriated prisoners to wish they hadn't bothered. In Thailand you spend most of the day outside in the sunshine busy doing stuff and socialising with inmates. Teaching English, sorting food, doing washing whatever. In UK, and Possibly US I don't know, you are locked up for most of the day in your small cell. Your food and clothing is sorted for you. Basically you have nothing to do but time.

some people are saying a tough sentence, his victim does not have a life, let him rot in a thai prison, it's what he deserves.If you can't do the time, don't do the crime
