2 day bar closure this weekend

2 day bar closure this weekend due to Senate Elections and Religious Holiday.

On Tuesday Morning at Pattaya City Hall a seminar for election workers took place in preparation for the first two days of voting for the Senate or Upper House Elections. On 23rd of this month those who reside in Pattaya but are registered in another province will be able to vote in this first phase of voting. Unfortunately, this will mean that bars and other late night entertainment venues will have to close from 6pm on 22nd until Midnight on 23rd. This election also coincides with Maka Bouscha Day on 21st February when bars are expected to close in observance of this religious holiday. The seminar explained to the election workers their individual jobs and how the election day will be organized to ensure they are working in accordance with regulations set by the Election Commission.

Hey

Thanks for the info - they dont believe in giving people much notice do they.

They could organize a piss up in a brewery - saying that - it would probably be shut due to elections bullshit etc.

Off to stock up the fridge!

:D

Won't bother me off to Vietnam on the 14th March 08...

I was in Pattaya in Dec-Jan bars closed for elections, given the amount of corruption and fraud why bother with them and why close bars used by almost !00% foreigners is beyond reasoning, almost all the staff who work the bars can't vote and most if not all bars refuse to serve local males...

I was on the point of making a permanent move to Thailand having visited Vietnam and soon Laos I am now having serious second thoughts, prices are silly in Pattaya there is distinct change in atmosphere and friendliness, places to eat are dearer than UK (this is based on top quality eating places) so OK I am a crap day but closing bars would make it even crappier if I was over there would it not???

I am in Pattaya right now and the bar closings are happening, but you have to understand when they say "close" that means that about 1/2 of them stay open just no music. I am staying on LK Metro and about 1/2 of the bars on this small street stayed open last night. So dont be discouraged that much by it.

Walking Street was really quiet last night, but on the plus side, there were a lot of the go go dancers out looking for some company......no bar fine in other words. The beer bars were open in a random fashion. Some areas they were mostly closed, some were serving just soft drinks and coffee (especially on Walking Street), most that were serving drinks were pouring them into glasses under the counter and putting the glass into a holder on the counter. A lot of the bar complexes on 2nd were in full swing, except no music, but lots of people.

All of the go go's on Walking Street have their lights off, but if you look, some of them ARE open. you just need to hunt a little. by the same token, I saw a number of police (including supervisors) on Walking Street, but very few in other parts of town.

Best bet is to stay away from Walking Street and find the go gos in other areas. Soi 2, Naklua(sp?) all had places open.

In my opinion, this is bad for business, but people are sure to want to make up for it at first opportunity. From another angle, Pattaya is still the same and you can pick up as many girls as you want regardless of the alcohol ban. IMO I get more out of sex sober than drunk, so there you are.

I'm in Patong (Phuket) right now and here is what I have seen. Last night some of the go go bars where closed (not many) and hit and some of the beer bars on one of the Sois where closed. Everything else on the main Walking Street was open for business. The Discos stayed open and everything was business as usual. Christine "soapy" massage parlor was closed in observance of the religious holiday, but is back open again today.

Tonight is another matter. There are ropes blocking off Soi Eric and Soi Sea Dragon. The beer bar girls have the day off and all the stores have signs saying that they will stop serving alcohol at 6:00PM and wont start selling again until Sunday.

So, this should basically put a damper on this evening (I have already bought some beer to hold me over) and things look like they will start up again at midnight tomorrow. Not too much of an issue. If you can't take one night off, you are addicted to more then Pattaya.

I am in BKK right now.

Last night Nana was open but many bars would not serve alcohol on the ground floor. I did find some were serving upstairs. I don't drink so this doesn't affect me as long as the Bar Girls are here ;-)

I did notice that Morning/Night (near Nana plaza) was serving mixed drinks in the tall glasses. I assume it was to make it look like a soft drink. No beer served there.

In general the alcohol ban does not appear to have slowed down BKK, or at least the areas I went to last night. I head back home tomorrow :-( I still have two more on my "to do" list... busy night.

Patpong is immune to almost all alcohol bans. Last night (Friday), other than the fact that beer was served in plastic cups, the place was hopping and it was 100% business as usual. There is every reason to assume that Saturday night will be the same.

Say what you will about Patpong and all its annoying touts, etc., but it is still the cheapest nightlife area in Bangkok (drink-wise), and the only one that never gets closed down on holidays/election days.

Is it a regular thing for bars to close for a few days in Thailand or is it just religious and government holidays ?

Its not that frequent, and usually when it does its from 6pm on a Saturday to midnight on the Sunday, so less than two full days. It happens for government elections, so ( in theory) no ones too pissed to remember to vote for who they want( or who gave them the bribe to vote for them).

Sometimes you get a day of no booze sold for a buddha day, but not that often.

Even then, as other posters have noted, the drinks can usually be found, if somewhat more looking is needed than normal.

For example on one no drinking election time I was told in a favourite bar that beer was off, as its too easy for police to spot. But that I could have some very interesting flavours of coka cola, or orange.

i then quietly told them what short in coke I wanted, and after that just ordered coke.

First time I ever got pissed on a soft drink. :Rules1:

Chill out and enjoy life
