How do you defend yourself?

I've only been in a sticky situation once, and that was in Hollywood at Phuket.

A jealous BF from the previous night turned up very drunk, and saw me dancing very closely with a hot little lady. She came up behind me and grabbed me, then slapped me! I was shocked but luckily thought fast enough to tell my new girl to meet me out the front. The BF then tried to slap me again and was screaming in thai, so i just dodged her slap and made a quick exit into the crowd (it was packed that night) and she was too drunk to find me. I then worked my way back to the entry, grabbed the new lady and made it back to the room in one piece. I was scared the BF might rock up at the hotel, but gladly she didnt!

So in that situation there was really nothing else I could have done!

I have never been in a fight or felt threatened in Thailand. Regardless of what time of the night I am walking back to my hotel. The onle two fights I have seen involved a couple of "English" guys comming out of Shark club and two Americans on soi7 who insisted calling each other "Dog" and although these two must have weighed in at 40stone combined it didn't stop a 5 stone Thai guy running in and chinning one of of them. Which I thought was funny has f*ck!

There are rings and sports venues all over Pattaya and yet the macho man insists on beating the crap out of his best mate in the street. Doh!!

Don't fight the Thai's!

If one is not totally drunk, has a bit of politeness and watches out for the other drunk tourists, I think there will be little problems. I have never had a thai person male or female go off on me. I can't see it happening. I would not find an attempted mugging amusing. But I try to limit my exposure by only carrying an evenings cash and not wearing any jewls, rings or gold. My build and size precludes mugging by all but a dozen bad guys.

This is a very interesting thread. I had no idea about the non-confrontation culture. I guess with Thai boxing being the national sport they will know a thing or two about how to handle themselves.

listen fact of the matter is regardless of where you go its not a good idea to fuck with the locals because they are simply that...local. you are a visitor and they will break your shit just because they are from the neighborhood. i live in brooklyn, ny and it is a rather diverse community but the boys round the way know their own and will break heads if needed. i went to germany one time and had the dumbass idea of fucking about with one of the locals because he laughed at me when the german bouncers did not let me into a club. now i know how to fight pretty well due to years of boxing experience so i lay this guy out no problem. i didnt even have a second to think before all 4 bouncers come rushing at me as well as some of the local lads in line to go to the club. i go down swinging but i go down. fact of the matter is it fucking sucked for ME the next day. sure it must have sucked for that guy as well but nonetheless i was the one who had the shit kicked out of me just because i took offence to something some douchebag said. if you feel like you can break him and get out without anybody trying to avenge the fallen fellow then by all means; but if you have the slightest inkling that the interaction will take longer than a couple of moments, turn around and run.
