mobile phone sim

Hi,

 

im going thailand for a few weeks and want to give out my mobile number to good looking birds so i can call them later and get them to come around or they can call me but dont want to give out uk number as what happens on holiday stays on holiday....

 

is it easy to get a pay as go sim out there?

ok this is all confusing, i want to take my iphone so will be using maybe 50mb a day and am there for 2 weeks only.

 

i want to be able to call back to the uk as well from thailand so which sim do i pick? i will be going bangkok, pattaya, Phuket.

 

i am seeing lots of data tafiffs but not many call and data

Signal issue maybe the biggest bugbear you encounter re 3G which you'll probable need.....

 

The fact that you're only there 2 weeks may mean you're simply better off using an internet cafe......You'll need your iphone unlocked to use a local sim....

 

If thats an issue all the stores sell basic Nokias for around 900 baht which will be unlocked already and pop a local sim in.

 

Dtac have a new package I believe where you can subscribe to a months unlimited data for 399 baht with an allowance for 3g speed and then Edge speeds for rest of month....Buy sim in 7-11 for 49 baht.

 

Of course you'll need your iphone unlocked if you want this option.

 

Horses for courses-I definately would NOT walk around in Pattaya with a contract iphone from Europe.

Take it. There are quite a few sales booths at the airport when you arrive (after immigration/customs) that are quite helpful and all are young and speak good English. Tell what you need and they will have a suitable plan I'm sure.

I used DTAC for Bangkok and Pattaya. From memory I paid B300-B400 for unlimited internet but I barely used it as I was able to connect to free wifi in many places, namely the hotels I stayed at which was all very convenient.

Since you may not be using too much data my advice would be to get a Thai sim for calls/sms (rechargeable at many places like 7/11) and use wifi for your occasional internet browsing. Ideally, book hotels that have free in room wifi. Word of warning, be sure you have data roaming switched off when/if you have your usual UK sim in the phone to avoid huge charges.

think dtac is the one as lots of people are recommending this.....

 

i always have my roaming off now...had a bad experince on my old iphone 3g and learnt a lesson....glad it was only £20 roaming charges and not £2000!!!
