Booking hotels day of

Does anyone know the general availability rate for accomodations around late May? I making my first trip to Thailand then, so honestly don't know how long I should split between BKK and Patts, and I don't want to lay down concrete plans if I don't need to. I'm wondering if just going and winging it would be a bad idea. I'm looking for the cheapest place possible, while still being sanitary.

In late May it is very, very easy to get good, cheap hotel rooms in both BKK and Patts, as it is VERY low season, but still not that much rain after all. I have been there several times in May-June and can only recommend it.
