Difference between these two words for or not?

Hi guys,

 

At the point in my self studies where I've come across หรือ เปล่า which is or not evidently. However, you also have Mai which is or not with the proper tone...

 

Whats the difference here in terms of usage? Is this like tahn and gin in terms of formal and unformal?

หรือเปล่า I think of as 'or not' - คุณจะไปหรือเปล่า - are you going (or not)?

ไหม - is like a ?

 

 

I've never really thought about it when using it, i guess it's subconscious, but I suppose when I expect the answer to be a simple yes or no i'll use หรือเปล่า and ไหม for when I expect a little more elaboration in the response.

I've never really thought about it before either, but I've always replied to these questions in the same manner as they were asked. If a Thai asks me something with "plao" ending I'll repond with an affirmative or plao. Likewise "mai" I'll repond with something affirmative or mai + subject verb.

Yep, me too. I realize I play "by ear" most of the time, which sounds better in the context is ok. Usually, it's หรือเปล่า when I expect a quick yes/no precise answer to a precise question, ไหม when I expect a more general or elaborate answer. I ask "sabai dee reuu bplaao" สบายดีหรือเปล่า when I want to know e.g. if someone that's not been feeling well recently now feels ok or not, สบายดีไหม if I want to ask "are you feeling good?" in general. I ask "อยากไปไหม" (yaak bpai mai) if I want to know if in general (in the future) you like the idea of going, "อยากไปหรือเปล่า " (yaak bpai reuu bplaao) if e.g. we have to decide now if we go or not.
