Thai Airways to acquire 37 new planes

Thai Airways has announced plans to acquire 37 new aircraft over the next six years at a cost of 118.6bn baht ($3.9bn; £2.4bn).

The airline will buy six Boeing and nine Airbus planes, at a cost of almost 50bn baht, and lease a further 22.

It said the overall cost of the planes was equal to 40% of the company's total assets.

The planes would be used on intercontinental, regional and short-haul flights, the airline said.

"[The new planes] will permit the company to be in the top three leading airlines in Asia and top five leading airlines in the world, both in terms of quality and services efficiency," Thai Airways said.

The airline will take delivery of six Boeing B777-300ER planes in 2014-15, four Airbus A350-900 planes in 2016-17 and five A320-200 in 2014-15.

Really good news. Thai has always been one of my preferred carrier and with a new fleet they will defo be my first choice. They further plan to sell the oldest 747 and upgrade the newer with complete new interior, chairs and entertainment system. Didn't they plan to buy some A380 as well?

That's really overdue. Flying with Thai Airways on one of their Boing 747 felt like a time-warp that sets one back some 15-20 years.

I flew with Thai last year in an old 747, even the business class seat in the top deck was dated and old. Basic entertainment system. Thai do use modern 777's ex Brisbane and they will certainly close the gap to their rivals once they update their fleet.

I flew with Thai air for the first time last month, nothing but good things to say about them, direct flight brisbane to Bangkok for $1000 return

Will always fly with Thai from now on unless another airline has a huge sale.

Thai Air is the most expensive of the airlines, and this will probably just cause it to raise their prices.

Not for me! It is the second cheapest after Sri Lankan by $20 and the only non-stop. I hope they add another flight and give me a new A-320 with better video. Can't wait!!!

Gmoule is right, the Flight Attendants are stunning and super nice.
