Get the tones wrong and you'll be buying a kennel for your horse and a saddle for your dog. Thais are not very forgiving with our mispronunciations, we would naturally understand the simple error, they, on the whole, would not.

Great that you took the trouble to post anyway and I meant no offence. :Chokdee3:

The transliterations mean nothing without knowing the tones.

I know OP will take offence, but have to agree. It's alright cutting and pasting content, but the Thai language is dependent on tone and you will get a lot of blank looks if you parrot some of these phrases. The transliteration is not overly helpful - i.e. kuhn (you) is pronounced koon but you would be tempted to say kun (same as pun) if you followed blindly. Instruction that chun is for females and pom is for males would also avoid some embarrassment.

funguy + Slacker,,,,how about you both make some videos, how to pronounce the tones, then upload to youtube and link them to this thread ?? Try to help make the thread better! no offense :P

(Pom) ja pai = I will go

(Pom) yaak pai = I want to go => dee tee soot :D

Well, transliteration and tones aside, thanks for those phrases!

I already know most of them in Thai, so luckily I don’t have to worry about transliteration and tones :D

I am however trying to learn some Khmer Surin with the help of this girl I know.

Unfortunately there isn’t much learning material to be found, so I’ve been making up my own list. I already have some of the basics down, but your list reminded me of some things that I’m going to have to ask her next time I see her.

Here's a tip: if you ask someone in English if they speak English they will either look confused because they don't or will reply in English that they do.

It is amusing to see how to ask in Thai, something you could just ask them in the language you are asking about.

I think the OP has done well here. Yes there are the various little problems - tones etc but he's put a lot of effort into this, so well done.

Tones are sooooo important though. I was trying to show off to my lady after just 2 or 3 Thai lessons and wanted to say On August first, I will be coming to Thailand... The word for come is maa with mid tone word for dog is maa with rising tone. I felt hurt that she started pissing herself with laughter till I realised I'd used the wrong tone.

Also the problem with transliteration is certain things are not easy to write in latin script, eg final consonants. Baht is pronounced without the final t but it is not bah more like bah(t). My teacher describes it as say the letter but don't let the sound out.

What would be really nice would be for someone to record the phrases one by one and link them in to each one. But then there are iPhone apps that do that.

Back to the point I made at the beginning. Well done OP a lot of work done there and appreciated

But...what do I know?

not always, maybe you want to use the phrase or word with someone else , not always the person you ask.

I had to ask my girl howto say in Thai 'No thank you" to refuse the hawkers while I'm trying to enjoy a quiet drink.

I use "Fuck off you cunt" but suspect it needs to be more tonal

I used to try to speak Thai my 1st 5 or 6 trips. But I was told I'd be better off just speaking English. I find he was right, at least for someone like me that only goes once a year. I still remember the look on a vendors face,

the 1st time I said your welcome instead of kop cum krup to him. It was also the 1st time he didn't laugh after

I probably mispronounced it.

Get the tones wrong and you can be saying all manner of disgusting things: Talk to a younger girl (nong) get that one wrong and you calling her pus or discharge. Get banana (kway) wrong and you talking about your dick. The wrong tone for understand or know (rue) turns it into hole. Got to careful with those tones mate.

It's great that the Thai spelling has been included for many of the phrases. If you learn to read Thai, you can get the tones right just from the spelling. Transliteration is a terrible thing (although better than nothing, I suppose). It's too bad that there are so many different systems of transliteration - very confusing. But it would help a lot if indications of the correct tone were included in the transliterated text (with marks over each syllable to indicate the tone).

Even so, despite the limitations, thanks for posting the list. Just be careful when using it if you don't know the correct tone.
