High Waves batter the coast of Pattaya.10 Fishing Boats destroyed.

2 meter high waves battered the coast of Pattaya in the early hours of Thursday with some local fisherman believing it may be connected to the Japanese Earthquake and resulting Tsunami. The worst hit area was in Naklua where local fisherman battled the waves for 3 hours as they struggled to save their fishing boats. The high waves and winds lasted for approximately 3 hours and it was reported that 10 fishing boats were sunk and a number of coastal properties were damaged. We were told that these conditions had not been seen in Naklua Bay area for many years and some feared it was a result of the Japanese Earthquake. This would be unlikely due to the geographical and geological location of Pattaya in relation to Japan but it is clear the terrible events in Japan have struck fear to people around the world. Later on Thursday, Khun Wootisuk, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya visited the affected area in Naklua and offered private donations direct from Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Itipon to those affected by the high waves. 20,000 Baht was given to Khun Meun aged 81 who lost his entire house to the water only hours before. Donations of 3,000 Baht were given to other local fisherman who lost their boats. Further donations are due from City Hall in the coming days.

I noticed that the waves were unusually high that night. It has been followed by unusually cool temperatures.

Tides are caused by the moon (more specifically by its gravity pulling at the water). The moon will be at its perigee this weekend (nearest approach to earth). This particular perigee is the closest in twenty years. That might have had some influence on the waves as well.
