I don't know how it is in Australia but I got my Iphone 4 'free', locked to a contract here in the UK. Unlike in the past though they were quite happy to officially unlock it for me via Apple for £15 so I can now use it with any network. This might be cheaper than buying depending on your use in Australia and if your network would be willing to unlock it for you for a reasonable fee?

As long as you get a genuine one. I have an iPhone 4 in Australia but decided to get another one (Copy) whilst there late last year as the dual Sim Card appealed to me and only 3000baht. Lasted one week before it went out of calibration and then the menu could not be accessed to correct it. Took it back 3 weeks ago. They said they would fix it but after 4 days when I went to pick it up it still played up. They grudgingly offered me a replacement or to buy it back for 400baht. Haven't even turned the new one on yet and will wait till Saturday and I arrive back there so if it plays up I will be straight back around to the shop.

Mate I am an IT consultant and have purchase iPhone's here & shipped them to ex Pats in Thailand. A legit factory unlocked iPhone here is Aust is a reasonable price though now the $ is higher maybe not so much. In Thailand I would be concerned that it was hot, fake or something else. Sometimes trying to save money is expensive......

That is a good strategy -- buy the prior generation shortly after the new generation is announced.

 

You will LOVE the iPhone 4; the modern smartphones (Apple or Android) are truly awesome devices.

I purchased my iphone 4 16gb unlocked for $850 in Sydney. Based on Thai prices quoted here that would be anywhere between$725 and $775. So yes it would be a saving.

 

But I needed the phone then (because my iphone 3gs had died) and I didn't want to enter in to a contract as I"m not a big phone user.

 

The good thing though I have a pocket wifi device that only ends up costing me $20 per month and use it for both my iphone and my laptop. So I'm happy with the deal I got in Sydney

Yeah i've had my TGF recently get me a price in BKK & its pretty much no difference with the price here in Melbourne....Tuckom the same. I might have to wait until the iphone 5 comes out then purchase the then cheaper iphone 4.....thxs for your input
