Hi Guys

Just looking forward to my debut visit to LOS. I am a heavy user of my HTC smart phone not just for a phone but in general as a life organiser, mp3 player, navigation tool and essentially a pocket pc in which i store important bits of info and access to emails/social networking.

Just wondering if anyone has any info on which prepaid mobile phone network provider might be the best so that i don't have to resort to using my roaming on the phone and incurring ridiculous data charges. Does LOS have pretty decent/cheap data options available for smartphone users?

Also, have any of you found google maps useful when on the ground in Pattaya? i figure using google maps might just be a tad bit easier then resorting to printing out PDFs of Soi layouts etc

I am mindful that carrying round an expensive phone might make me a target to pick pocketers etc, however i think i can manage this one ok if i keep the phone discreetly hidden on my persons when i'm having a stroll.

any idea of the costs involved would be great, i know i will be on holiday but i would love to still be able to be contacted and have an online presence, i figure a smartphone would be ideal should i need to make any day trips to islands etc and not have to rely on my laptop or having to be at a hotel with wifi access

Cheers

Hiya, well i use 1 2 call and theres an option for 20 hrs internet for 100 bht. i use it on my phone all the time..and hardly ever run out. im upgrading to HTC next week and will be taking it to LOS so will see how cost effective it is and let you know. Ive used google maps for my long 7 hr drive up north and it works fine.

I think that on my True SIM card I can get data for 29B/day, and much less monthly. They sent me an SMS about it a couple of weeks ago. Dont ask me how though as I get all I need from wifi and so have never followed it up. Try the True website.

I recall from another thread that a BM got disoriented after getting of a baht bus and was grateful that he had google maps on his phone as it got him back to his hotel no problem and saved him from hours of aimlessly wandering the streets of Pattaya.

i am paying 999 baht per month for unlimited data including tethering.

if you have a 850 mhz phone you can get 3G in Pattaya from TRUE.

Great info. If you buy a phone on a plan and it is locked. Is it easy to get it unlocked in pattaya?

most cell phone places in Pattaya will unlock your phone..for a price of course.

Keep in mind you can use MASSIVE amounts of data in a short period of time. If you decide to use your home SIM, make sure you are fully aware of what you are getting into.
